Pasty is usually beef skirt, potato, swede and onion plus seasoning. People sometimes put carrot in them now, but this is not a traditional ingredient. The crust was usually thrown away as it was the 'handle' the miners used to eat it, to avoid arsenic poisoning! Cornish pasty has crust around the side Devon pasty has crust over the top like a stegasaurus. Glad you enjoyed it a good one is delicious! Nice to see you in the Southwest hope you enjoy your visit with us and come back in the better weather. all the best James.
Is it a myth that the original ones had half meat and potatoes and half apple pie type ingredients such that the miners had effectively a main and a pudding in one package ?.
We went to St Ives every year (from Barnsley) - and had the best time sitting outside the Sloop consuming masses of Rattlers cider - it's beautiful stuff!!!
Absolutely love St Ives, me and my wife long before we married went there over 30 years ago and have been going as often as we can, last went in October this year. Our children now regularly visit too including our grandchildren. Your video bought back so many happy memories!
It is cold but no crowds of tourists mobbed in back streets Nice to see the little shops in back streets The sea looks emerald green as well Stay safe look forward to next investigation 😊
Loved your walk-about and seeing all those lovely cottage homes in the back streets, each one added onto the next building, higgledy-piggledy style. Perfect views without all the summer tourists 😍
Only know through experience, we went to Cornwall 14 years on the run when our lads were growing up, and we made the mistake of feeding them our left over bits of fish and chips,as a fisherman was walking past, he gave us a right rollicking. 😂😂 never fed them again. Love your vlogs by the way.
Lucky you James we love Cornwall try a pint of tribute or rattles cider on your journey you will have to take Helen down in the summer she will love it cant wate for your next vlog Falmouth. phil & tina barnsley
Oh what a view to wake up to, absolutely stunning. Beautiful place and lovely seeing all those windy streets and cottages. Pasty looked right filling and delicious 😋 your vlogs and music are exceptional now James 😊
That opening was stunning; absolutely stunning. I didn't want it to end. Those images! That music! Truly beautiful, James. You definitely have a talent for making videos. I didn't expect to be made to feel sad and, later, very, very nostalgic. Just keep doing what you are doing for you are doing something right.
That Tesco in St Ives used to be a caravan site called Chy An Gweal. Thats where we'd stay as a family every summer for my 1st 14/15 years Was ace.....peaceful, calm, used to have a shop and an arcade on site Many hours spent playing Space Invaders and Defender in there! Getting all nostalgic now
Nice place, only ever visited the once that being September 1996 - stayed in a little caravan site near Truro, bugger of a drive down from Glasgow and I seen a ghost on the way home, only ever time in my life I seen a ghost, headless fella walking in the direction we were heading ''North'' when we were returning back home. I swerved past him in lane 3 - The weird thing is, the following month I was sitting feeding my daughter while watching Richard & Judy and it was Halloween, they were asking people to phone in with any ghost stories, a lady called in saying she seen a ghost on the motorway and described the very ghost that I also seen, apparently it was a biker that was killed and a few people have seen him, had never seen a ghost ever before that, or after. Thanks again James.
10:40 a little cameo of our local window cleaning company doing some gutter clearing @smithstives . You coped really well editing out that noise. 👏🏻 I could tell you were a pro vlogger by your equipment. What a brilliant video!
Hello James. We are definitely spoilt for choice in the UK. It is beautiful. Have never been to St Ives. What a lovely place, wouldn't fancy going there in the summer though. Thanks for taking us on your journey. Love to Helen, you are so lucky to have found each other.
Lovely looking place. I feel sorry for posties and couriers, having to navigate those little back streets! Winter is definitely the best time to visit seaside places, nice and quiet. Enjoy.
Beautiful opening!! Those seagulls are dangerous! We were walking along and one nicked the top of hub's ice-cream!! Don't let the locals see you feeding them!!😮 Did you see Virgin Street? My dad used to live half way up😊 great trip down memory lane for me, thank you 💜
If you go anywhere near plymouth you can park up kitt hill for free no one a bother you and the views up there are breathless plus you got louis Tea Rooms at the bottom that do really great foods , just down the road in gunnislake you have a fish and chip shop called daves that does good fish and chips
You gotta have a pasty when you’re in Cornwall. It’s just the done thing. It looks a pretty little place. There is actually a Cornish witchcraft museum somewhere in Cornwall which looks mint but it’s actually shut until April 2024 but if you and Helen are back there in Spring then you could both check it out. Maybe pick up merch and a few books to read at night in the cosy van. Apparently they have some really interesting books. Not sure about the prices mind. But it’s well worth a look James
St Ives… beautiful place! Expensive mind down there. Hey wicked video James, loved it as always pal! Falmouth is meant to be ace, never been there. So many places of Cornwall I would like to visit! …. Smithy
Hi James! Another great video. My husband and I go to St Ives every summer for our holidays. We love it there. It certainly is a beautiful place. Glad to see you enjoyed it.
