I loved listening to this. I love Mahler to pieces. Am preparing to perform this, and am diving as deep as I can to understand the music. I loved hearing your perspectives on this. Mahler truly is magnificent.

Another influence on Mahler, from the proverbial other side of Wagner and Bruckner, was Brahms, who was visited by Mahler toward the end of his (Brahms') life. The opening theme of Mahler's Third Symphony is, in effect, the "big theme" from the finale of Brahms' First Symphony, and the scherzo of Mahler's Fifth Symphony quotes the development section of the first movement of Brahms' Second Symphony. Not to mention the fact that Brahms, like Mahler, loved the horn and wrote incredibly beautifully for it.
