it's just so weird that almost no big channels are giving this wash range proper reviews when just about everyone agrees that their regular paints are top tier. I'm certainly glad that you guys took the time to check them out!
Great video. The medium is supposed to be a mix of 1 part normal paint (assuming pro acryl) to 4 parts medium to create a glaze and 1 part paint to 4 parts medium to 4 parts water to create a wash. Would be good at some point if you did a compare against the pre-done wash vs the above.
My guess for the old GW colour is ... Blue! I recently bought 10 pro-acryl paints, and decided to base all my painting on them for a while. I was done for a bit after fighting GW's awful pots and inconsistent paints, plus a real but frustrating go at making oils work (pro tip, they don't!). Pro-acryl is a revelation, they're amazing!
I would like to see an in-depth guide to washes. After seeing this going on so smoothly, I think I have to give washes another try. Seems I've been doing it incorrect (maybe that's also the reason for me struggling with contrast paint?).
You've put this perfectly, consider it a priority for us. I think you're right, and a lot of other people are in exactly the same position (without knowing it)
Bloomin nice one! I bought the pro acryl base set recently and have been absolutely loving them! Good to know that their skills at formulating paints has extended to their washes.
That black wash looks great for panel lining. I'd love to see a side by side of some off black paints from different ranges that would work well with a panel line or contrast wash. I feel like that's something I'm always looking for to do a good fast clean black, and unfortunately Nuln Oil Gloss has gone away. My go to for a long time was Secret Weapon soft body black over the Flames of War German Grey spray, but I've finally used up that old pot.

i've been using PA black wash for past few months, and let me tell you, it was amazing. My previous experience was limited to Vallejo Game Color washes (wich all suck, but black was somehow usable) so it's not like I have comaprison to army painter, games workshop or other brands, but PAbw simply has amazing finnish and has no problems of Vallejo washes. Getting it was one of best ideas i ever got.
I was one of the first consumers to get this set, I won it on Monument's Twitch stream when they were giving them away... right before the line launched... I've used them quite a lot, I'd say the flesh is probably my favorite, with the black close behind. They're much thicker than the GW washes, and I like that they dry matte. Thanks for sharing this in depth dive into the washes though, very useful!
The flesh wash is part of my ultimate flesh recipe. It is so subtle against their different flesh colors, that it allows for a LOT of variation by doing it in multiple layers, adding in a touch of magenta, and then mixing it with layers going up. The properties of the wash work perfectly, and you can choose how intense you use it just by doing multiple layers - which means it you can get it exactly where you want over and over which is exactly what I need a flesh color to do.
Just started using these for my death guard and i really like them! I use a 50/50 mix of the black and brown wash for the Steel. Gives it a nice weathered look
If you want other Pro Acryl wash colours then use their transparent paints with the medium, you can use regular paints too but the transparent ones work especially well.
That Flesh Wash makes that yellow so warm and pleasant! I've been using Pro Acryl exclusively for a year and a half now, and this is the first I've heard of the washes (guess I've been out of the loop, hehe). I'm gonna have to snag these. They look amazing!
I’ve got these as well as a few other pro acryl paints arriving soon, extra hyped now. Watching you apply them they almost look like thinned contrast paints ..
I agree the black has been the best out of the three and after GW changed Nuln oil, it’s properties really only take affect in the recesses and no longer leaves a filter like it used to with a regular brush. Pro Acryl seems to leave more of a filter over flat surfaces and using their proprietary mixing medium you can play around with different consistencies until you find a mix that works for you. The directions which are not on the bottle or at least they’ve been updated for using the medium is for glazing he suggests for parts medium to one part paint and if you want to turn it into a wash you do for parts, medium one part paint, and then simply asked for parts water. And I’ve heard you can use this with their transparent paints to achieve somewhat of a contrast. Paint sense you’ve got the translucency, and now you’ve changed the viscosity so that it has the four parts medium to act as a glaze in the four parts water to act as a wash, which is kind of what contrast paints do. These directions, or given for their pants I haven’t tried adding it to their washes. Flash wash is good and it’s more of a reddish brown little on the stronger side but the brown is my least favorite because it just doesn’t seem to do much. I was hoping for something like an Agrax earthshade, but instead, he acts more like GW’s new Nuln Oil, except it’s Brown.
@@ArtisOpus Please do. They're criminally underused and people would be blown away when they realize how much more control oil washes give you and how easy and fast you can have amazing results with them. Might wanna release a cheap-ish synthetic brush range to go with it when you're ready ;-) I'd buy it! Still, these washes here look pretty great. If you're going with acrylics, the Pro Acryl washes seem to be top tier material.
