  • The new Anbernic RG405M has it all -- a powerful processor, large screen, long battery life, excellent buttons, Hall-sensor sticks, pocketable size, and a premium metal shell. The $178 retail price isn't terrible, either. In this video we'll talk about my five favorite aspects of this handheld, and three reasons why it may not be the right device for you.

Correction: I messed up my pixel density calculations, the RG405M has a 200 ppi vice the 228.57 ppi I referenced (which is the ppi of a 3.5" screen).

Hey, thanks for the video, I just got mine earlier this week and I love It. I love how you set everything up, obviously I know you have a lot of practice with customizing devices and android devices which i personally don’t, I’m still quite the noob. Im curious how did you change the theme/appearance for Daijisho from the default? It’s a darker theme that looks so great. Also when you were going through Retroarch, the background was like a reddish black color. How did you get that on there? Just curious how to change those things and what the themes are called. As you said, you got It looking “all pretty” and after spending $200 on this one compared to under $80 for a Miyoo or 35XX, I obviously want to make this device as clean and awesome as possible.
Hopefully you see my question, thanks in advance!

@joshuasuarez2370 that's a tough question - depends on your definition of "well", and whether tinkering is involved. @joshuasuarez2370 I mean, the Retroid Pocket 3+ can do it for a bit cheaper ($150) but is a little hit and miss on some games, and requires tinkering with settings to get working well. I have one, and it does work for Melee, but I had to fiddle with settings a bit. The good news is that it can use Bluetooth controllers and the HDMI out to play with family - it's a good time!
This device is a little more expensive, partly due to the metal shell if that matters for you, but same chip and generally same performance as the cheaper RP3+.
If you want decently good performance without the tinkering for Gamecube, the Ayn Odin Lite will probably just work out of the box, with a bigger screen/size, at $199. Hope that helps! RGC has videos on all of em if you need help making that decision

I have a video topic suggestion for you that I don't think has been covered. What do you recommend in terms of save game backups and transfer between devices? I am going to fully transition to the Steam Deck for retrogaming but when I can't take it with me or if the battery dies I plan to use the Pocket Flip because of its portability and battery life (compared to Miyoo Mini). I think that since EmuDeck uses retroarch and Emulation Station that I should be ok as long as I use the same method on the Pocket Flip (except substituting Daijisho for the Emulation Station frontend since it isn't on the Play store). I heard that retroarch on the Steam Deck makes use of cloud saves as well so that is encouraging.

    1. HDMI out - I love playing an rpg on the bus out in the world and coming home and throwing it up on the tv

Same, and those “similar handhelds” in my cases included Nintendo Switch and Analogue Pocket. I used to see pictures of people's retro handheld collection on the sbc subreddit. I was glad to not be a collector and just be able to enjoy playing. I had a Retroid Pocket 2 and wasn't really happy with the device. The d-pad made my thumb sore after a while, and I didn't enjoy playing N64 games (which was the reason I had got it) without c-buttons. I thought the digital slider would have worked. The ZL button broke, and the joystick drifted, so I figured I'd wait and get a handheld that could do N64 no problem.
When the 3 came out and it was close to doing GameCube, I figured I'd wait. I ended up with the 3+. The D-pad and buttons are fine but not perfect. Seeing this makes me want to try an Anbernic device.
And now I understand the collectors. No device is perfect, and you keep wanting to get something that has one thing you like or does better than your other device(s), or has a different size. Like the 3+ with grip fits fine in my jacket pocket. What will I do when the summer comes? Get an Anbernic? Lol.
