There is a reference to 73 yards; Harriet says that the cctv camera was "positioned in a storage yard 66m away. 73 yards = 66.7512 meters. If this tape were not from a camera, but from someones memory, due to the distance, no matter the unit tech, you still wouldn't be able to make out the hooded figure's face. Also, when ruby is getting the cctv footage, there is a small snippet of the radio, which has a distorted screen, and has a similar voice effect to that of Harriet when she is listing the names of the gods. It also says on the screen "ce not available", which happens when the radio is surrounded by things, usually on a large scale, like hills, but it could be Sutekh, as it is referencing the same storm that Mrs Flood saw coming. Another point, Mrs FLOOD, aware of a supernatural STORM, as the god of DEATH approaches. Furthermore, when Mrs Flood goes to Ruby's house, she says, "It's nice for me to get out. I'm always hiding myself away!" One last point, Carla refers to Mrs Flood as Mrs F, and the gods like their anagrams and initials and such. The actual last point is: What is the tech the Susan Triad was going to give out to the whole world for free? She also says when she is breaking down, that "all my ideas come to me in dreams." Anyway, I liked this one.

when they detect the TARDIS in the footage, Kate also says that it's "20 meters" behind its original position, and I think that's a very specific thing to mention. especially with the CCTV camera being positioned 66 meters away.

One potential reference: the dictionary is very careful about not having Ruby move during the time window and when the explosion breaks the glass to end the tone window, the pattern of the broken glass pattern resembles the fairy circle.

This episode felt like vintage RTD first-part finale, with him using theories and twists to distract from the bigger twists coming down the tracks. It defintely felt like Bad Wolf or Utopia, with a gradually unfolding mystery being used to distract you from what it's actually building up to.
I have a theory that either the Flux, through sheer scale of death and destruction, summoned Sutekh.

    • @maiahochheiser7628
      @maiahochheiser7628 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

I'd love if it was the flux that summoned him... Would make people ease up on the whole series.
I saw people thinking Sutehk entered in While Blue Yonder, but that didn't make sense to me because of *how* the Tardis left in The Star Beast, like that seemed suspicious to me. So the flux would make sense. Maybe what 14 did with the salt was the final straw that let Sutehk through

10/10, no question. This episode ranks up with Bad Wolf as one of the best first part finale in Doctor Who history. It's hard to keep tension for a whole episode without the episode feeling like a drag, but The Legend of Ruby Sunday pulled it off.

MY GOAT. There's always a twist at the end, fuck yeah. Gabriel Woolf is 91 and he sounds perfect. Also good catch that the rainbow swirl around 15 in the marketing is similar to Sutekh's vortex. NAH BRO
I am in absolute awe, doctor who has just reached one of its heights im not even kidding.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever had such a physical reaction to any show ever.
That build up, the naming of the gods (did I hear the mara or am I tripping?) and THAT REVEAL. Like I was pretty certain as soon I saw the red lights beaming out of the sand storm thing earlier in the episode, but god damn it did not detract from that absolute masterclass of a reveal. Nearly cried.
And the fact that the whole episode I’m going like “please please please sutehk” like I’m expecting this guy and when the brother actually pulls up it’s still the craziest fucking shit ever. DAMN
Best season I don’t even care. Like yeah I’ve always said series 5, and it’ll always be in my heart. But this consistent run of quality, ALMOST unrivalled (in modern)
Also I know the trickster was name dropped, but I wonder if he still somehow has a role to play. Like we all remember how his theme basically played out of Ruby, and Maestro was like “nah what’s he doing in there brev” (Direct quote) Like they were confused. Idk if they’d be confused if it just simply signified sutekh. Idk where this thought came from, but I just think it’s curious.
Also it’s just sorta unbelievable at this point 14 is just chilling at home cooking a roast dinner for the family or something. Like where is he??? Bro sutehk is here, get your ass over here.
Anyway I think I’ve a little bit lost my marbles, can form much of a thought that isn’t just pure hype, I am very happy. Cheers Russell.

It had me thinking the master was gonna pop outta no where and tbh i wouldnt mind if they did. Either way words cant express how excited I was going in to this episode, I knew it was gonna be like Utopia where theres a big reveal then everything goes to shit -> weeooo "TO BE CONTINUED" . And the reveal of Sutekh is SO intense and super rewarding, though not as much for me cuz I just watch theory vids and go "ah that would probably be cool". And oh my days was it cool. Cant wait for that second part to release and hopefully it answers some of my burning questions like who even is susan triad why was she having "dreams" and who rubys mother is which will be interesting.