The fact that the obsession with slightly differently formulated paints (which consist of pigment/medium/flow improver/etc) and yet noone goes out and makes them from scratch to their liking and instead are tied to brands and their "formulation" is one of the more annoying aspects of miniature painting.
@@joel6376 Well, switching to oils did basically just that for me. There are hardly any oil washes on the market (which absolutely blows my mind), so I basically had to make all of them myself. Especially when AK Interactive secretly changed the recipe for Streaking Grime - and then lied about it, that's when I got fed up with their BS and started mixing my own. Sounds like a chore at first, but it's not difficult at all and once you get the hang of it, you get the EXACT color type that you want, even perfect oil wash versions of GW's acrylic washes. Oil washes are simply superior to anything else currently on the market in terms of cost, ease of use and control. It simply blows my mind seeing people pay premium prices for acrylic washes that even in their finest hour don't even hold a candle to anything oil based.
Dear Artis Opus I would very much like to see a drybrushing video of Ultramarines. Yes, I know that that ultramarines have been done 1000 times before in all kinds of different styles but I have to honest that I really, really like your drybrushing style with the other chapters! I'm quite new to the hobby and currently not interested in jumping into the whole airbrushing thing yet (due to up-front costs), hence why I like your dry brushing since it achieves almost the same blending and highlighting. Since I'm new I have a hard time transferring the concepts (and paints) from your other chapter videos and a dedicated ultramarines video would thus be a really great help! Thanks for all the great content! PS, it would be great to see a video on the blending your do with drybrushing. The few I've tried and up with "hard" transitions between colours.
Thanks for this. I haven't been able find a black wash I like as much as the original Citadel one, this looks perfect. I do miss the old chestnut wash too, it had such a rich warm tone that was great for wood and leather. I am getting back into painting after years away and on a tight budget, so Army Painter have been good basis for my collection but Pro Arcyl are going to be creeping in. Their Titanium White is so fluid, yet covers so well. Your channel has made a massive difference to my dry brushing technique too, so thank you for that too.
Hi Byron, you mention that they work well through an airbrush and was just wondering if you could shed a bit of light on how you apply the washes with an airbrush to achieve similar results as you do in this video?
So a suggestion for Pin Washing and panel lining, even works for free hand if you use a thicker paint, but I like a fountain pen with washes thinned in medium to making sure my darkest color is as neat and tidy as I can make it...I like this bacuse you can do that kind of lining after the rest of the model is done and varnished incase you make a mistake or want to change the whole tone of the model with shadow lining colors, the varnish will also help the capillary right at the edges of those panel lines. Things you learn from other hobbies like Gunpla, I have noticed that set of hobbyist tend to take model prep and finishing stages to a level that Table Gamers would get a case of brain spaghetti to imagine doing to a whole army...but most of them don't paint except for panel lining and color correction...which they are by far more most amazing group at those techniques, especially considering the very bold and unforgiving colors their models are in...here have a pile of plastic that 4 distinct colors of White with flashes of some of the most saturated and vibrant colors we can think of...now go make your model kit look cool and not like a power ranger toy.
Big Pro Acryl fan, but I recently went to oil washes for almost everything, and not only is it cheaper, but it works better. Still might snag the black one when I buy from them again tho.
Pro Acryl are really top tier. Those washes work great through your airbrush for glazing too. I've moved away from using acrylics for washes (especially pin-washes) over the past year or so and started using enamel washes. I've always used oil washes for weathering effects, but enamel washes over the top of acrylic can give you a ridiculous amount of control. They're really easy to make from scratch too.
@Andy I use Abteilung 502 from AK Interactive, but I also use some Windsor&Newton oils, purples to be precise. The difference between them is minimal, especially when you use them to make washes. Abteilung 502 is said to dry faster when used as oil paints, but I haven‘t noticed a big difference to be honest. They both take ages to dry, which is both good and bad. You also need mineral spirits, since you can‘t mix oil colors with water. Be careful with mineral spirits, use gloves and make sure the room you paint in is well ventilated. Mineral Spirits has quite a pungent smell and might give you headaches over time, so wear one of those fancy sprayer masks. Also make sure to use cheap synthetic brushes, otherwise the mineral spirits will ruin any decent natural brushes like Artis Opus brushes. If you need tutorials I highly recommend Grimdark Compendium‘s content. He basically introduced me to this and fundamentally changed the way I paint miniatures. Biggest game changer in my 28 years of hobby! Seriously, I owe him! P.S. Don‘t lick any brushes you used with mineral spirits, like never ever!