Absolutely love St Ives and Cornwall as a whole ,it's beautiful and just keeps drawing me back.Always have a nice warm feeling when I'm there, and the sloop inn I've had many a pint inn just love the place..All the best to you and Helen James. Stuart ( the mad Yorkshireman)
Hi james, the birds were Turnstones as far as I can tell from the video. Purple sandpiper look similar but don’t have the white underparts. Also Turnstones are not afraid of people. Superb content mate so true to yourself. Good luck to you and to Helen.
Where is yr bobble hat? 😊 The Tate gallery is beautiful there on the beach. It might have closed? I stayed there once and had 2 pasties a day 🤣 That blue van on the beach ‘Coned’ 😁 As a seaside town St Ives is well cultured. Those cute little alley ways and palm trees 🌴 The Sandpipers are soooo cute. 🥰 Thank you for feeding the baby seagull.
I live 5 miles outside Snives. I only ever visit it in the winter as normally you can hardly walk as you are crushed shoulder to shoulder with visitors! 😆
I was there just after lockdown and it was full of Italians for some reason. Summer is a big no. I was busking there millions of years ago one summer and you can’t move.
You found the best pastie shop in St Ives and the Sloop for beer. A magical place but not during school summer holidays it gets too busy. The galleries, beach cafes, restaurants and bars are excellent. Three main beaches one ideal for surfers, one for bathers and the small one great for young families.
Your in my favourite place love St Ives, be down again in June 2024, the small beach with the huts was Porthgwidden, very popular family beach in summer.❤❤
Having walked the entire length of the Cornish SW Coast path, every single foot of the most arduous up hill and down hill walks i have ever done. I love the place. I would move there in a heartbeat. If I won the lottery, it would be my favourite place to live. Stick South of France and the Caribbean, Cornwall for me 🙂👍
At the end of that vlog bud,you look like you were thinking what the fu@k am I doing here for a split second ,keep it going man I’m loving this sh@t,you’re one of the best you tubers I’m watching at the moment, hats off!
James when you come up the other side of the coast check out, Polperro and Looe, you won’t be disappointed. Ironically you passed the cottage that we were staying in. Just back home now watching your video, strange, keep safe, keep well and keep doing what you are doing…..
Hi James I went too st Ives it's a beautiful place mate isn't it ... I went in summer 5 years ago ... That much too see the old back streets are wonderful mate thanks for video cu on next one 💯🤗
If you're going to Falmouth without stopping in Marazion, Porthleven or on the Lizard Peninsula, then you're missing out on some of the best bits Cornwall has to offer. Turn around immediately 😉
i always parked in tremar rd for the last 10 years near the rugby club..used porthgwidden car park too but you have to watch wardens..i never pay anywhere
The birds are either Turnstones or Sandpipers like you say. They are always a lot on Smeatons Pier (left of harbour) as the Harbour Master and public feed them on the wall.
I have just found your channel. Brilliant laid back vlog bit of scenery bit of chat to camera, some food and drink reviews love it keep up the good work. I am from Cornwall so I am pleased you liked the pasty. 👍👍
Glad you got to St Ives, we left this morning, had a week there. Best beach in the world, check out the house that you were parked next to in Porthmeor beach, it was an old council house now look at it, check the rental rates on it, you will be amazed. Great video as usual
This was a great vlog james. Not been to cornwall since 92 myself. St ives is lovely. Perranporth sands is outstanding. Tintagel too. Pasties are lot bigger there eh? Long drive though. Bet you were knackered. Enjoyed this one..great stuff. Id go there again if i get myself a van. Cheers, Andy McC Hull
Hi James. You're in my part of the world Cornwall. I live in Penzance only a couple of minutes from st Ives. Lived in st Ives for a few years. Very busy in summer but dead in winter. Penzance. Newlyn. Mouseall. Are brilliant to visit. St Michaels mount is another good visit. Hope you enjoy your stay.. all the best to you and Helen..
