DMR is fun for the features and options you can do. You can make a local DMR repeater with a duplex MMDVM and a repeater builder kit... I think DMR and Fusion sound about the same. Fusion is the ease of analog with digital voice, it's kinda boring. I have a DMR repeater network around me so I programmed all the repeaters in a zone with a single talkgroup. I need to go back and create a zone for each repeater and have each talk group in a separate memory channel, I think they call it Repeater Zone. That allows you to quickly switch TGs. I have an Anytone 578, and Aluance HD1, and some little 1 watt DMR radio. They are all fun to program because you have SO many options. I prefer my Anytone 578 over any other HT I own, I love the Zone based memories.
Brandmeister has gone a little crazy, but it's still cool. It does messaging well. I'm happy to share what I've learned, I had a buddy that really helped me.
If you get a hotspot a Simplex works as well as a Duplex one, if you're just talking across the Internet. If you have multiple people using the hotspot a Duplex may be worth it.

A PDF editor helps to make an "Official" copy of your license...

Thanks for watching and commenting. Sounds like you have it pretty dialed in. Any other DMR networks you like better?

@@JamiesHackShack no I haven't tried others. I only knew people that used BM. When I started DMR around 2020 it was working pretty well. I wonder if COVID rush of people caused the current issues.

Following the same path into Digital as you are. Similar reasons and research. My DM 1701 is on the way as of yesterday. Also, looking at ways to build my own hotspot inexpensively. Either a rasperi-pi zero with a hat or another DM 1701 with OpenGD77 and the computer I am already keeping on 24/7 to host Ham Clock. Will probably go with the latter solution since if infrastructure goes down, I will at least have another handheld for local comms.

Sounds like a decent plan to me! Let me know how you make out. Thanks for watching.

What sort of range do others get with their hotspot? I read one article that stated a hotspot had a range of about 15 feet. My new hotspot has at least 10 times that range. I was worried it might not cover my whole apartment, instead it reaches outside a good 50 yards. Lucked out it was .2% ber without adjustment.

I've not really tried outside but I can use my HT anywhere in the house and my hotspot is down in my basement.

Do you want to try a QSO on Brandmeister TG2387? It's a generic QSY TG that doesn't look too busy. Pick a time, I'll do my best to join.

Sorry for the delay. If you want to give it a shot and see this comment in the next little bit I'll be on there. I think. 😄

Hi, do you need a license to operate a DMR for personal use?

As far as the US goes the only unlicensed bit of spectrum that instantly comes to mind is frs. You aren't supposed to use DMR there nor on gmrs. People do it of course and it would work but if you are talking about what the rules say then no. As far as connecting to one of these networks like brandmeister etc you are going to have to have a license typically to get assigned an id. Not sure if that helps any with your question but shoot back a response if you are looking for something more specific. Thanks.

For sure. I wonder if that is a reading test to see if folks will read the documentation? :-D