I really like the projection of the Doctor this season. It’s one of a kind and maybe underrated. For the first time in my memory, the doctor is failing so much, and not because he’s less smart or quick or whatever, but he is well and truly out of his depth with the power of the gods. We can see this major effect on him, he feels so defeated as he’s gone through so much hurt and loss already. I am truly rooting for him now, and can’t wait to see how he manages in the finale. He’s got a lot of growing to do, and I am so happy that we get to see this. It’s so fresh and interesting in the same way that the 10th was so conflicted between his good and “time lord victorious” side.

Incredibly suspenseful finale kick off. That reveal man OMG. RTD is just killing it. Here’s my theory for how it all connects.
    - The salt in Wild Blue Yonder (obvs) released the gods.
    - Mrs Flood has been orchestrating the release of Sutekh.
    - Ruby is the daughter of Sutekh and Susan Twist (hence god like powers of creating snow). When she enters the tardis, sutekh is able to latch on and break back into reality gradually.
    - this is why the tardis has been crashing into places etc as it try’s to shake off Sutekh.
    - In 73 yards, when everyone runs away after hearing about Ruby, it’s because they are being told that she is the daughter of Sutekh.
    - Whilst the realisation of this truth may initially position Ruby as an antagonist, it could ultimately be her that saves the day by unlocking her god-like powers and defeating her father?
I love the way RTD is literally playing on our theories and sending us off course this season, who knows where we’ll end up next week 😅

RTD is the king of cliffhangers and he hasn't missed a beat since he left the show in 2009. This episode was HHHYYYYPPPPEEEE!! As someone who hasn’t watched the pyramid of mars, Sutekh seems like such a cool villain for a finale. The writing itself is very fleshed out and doesn’t feel thrown together, although there are some parts that made me cringe a bit Ngl. However, I can overlook that for everything else this episode does right.
My favourite part of this episode is in the time window where the soldiers body is first shown: Kate Stewart actually CARES about the fact that someone that seems insignificant to the audience has died, and the look she gives to the doctor has soooo much sub-text. In a previous scene, where Kate comforts the doctor when he explains why he’s never mentioned his granddaughter, and she says he brings hope, but the look she gives him is almost an admission that the doctor is right when he says he brings death and destruction. I love actually feeling that the characters themselves are human beings.
9/10 episode, only flaws are those cringy bits of dialogue, and the main flaw for me is that they NEED to land the second half to make this one remain amazing, so I can’t give this a 10 until next week in case it makes it all for nothing, but I have faith in the boy Russell.

Apart from Space Babies (which I'll admit I'm really not a fan of), this season has genuinely been really good and has to be up there with my top 5 seasons of NuWho.
I've yet to see Pyramids of Mars still, but you've made me want to go back and watch Classic Who and I'm currently on Season 10 (I can't believe how insanely good the 3rd Doctor's era is, he's jumped his way up to being one of my top Doctors). I was absolutely blown away by this episode! Very rare to see a parallel plotline in a season finale in this show - the doctor with Susan Twist & Kate with Sutekh. Masterfully done.
The time window scene was really well brought to life visually and conceptually; I felt genuinely nervous alongside all of the characters. Unsure how safe it was, whether the robed woman could actually see the doctor, whether they were actually changing the past, whether the past Tardis would become real in the time window...Fantastic tension and it all built up perfectly to the mysterious presence around the Tardis.
Also the visual effects at the end of the episode were outstanding, clearly the Disney budget has done wonders. The reveal of Sutekh, the face prosthetics on Susan Twist, the assistant crumbling into sand - all immaculate.
I'm really hoping that the second part of the finale doesn't let us down, because if the quality remains as high as it was in this episode, we could have a new best finale on our hands!

  • @algaenthusiast
    @algaenthusiast 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Ok, this one was an absolute banger. The really nice character moments, the emotional hook of Ruby's mission to find out her parantage, the poking fun at the audience with that TARDIS anagram (which kind of turned out to be relevant lol), and most of all the tension. Seen a lot of people say it's not very rewatchable for some reason, I've watched it 3 times already and it held up. Am I the crazy one here?
But the reveal. Oh my god the reveal. Brilliant, I've rewatched the scene from the start of when the Harbinger started monologuing to the end of the episode, so many times. It's just a god tier reveal, probably second only to the Master reveal in Utopia and the Daleks reveal in Bad Wolf. Absolutely insane. And I predicted it before it was popular! Sutekh letsgooooooo. I'm so happy, RTD has so far picked GOATed classic villains to bring back. And voiced by Garbriel Woolf again. Just amazing stuff.
RTD also really knows how to make characters spout words in a way that makes what they're talking about crazy and fascinating and grandiose. He did it when describing the Time War in his first era, in that monologue he pulled it off again, with all those gods. Though obviously we already know some of them, Mara reference letsgoooo. Give us a trippy Mara episode in S15 RTD, you know you want to do that.
The scene with the time window was brilliant too, some real creepy stuff there. Feel so bad for Ruby, who's being baited yet again into thinking she'll finally know who her mother is. Next episode it's gotta be revealed for sure. Also Kate, really not a fraud at this point, that look she gave the Doctor after he basically sent that colonel to his death. I sense there will be some conflict between them in the future.
And then there's Susan, I will be shocked (and probably frustrated) if she's not in Empire of Death. She's been referenced more explicitly than ever, then baited this episode, I knew Susan Triad wouldn't be her because of that. But I'm so so so hoping she'll finally return, it would be insane to have her mention be the end of the cold open and then just not have her in the story.
Anyway, after all my rambling I'm thinking this could be a 9/10 so far? It's peak, but my final opinion hinges on Empire of Death, and while I have faith I can't in good conscience decide on a final rating of the first part of an incomplete story. That would be like rating Pyramids of Mars by parts 1-2. So hyped for more Sutekh, I wish I could watch Empire of Death through a time window to the future.