Hi using maps on phone it will tell you where your car is and navigate you back using walking directions you can keep phone in pocket using vocal instructions. I used it in Great Yarmouth when I was staying in Waverley Hotel. Couldn’t find a parking space so drove round a bit eventually found a space a quarter of a mile away. Next morning couldn’t remember where I’d parked it but looked at maps on phone and it told me where my car was parked. Brilliant although it might seem obvious but a good tip if you don’t already know. Love your videos by the way. Been the St Ives many times, I prefer Carbis bay nearby great hotels and lovely quiet beaches. 👍🏻
Beautiful start and wonderful scenery, you show us what other videos don't. Your videos are getting better all the time. But the best of all is that you are you and not putting on an act. Great stuff keep it up.
If ya down in Stives again try the Three ferrets proper beer and no ripoff prices . The sloop is a tourist pub . The ferrets is a local pub with down too earth people . Enjoyed your vlog cheers
Good stuff jud🎉🎉 living the dream pal 🎉🎉...nice n quiet aswell....I'd hate Tobe down ther in summer....done it once.. never again in August....👍 Keep m coming
It is beautiful down there, We went 2 years ago for the first time to St Ives, we stayed just outside in Hayle and caught the train in as in summer its very hard to find parking and so glad we did it was a lovely train ride, Carbis Bay is stunning and the sea is so Blue ♥ the journey down for us was a bit of a pain as the roadworks around Newquay was horrendous in the Sept when we went down and we said we wouldn't go back until the main road was finished as it was very stressful. I was fortunate that a friend from work used to live down there and gave me all the best bits to visit. Hopefully we will go again and maybe stay around Godrevy as we spotted Seals and there was a decent pub that served my favorite drink Blue Moon !
Cant beat a well made Cornish pasty. That one looked scrummy. Oh and ive witnessed a seagull swooping down and knicking an ice cream from a childs hand. They are ready in an instant to make a play for food. As usual enjoyable viewing James. Again im watching the older vids way out of order. Will eventually get through them all.
Well you must definitely try a scone in either Cornwall or Devon on your way back up then you can decide jam or cream first that’s always an argument between the two counties. If you’ve got time on your way back have a look at Brixham, it’s a nice place if a wee bit expensive but the harbour is a photographers dream.
Love St ives and also Falmouth , we go every year . What did you think to Falmouth ? The castle beach side is lovely and also gyllyngvase beach. Oh and don’t forget swanpool just around the corner ! Great video 👍
Hi Jame yes the pasty’s where for the miners, sometimes half was filled with the meat potato and swede things like that and the other half was the pudding side with something sweet inside. The thick crust was to hold and not be eaten. Another gr8 episode James. Seetheee. Maxx
Ha ha love it, 'wait a bit' to the seagull. We were there once and saw a seagull nick a chicken leg, fly off and gulp it in one, talk about cannibalism!🍗
Pasty is usually beef skirt, potato, swede and onion plus seasoning. People sometimes put carrot in them now, but this is not a traditional ingredient. A hint of black pepper for taste!
100% 😊
Is it a myth that the original ones had half meat and potatoes and half apple pie type ingredients such that the miners had effectively a main and a pudding in one package ?.
@@thenomad9853 It's true. I saw a place selling them once but it was only that one time, I have never been able to find them again.
What is a swede ? Im swedish so lm a bit confused.
The birds are Turnstones James, thanks for posting.
When you get to Falmouth try a pint of Rattlers cider one of Cornwall's quality products from 5 degrees west.(pub)
We went to St Ives every year (from Barnsley) - and had the best time sitting outside the Sloop consuming masses of Rattlers cider - it's beautiful stuff!!!
Yes! Rattler is magical!!!

So sweet, feeding the birds and seagulls. That pasty looks lush.
Loved your walk-about and seeing all those lovely cottage homes in the back streets, each one added onto the next building, higgledy-piggledy style. Perfect views without all the summer tourists 😍
Ooh don't let the locals catch you feeding seagulls 😮😂😂 it's fround upon . 😂

Whenever I park in a new place I always go on google maps and ‘drop a pin’. Just in case I don’t recall how to find my back - which is frequently.

Resided up in Norway square, winter and spring are the best times, summer? Forget it you can’t move for tourists lol,
That Sloop Inn is a great little pub. One of the oldest pubs in England I think.
Bude is lovely too...
Polperro..
Hi James - Excellent video as usual. My daughter’s mum is Cornish so this brings back memories of visits to Cornwall.
The birds are either Turnstones or Sandpipers like you say. They are always a lot on Smeatons Pier (left of harbour) as the Harbour Master and public feed them on the wall.