I have them, they're alright. three washes isn't much of a range. The black wash isn't a replacement for nuln oil, and the brown wash is too similar to the black wash, but the flesh wash is probably the best of the bunch, with any offwhite/yellowish flesh colored paint, to use the flesh wash with and then come back and redo the raised bits with the original paint.
The Brown wash appears to naturally want to work properly on rounded gems and lenses, it really wants to make a nice pool on a lower corner to work with...interesting, it being slightly thicker than black I think I might have found my new glazing base for Gems and Lenses...thanks again!!!
Bah, Enchanted Blue was my guess too. Everything I painted back in those days was red over black undercoats (which looked as grim as you'd expect), I barely had any use for the blue colours!
The black wash has definitely been my go-to for a grip now. Nuln Oil is dead! The brown wash left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Agrax Earthshade is still my fave
Been loving pro acryls paints, still waiting for some restock here in Sweden for the washes. Great video. Where did you find that little stainless mixing bowl?! Been looking for something like that? Or if anyone here knows if they have a name?
So the medium can be used to create washes with similar properties from pretty much any colour? Additonally, do you have a video on mediums in general?
The Kabalite green is very similar to their dark Jade, which is a fantastic color. Regarding that paint, that’s no longer in GW‘s paint line m, how are you referring to Devlan mud or was it Badab black? I never got a chance to use them, but I hear about them a lot
The brown wash feels like the odd one out. It looks either like a panel liner made for a very specific use, like you can see in the AK range, or as something that should be in a wave 2 of wash releases and not in the first wave where it would be more logical to have the essentials. Maybe it's just made for more capable painters than me but very very rarely I find myself wishing for a brown grey wash. Or maybe it just looks a bit different on screen vs how it looks IRL. But the flesh wash looks pretty nice, looks fairly similar to the Vallejo Game Color flesh wash though and that one is cheaper. It also seems like these washes demand a bit more skill then the average GW, Vallejo, and Army Painter washes.
do the regular pro acryl paints require proper medium? cos sometimes they come out quite heavy haha, I've used water but even still.. has a shine I would say...
I just got me a set of the washes. Can’t wait to get them. Btw, where did you get those little metal dishes you have the paint in or what are they called?
@@ArtisOpus first I tried to do a 50/50 mix of water and wash. It went over ivory acrylic with a mix of crusaders skin from speedpaint 2.0. As it dried in the recesses it left small thin lines in the recesses as it dried and didn't really leave much of a line where it pooled. I tried this with the flesh wash as well as the black wash as they both did it. I also tried using it less thinned down, I don't remember the exact ratio but it did the same thing. I am new to painting so I was just teasing different stuff and not sure why I got this result. Did I let it pool too much? Or add too much water.
They don't have one singular use, you could use them to darken or shade areas, blackline between details, glaze, lots of stuff! The black is quite soft, so it really opens things up (especially adding other stuff to it, and using it's wonderful properties).
This is a fantastic review - and I'll be looking to grab a few Proacryl supplies over the next few months. One thing I'd love to see Byron tackle is painting Deathwing/Bone coloured power armour using drybrushing.
May I ask if your Glaze and Wash Medium smells a little strange, maybe a bit stale for want of the correct english word as well or did I just receive a bad bottle? While layering and glazing I had some trouble with it, too, unfortunately. The colours dried a bit patchy
They do a set of pro-acryl washes, and they're all pretty good. I'm surprised more channels don't mention pro-acryl as their paints are really well pigmented, and their metallics have impressive covering power. Their dark silver can cover anything, even if you water it down :)
@@ArtisOpus Don't tell anyone, but I still have Several of the 6 Pack Boxes of Citadel Color back from 2nd Edition 40K time frame. Mostly washes left at this point, the Lightning Bolt Blue didn't make it but I think I still have like 15 bottles of the original Lich Purple
looks good but ill be honest tough, why not just oil oils for washes? it looks better, you have a much longer working time - you cant really screw it up once you know the basics, price is about the same. i dont understand why oils are not the standard for washes, it is easier than acrylic washes - the only downside is that they are toxic so just dont lick your brush
A lot of people prefer to use acrylics, especially if you're doing small processes, and not bulk-army batching. I don't think the chemical concerns some have are warranted, but I do get wanting to just use the same water and stuff you use with your acrylic paints. Oils are incredible, enamels, all that stuff! Keep your eyes peeled for some making an appearance soon :)
In all honesty, you guys really need a brush maintenance video or series of videos on how to care for your brushes. As expensive as they are people should really have a quick resource to check on how to care for them. Another is what paints are best for your drybrushing techniques as not all paints are created equal in terms of how they drybrush.