bro I loved it so much, kate Stewart is amazing as always but she knocks it out of the park with this one, and I love the fake out with Susan triad cause like all the fans were saying s triad tardis was too obvious, the only thing I would have changed is that the marketing gave away the tardis making the weird groaning noise through a TH-cam short where they showed every time it happened(apparently it’s been happening since wild blue yonder!) I wish I didn’t see that so I could have looked back on the past episodes and noticed them. But other than that I loved everything about this, the definitely legal way I watch the new episodes kept freezing and at one point I yelled cause it froze right when the sutekh cloud showed up. What an incredible episode! MASSIVE hype for next friday! I think the last time i was this excited for a live Dr. Who release (not counting the 60th anniversary specials) was the David Tennant specials that rounded off his run as 10 with "Day of the Doctor" coming in close second.
I know that this is an utter crackpot theory, but Carla calling the voice "The Beast" got me thinking. What if Sutekh and The Beast from "The Satan Pit" were the same entity? IDK much about Sutekh as I never saw the classic series, but from what I gathered, The Doctor banished him at the end of Pyramids of Mars. What if his banishment sent him through time and space and dropped him off at The Impossible Planet where he became The Beast. He clashes with the old civilization there and is subsequently imprisoned. Later, The Doctor shows up and sends him and his consciousness through the black hole. Instead of being destroyed, Sutekh/The Beast was spat out of a white hole into the void beyond the universe with little hope of being able to return; that is until The Doctor and Donna showed up at the edge of existence in "Wild Blue Yonder". The TARDIS was down in the Pit with The Beast for most of the 2-part episode, so maybe The Beast hid some part of himself in the TARDIS and was then able to trace his way back when the TARDIS came to the edge of the universe (and maybe The Doctor invoking superstition helped bridge the gap by breaking the rules of reality for a moment.) This is why Sutekh seemed to emerge from the TARDIS itself, he had been biding his time while regaining his strength.
I know the simplest solution is that Carla's line was merely a reference to the fact that Sutekh and The Beast are played by the same actor, but I thought this was a fun theory nonetheless.

My batshit theory is that Ruby is also a harbinger of another one of the Pantheon who is unhappy with Sutekh declaring himself king of the castle and wanting to kill everyone (because you can't be a god without anyone in the universe to worship you...), perhaps someone like Time from Flux. So the finale is Bad vs. Bad and humanity loses either way before our heroes save the day.

I loved this episode and I love that theyre bringing Sutekh back. Only Doctor Who can continue from a story from 49 years ago, and I love that.
I was on the edge of my seat throughout this one.
I will say I think the next episode will make or break this episode. This can't really act as a standalone episode, so I'm excited for next week.
A lot of people were complaining about the anagrams with the glitchy text, but honestly I loved that. Yeah, it's a bit silly, but also it's such a Doctor Who thing to do.
Also the Master's theme was used in the episode, soooooooo I'm wondering if that was just used for tension or if it's hinting at something else, but the Toymaker's tooth was picked up at the end of The Giggle, so RTD must want to bring him back at some point.
Perhaps the master unleashed Sutekh somehow.
Idk how he escaped the tooth though lol. That's just my wacky theory and tbh I'd rather the Master didn't come back straight away.

