    What happen if the *imperative* is *negative* ? For example: "Don't be so rude". Is it correct to say "Couldn't you?"? or is it "Could you?"?

    • @bbclearningenglish
      @bbclearningenglish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Hi Sam,
      What a great question! In the majority of cases, if the imperative is negative, we still use a positive modal tag. Here are some examples:
      Don't be so rude, will you?
      Don't keep doing that, would you?
      Don't leave too fast, could you?
      It's also worth remembering that this is true in the majority of cases, but not all. Context, tone and emphasis may cause changes - especially with modal verbs!
      We hope this has helped.

      "Champ" is a contraction of the word "Champion". Hope that helped.

    I did well throughout the test just as Felicia did. The presenter was unfair to both of us, though. Wasn't he? I wush you could have given us a quick tip about the expression "innit" , which is often heard in English movies, that dominates almost all question tags options.

    • @anglexdangle
      @anglexdangle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahmed GUEBBOIUH I think Dan covers that one in BBC Masterclass common native speaker mistakes :)

    • @bbclearningenglish
      @bbclearningenglish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Ahmed. Will is always unfair, but you still wrote a great question tag, didn't you?
      In regards to your question about 'innit': Innit is a contracted form of the phrase 'isn't it'. Over time, people have begun to change the pronunciation to 'innit' For example, It's Tuesday today, isn't it / innit?
      In addition, it's very common in informal circumstances to use 'innit' as a general question tag regardless of the grammar of the original sentence, e.g. You do like football, innit? (rather than , don't you?)
      It is very important to remember that the word innit and it's use is considered a mistake by strict grammarians and we would recommend that you don't use it!
      Also, as CriptoMania (thanks!) mentioned, Dan does indeed cover this in the masterclass video: Native speaker mistakes. You can find it here: www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/course/towards-advanced/unit-13/session-1

      No, they do not always sound rude - in fact it can be a less direct way of telling someone something.
