  • In our video today, we take a wander around the beautiful coastal town of St. Ives, walking along the stunning beaches, ridiculously narrow streets and back alleyways.
Armed with a couple of books, we take a look at the attitude to bathing in the 1940s and recount a wonderful story of star-crossed lovers - our very own Cornish Romeo and Juliet! We had great fun matching up a few photos of then and now and exploring the history of the Lambeth Walk.
And finally, have you heard of the famous green door in St Ives? We thought it was an ideal opportunity to seek it out and try to discover what all the fuss us about!
Where else can you watch a video about St Ives which covers stories ranging from a true life Cornish Romeo and Juliet, an antique door, feet washing and Widdy-waddying?
    The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on TH-cam, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
We love your comments and read all of them. We also answer as many as possible. Unfortunately, we cannot answer comments received more than a week after publication.
    Frequently asked questions:
    What are your dogs called?
Sorry but we do not release the names of our dogs but perhaps you could make up a name for them!
    What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.

Frankly Vaughn & ‘The Green Door’ saw him once at the Talk of the Town in London. The Lambeth Walk - good voice Andrew you ought to be on the stage ha ha!! & those amazing stories of time gone bye - St Ives is a ‘winner’ any time of the year - the light is gorgeous even on a dull day. 10 out of 10, St Ives is always stunning.

Used to work just round the corner from the real Lambeth Walk!! Oi!!! Fab views of St.Ives in winter (you know it's winter when the bobble hat comes out!!). Lunch looked nice too! Great video with green doors a la Shakin' Stevens and star crossed lovers. (Think my front door might have had an accolade as the oldest in Kent at one time....thankfully it's been replaced now!) Ha! x J x

Hi Both. Been unable to watch for a while but now back up to speed. Have visited St Ives since first staying at St Margaret's Hotel in Carbis Bay in 1984. Now demolished and replaced with modern flats. ☹️. Lots of familiar sights. Many wonderful times spent in and around Carbis Bay and St Ives.
Never knew about the green door. Fascinating to hear what you said. If we ever get past covid, will certainly look at it. Getting older now, so journey from Wales is becoming tougher.
    Brilliant and informative as ever.

I love PorthMinster Beach because, I saw The Queen (god bless her) arrive in Cornwall at the train station next to it back in 2010 or 2011. Great video to return to Sarah and Andrew as I spent most of my life growing up in St.Ives and I haven't watched in ages because, I haven't had time to but now I have the time, it's a nice return video.

Love the “green door” simply beautiful 200 years of privacy … maybe it’s 100 years old…you do have a photo taken in 1931 of the village, too bad there’s no photo of the door though! , that would take you back at least 90 years plus…maybe that number has something to look into…. “love lane”reminds me of “penny lane” superb! …love your stories 💐…. And all the stones came tumbling down!!!! 😉…love the tiny walk ways….your meal so yummy, very warm and cozy for this time of the year! Again, thanks for the lovely video … be safe …Ana 🌹

Hi Sarah and Andrew, Loved todays video. We love St Ives. A long time ago myself and my late husband stayed in a hotel behind Porthminster beach and each morning early, I would cross over the road and down a little narrow pathway which led straight onto the beach, and walk along the tides edge, no one else around - Beautiful! I also love Fore Street with all the quaint little shops especially one of the fudge shops where we used to get fudge sent home at Christmas. All the nooks and crannies with the little cottages (shame about the wheelie bins.) Years ago I remember my uncle who used to live in Penzance in terraced cottages, kept his bin outside at the back of the house and because there was only one entrance and exit had to carry it through the house from the back yard and up through the side stairs to the front on dustbin day. That's the only day the bins were on show.
Thank you for showing us the places we haven't seen. My son and I shall have a look for the green door next time we're there.❤️

Really enjoy your historic cross-referencing with texts/vintage images from your library on Cornwall. I have a bit of a thing about front doors (a little like Andrew with post-boxes). The general rule of thumb for period external (& most internal) doors is that Georgian ones are six-panelled and Victorian four-panelled. I'm guessing the beautiful 'Green Door' is most likely Victorian...but don't tell anyone :). So enjoyed Andrew's singing, only you two didn't join arms and do the jaunty dance-walk to go with it! Here in London I live at the other end of Lambeth (large borough), and had no idea that that stretch of the harbour wall in St Ives was 'Lambeth Walk' :)

    • @CornishWalkingTrails

Very interesting! I thought the same about panelling on doors but I wasn't sure so held back from saying on video. We love that it catches the imagination! Sarah :)

A'door'able video. Did Diana Dors live there? "George Daws what's the scores?" Here's what's behind the green door, though after being in the very old Sloop Inn I am feeling a bit Shaky! There used to be a restaurant called The Kingfisher along the harbour about 100 yards before the Sloop Inn. You had to walk up the stairs to the first floor, where they served the best fish and chips, with tea and bread at a reasonable price. It was always packed and I went in there every day. Sadly it's no longer there, but there's a new modern fish and chip place where they charge twice as much for half the amount!! Here's what's behind that green door! :) 😂 th-cam.com/video/8BnPV9f_Ue4/w-d-xo.html