Hey buddy, we have one, it's been viewed quite a lot! We're planning a specific series D one very soon though, if that's what you meant. Second suggestion is A1, there's a reason both of these videos haven't come yet, but you're completely spot on with them, thanks!
I think it's really insulting that companies producing and selling their paints leave it to the customer to "try them out and experiment". THEY should be the ones doing full blown tutorials and offering better instructions on how their paints and mediums, ect all work and mix, ect. If they can't take their own business with that level of seriousness, respect and dedication why should I???
I've used both the Black and Flesh wash, and while the Flesh wash is respectful, I really have to ask WTF about the black wash. It sucked. Drying way to quickly.
I didn't read all the comments about what the discontinued color may/may not have been.. So I'll just throw out this guess.. Teclis Blue Ok, that's my call.. let me know.. I don't even know if they still make/sell Teclis Blue, but I do know it's a marvelous shade of Magical/Fantastical Proportions..!! Cheers👍💎👍
I'm a huge fan of their paints and was super excited to try the washes but but to be honest they were disappointing bordering on actually being bad. All three came out fairly glossy for me and stained the surfaces / coffee stained more than other washes. Basically everything I don't want from a wash

The black wash isn't a replacement for nuln oil, and the brown wash is too similar to the black wash, but the flesh wash is probably the best of the bunch, with any offwhite/yellowish flesh colored paint, to use the flesh wash with and then come back and redo the raised bits with the original paint.
Super-interesting to see this, essentially the exact opposite of my order of preference!
Can just make your own washes of any colour using their wash and glaze medium (and water)
@@Prickles2001 Sure, but then why would I be bothering when I can get some golden wash and golden colors and just make my own ?
The Brown wash appears to naturally want to work properly on rounded gems and lenses, it really wants to make a nice pool on a lower corner to work with...interesting, it being slightly thicker than black I think I might have found my new glazing base for Gems and Lenses...thanks again!!!
Really cool. Thank you for sharing.
Our pleasure, dude!
Is the old school blue colour on the space marine back pack Enchanted Blue?
Not quite, I think it does look like it, though. It's the beloved Hawk Turquoise :)
Bah, Enchanted Blue was my guess too. Everything I painted back in those days was red over black undercoats (which looked as grim as you'd expect), I barely had any use for the blue colours!
I actually watch all your videos in full length without skipping or speeding up 2X. I mean that alone says a lot haha.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Is it Altdorf Blue? The yellow with flesh wash looks incredible!
Right? One of my fav combos :) A bit of a purple in there and you'd really have something interesting!
It's Hawk Turquoise!
Just got my order in from you, they really are cracking, very like the original old school nuln oil.
Glad you're liking them! any unexpected uses for the others?
Enchanted blue
The black wash has definitely been my go-to for a grip now. Nuln Oil is dead! The brown wash left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Agrax Earthshade is still my fave
Been loving pro acryls paints, still waiting for some restock here in Sweden for the washes.
Great video.
Where did you find that little stainless mixing bowl?!
Been looking for something like that? Or if anyone here knows if they have a name?
Good alt for oil washes
Can i just confirm are you applying them over a varnish? I tried this and they stain quite bad
Was the beginning filmed in the National Museum of Scotland?
So the medium can be used to create washes with similar properties from pretty much any colour? Additonally, do you have a video on mediums in general?
Yeah absolutely dude, but they might be a bit slimy if it's just a dot of strong paint and the medium.
I don't, but it's not a bad idea!
@@ArtisOpusAwesome, grabbed some of that and the black wash! Mediums seem simple enough but i'm sure you have some tricks to share
I don't need to watch the video, lightning bolt in the thumbnail confirms this is fact!
It’s just that it’s blue-shifted. Perfectly useable but if you’ve only used conventional red-browns it’s going to do things you aren’t expecting.
do the regular pro acryl paints require proper medium? cos sometimes they come out quite heavy haha, I've used water but even still.. has a shine I would say...
I just got me a set of the washes. Can’t wait to get them.
Btw, where did you get those little metal dishes you have the paint in or what are they called?
Struggling getting good results with this wash and I dont know what I'm doing wrong. I keep getting coffee stains near the recesses. Please advise.
More info on your process please bud, what did you do, what's it going over, is it diluted, etc
Still got some of the old Citadel Armour Wash - second to none for accurate panel lining....
