  • Is Jordan Spieth making a putter change and benching his Scotty Cameron 009? Spieth was spotted testing a Scotty Cameron blade and mallet, both with graphite shafts, at the Travelers Championship. Could Jordan Spieth add a new blade putter or mallet putter to his bag soon?

    I’d say after watching Scottie’s putting take a MASSIVE leap forward after switching to a mallet putter, he’s not the only one wanting to give one a go!

    Thanks David, I know Jordan has struggled now for several years and I hope he can get back to the form he had in 2015, he is still fun to watch with his short game and you can see the determination in his face when faced with a difficult chip. I’m sure you’ve heard the commentators talk about what they think is his problem, myself I think he tries too many shot shapes instead of a simpler shot, like Michael keep reminding him when he won the Masters, “aim small miss small”

    I think Jordan is finally realizing the romance might be dead with his 009. While he’s had moments, I think a mallet change would be ideal for him and seems to be the new trend of the tour

      Several Scotty blade guys have switched into mallets over the last few years and found success (JT, Cantlay, Homa), but it has to be tough for someone who has had so much success with one style of putter to leave it. It's an admission that you're not as accurate with your strike as you once were or that a larger alignment aid works better for you. Pros have big egos, and if they feel going to a mallet is an admission that their skills are weakening, they might fight it for a while. - DD

      @@DavidDusekI agree but don’t. I think it’s less that its his skills are weakening more so that he’s probably been on a run of bad habits and needs to break them. And think changing everything with his putter is a good way to break those habits he might’ve created. yeah his strokes gained with be bad for a while but it’s not like he’s doing fantastic either

    the welded neck is considered an upgrade when purchasing a tour putter i think it's a 500 dollar upgrade, at least it was, not sure now it may be more....

    Then Jordan went out and made a ton of putts at the John Deere on Saturday, I assume he was using his 009.

    The shaft is a ust all in with Scotty Cameron branding. Surprised you didn’t already know that

    • @DavidDusek
      @DavidDusek  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Indeed, it’s a UST graphite shaft. What really got my attention is that it is branded Scotty Cameron. I have talked with Scotty on several locations about graphite shafts and he seemed hesitant about it. Scotty Cameron putters already go for about $400, so going with the graphite shaft in one would probably boost the price to at least $550 to $600. Scotty told me the challenge would be putting a graphite shaft in his putters that would give a performance benefit while not getting the price to be even more out of reach for many players. If the UST shaft can be bought at scale and made available as a stock option, to me, that’s a big deal. - DD

      Agreed. Very angular. The idea is the alignment line is good, but lots of other angles in the head keep your eyes focused on the ball. Couldn't be more different than a 009 from a looks perspective. - DD

      A mallet might serve him well if the Open greens are slow as they often are. I’ve noticed how often he is leaving putts short of the cup on fast greens.

    Jordan is FINISHED!
    He’ll never get back to where he was! No more majors! Mediocre AT BEST when compared with the world’s best! He’s basically average at everything except IN THE PAST putting. Also not a fan of his leading edge chipping! Dragging the handle is not a very effective way to chip. Letting the club bottom out with bounce is the way to go! Like Scottie, Tiger, and others.