What an amazing episode. And what a twist!
I have another theory. Lady Next-door is the Dream God (or maybe Dream Lord?). You can't have death without slumber: Hypnos and Tanathos.
I mean... Everything that happened since The Blue Yonder is like dreams and you even have a character that is all these characters, but for her are dreams? Idk... Sounds like something is messing with dreams. Even the time feels like in a dream. The way that the characters experienced a bunch of things... Things that we have never seen. The Doctor being aware of the fact that it is a show. The sudden dance crew dancing twist... The giant Doctor and Donna, the Bi-generation, the Toymaker, the Ruby/old lady thing... Too many things that could be dreams. They have not much logic or reason, everything operates like with the supernatural and stuff... Like dreams?
I mean, do you imagine if the Next-door Lady is actually like the Santa Claus from Capaldi's series and the season was a dream provoked by those nasty crabs or the Dream Lord or something? The entire season? That would be a hell of a twist!

I LOVED this episode so much! I physically can't wait for next week's episode!
    So here are my ideas:
What if ... the doctor has been so emotional because of the "double" doctor? What if they are not "cloned" but divided and something went in one and something in the other? Orrr this thing left them (doctors and Tardis) weaker, that's why he is so emotional, and the Tardis couldn't resist Sutek's "attack".
What if the fact that are two of them, disrupted something?🤔 Let's not forget Rogue and Ricky September were a little too "doctorwhoish" 🤔
And another thing I thought that they assumed the hooded being (supposedly Ruby's mom) is crying but what if she was actually laughing? She could be evil. That could makes sense to me!
Oh and question: why does Karla know about "The Beast"? 🤔 What did she meant by saying that? Am I reading to much into it?

I was on the verge of my seat so many times during this episode, really fantastic.
Each one of this season's episodes felt like they wanted to give a different feeling, and what I got from watching this episode was perfect, everything I could expect for the start of the season finale.
For real, I enjoyed every episode this season and the only real problem I have with it is that it's too short, I want more episodes.

I am someone who is yet to have watched classic who. But let me tell you I immediately threw on pyramids of mars. Even has someone who doesn't know Sutekh this reveal and episode hit JUST as hard. It was AMAZING. I got shivers from "it's the wrong anagram" and just Sutekh himself was terryfing oh my god, I got massive The Beast vibes from Satan pit. And given they are the same voice actor I would LOVE if they turned out to be the same entity I think that would be amazing. Everything about this episode was so rewarding. Taking all these fan theories and stuff and then completely flipping it was so so cool. "You thought we were family doctor?" DAMN god I'm rambling Sutekh is just so fucking cool, I haven't been this excited for a finale since world enough, and before that probably pandorica. This season is so fucking peak I'm gonna be talking about it for YEARS

Man what an episode! I think the general sentiment I have seen from the comments sums up how I feel (peak episode, great tension, I don't want to wait until next Friday, etc.), but there was a couple small things I haven't seen mentioned yet. I have seen people saying that Ruby's mother was pointing at Sutekh not the Doctor, which I agree with, but I also think she waits to walk away until after Sutekh kills Colonel Chidozi. But, even if that's true I don't know what implication that would have on the story.
Also, I can't help but wonder with that bit about the CCTV camera being 66 meters (or approx. 73 yards away) if maybe the woman from 73 yards is Ruby's mother. Maybe the whole thing with Ruby's mom is something that is attached to Ruby's soul like how the Maestro says there's a song hidden in her soul and it's the Christmas song. I also think that maybe the reason no one can see her face is because it's forbidden knowledge and it's meant to keep Ruby in the dark about something. So, when Ruby gets pulled into 73 yards story, her mother is still there, but still unreachable. Also, my understanding from rewatching a bit of the Devil's Chord is that the snow and the music are related to Sutekh, which would give some context to why it never snowed again in 73 yards. If Sutekh is the reason it was snowing then the Tardis going dead for the duration of 73 yards would mean to me that Sutekh probably wouldn't have any influence which would get rid of the snowing. The last thought I had was maybe Susan falls to her knees during the speech because she also remembered the version of her in 73 yards and then went crazy until Sutekh took over fully. I'm like 100% sure that both of those are wrong, but man I would go nuts if I was right and these episodes are just too interesting for me not to theorize.
Literally the only criticism I have right now is that for an episode titled "The Legend of Ruby Sunday" it seemed like Ruby was a stepping stone to Sutekh, rather than the main focus. But that's just a small thing and we still have another episode next week, plus at least one whole other season so maybe this more of a long term investment plot than a this season plot. Honestly, I think this might be my favorite season/series of doctor who ever. I always have fluctuating opinions on which doctor/companion/era is my favorite but this season is just so consistently good that I think it's already fighting for my top spot and I have a feeling that next week will just solidify that. Peak shit 🔥

EASY 10/10 MAN. So much was resolved but so much was kept as a mystery, it also set up for the next episode amazingly. I can't wait for the finale. I also wonder if Ruby's 'mum' was actually pointing at the doctor or if she was pointing at Sutekh on the Tardis