So what was the old GW blue? I know I had a pot of that years ago but I can't remember the name to save my life. What was it?
Nice satin finish.
How does the ProAcryl glaze medium work with other paints? Would it work well with Vallejo paints? Or is it specific to the ProAcryl range?
7:30 - nIIice
;)
Are black washes meant to add more of a detail? Or giving it that “battle damged” look?
They don't have one singular use, you could use them to darken or shade areas, blackline between details, glaze, lots of stuff! The black is quite soft, so it really opens things up (especially adding other stuff to it, and using it's wonderful properties).
This is a fantastic review - and I'll be looking to grab a few Proacryl supplies over the next few months.
One thing I'd love to see Byron tackle is painting Deathwing/Bone coloured power armour using drybrushing.
Try using the flash wash over gold or bronze?
Were you in the national museum of Scotland there?
Absolutely yes, and loved it!
@@ArtisOpus I am glad, hope you had a fantastic wee trip to Edinburgh
I thought that's where it was!
May I ask if your Glaze and Wash Medium smells a little strange, maybe a bit stale for want of the correct english word as well or did I just receive a bad bottle?
While layering and glazing I had some trouble with it, too, unfortunately. The colours dried a bit patchy
How does the wash interact with Pro-Acryl paints? I often find that their paint soaks up a wash.
That's hawk turquoise 👀
YESSIR!! And my did it go well with the flesh wash :)
@@ArtisOpus I loved that colour to bits!
sooooo whats that mystery blue???????
Timestamp? :)
What if I use resin models???
Enchanted blue ?
Close! Hawk Turquoise
Really curious about the airbrush comment, as hadn't really considered that before! Assuming you're doing it as a thin coat?
Feathering these should work nicely for OSL effects.
holla fella i have no idea where you get pro acryle in the uk any chance you can point me in the right direction?
Element Games!
Artist opus PA Signature series when? 🤔🤔🤔
enchanted blue or was it, like swooping hawk blue?
Hawk turquoise! :)
@@ArtisOpus haha see I was on the right path! i still have some of those old paint laying around...and the foundation paints oof
Oh and flesh wash on a slapchop pauldron? Nice.
Whenever I see them doing a demo of the brown wash it always over something that’s already brown…
Enchanted Blue??
Is that Sue in Chicago?
They do a set of pro-acryl washes, and they're all pretty good. I'm surprised more channels don't mention pro-acryl as their paints are really well pigmented, and their metallics have impressive covering power. Their dark silver can cover anything, even if you water it down :)
Lightning Bolt Blue?
:D
@@ArtisOpus Don't tell anyone, but I still have Several of the 6 Pack Boxes of Citadel Color back from 2nd Edition 40K time frame. Mostly washes left at this point, the Lightning Bolt Blue didn't make it but I think I still have like 15 bottles of the original Lich Purple
Your example of "what not to do" thats why medium is better than water. You get no to minimal 'peel' effect with the medium.
Yup! But diluted with water does have it's positive traits
looks like lightning bolt blue
Close, Hawk Turquoise! It's a little different over black
Dude are you in the Edinburgh museum?
Chainmail wash?
If you can't do Picaso like paintings on miniatures with Army Painter paint, then don't buy more expensive paints work with what you got.
looks good but ill be honest tough, why not just oil oils for washes? it looks better, you have a much longer working time - you cant really screw it up once you know the basics, price is about the same. i dont understand why oils are not the standard for washes, it is easier than acrylic washes - the only downside is that they are toxic so just dont lick your brush
Please use the white background, as the colours on your mat are a little confusing for me with doggy eyes, sorry not a complaint just a thought?
I bet those are backpacks...
Not a fan of pro acryl paint(personally dislike the feel and coverage), but these look fantastic!
Selling for $22 when the pro acrylic website sells them all for around $15....
@@ArtisOpus If you have one it's not exactly easy to find.
@@bruceyoung9692 can’t tell if this is a troll, it’s literally the first video to come up if you search Artis Opus brush care ..😂
@@bruceyoung9692 are you unfamiliar with how searches work? It could not be easier to find.
We agree! We do live tutorials on our products 5 days a week! twitch.tv/monument_hobbies
69! DUDES!
so immature with the parts num. being 69
Fleshwash
I've used both the Black and Flesh wash, and while the Flesh wash is respectful, I really have to ask WTF about the black wash. It sucked. Drying way to quickly.
I didn't read all the comments about what the discontinued color may/may not have been..
So I'll just throw out this guess..
Teclis Blue
Ok, that's my call.. let me know..
