To hard,,Just jack one side up until the tires is about to leave the ground,,measure that side ,,that would b fully extended,,then measure the other side for fully compressed,,without shocks on it of course,,pretty simple I would think,,you just don’t want a shock to bottom out or fully extend,, your measurements would help you there,,
Lol what happens if you removed your bump stops… i dont do a lot of flexing so i removed them not really sure why. Should i instAll them and then do the measurements like described in the video?
Man this is much more complicated then i figured... soo my Jeep Grand Wagoneer, has shocks that extend only 19.9 inchs.. and with the tires on the ground it measures 19 inchs with my new oem height springs and a 2 inch lift.. So my shocks are pretty much max extended already just sitting on the ground. With the shock off and jeep jacked up so the axle flexs down i measured 21 inchs from mount to mount on the shock. This means my Jeep cant even flex on a pot hole with the current shocks. So i found on 2-3 inch lift shocks from bilstein that measure 22.7 length, how much extra length do i need over the 21 i measured ? Is 1.7 inchs extra enough on those 2-3 inch lift shocks ? Im less worried about the bottoming out of a shock than i am the shock not extending enough.
google did the math for the min size compressed, if you are getting 21 inches from mount to mount that that would be the min size of the shock extended that you would need.

Anyways I had bought 0-1" Fox Shocks 2.0 all around. So now I have the problem of figuring out to get extensions or just get another set of Shocks all around. Ultimately this is a short term for the Long Picture of a new lift so I know exactly what's in the Jeep. So the questions this works for a JKU as well...yes? This is so correct. Makes you no longer wonder....just know that many lifted Jeeps you see everyday... have the wrong shock size.

The reason to unbolt the existing shock is to confirm maximum length of travel. The old shock may be preventing maximum travel.

OK but how do you know what size shock?? How do you translate those numbers to actually look for shocks??
You need a longer brake hose it is under tension when you let suspension hang.

Because that won't always tell you what your suspension is capable of moving to. Your shock could be limiting the suspension movement.

Yeah, it's a good idea to add a little at the top and bottom to prevent bottoming out.
