Why Is Singapore Bad At Football?

  • Thought it would be interesting to explore the reasons behind Singapore's recent underwhelming performance in football. The Singapore team gave their best everytime they step onto the pitch. It's not the fault of one individual or even one organisation. I think it's a problem entrenched deep within the fabric of our society itself.

Good effort, bro, to bring awareness to the topic. However, I feel that everything said was too superficial. I believe a lot of people can talk with you about SG football for as long as you want, but first a few things:
    1) the rat race is everywhere. We just have to cope.
    2) we were never good at football in the first place.
    3) even the best Asian aren’t close to being the best in the world. Just look at the representation in UCL and European Big 5 leagues.
    4) compare us with small European countries aren’t relevant because their base level and our base level is different. Like we don’t have an equivalent of Belgium’s Anderlecht here.
    5) throwing money can bring in hype but is not a long term solution. Even the Chinese are beginning to stop doing that.
    6) moving overseas is the way to seek higher level training and match play to improve. I’m fine with players going overseas, just that they shouldn’t settle for a weaker league for the sake of only money, especially key players in the NT.
I more incline to seeing ourselves taking a different approach, whereby, yes result of the NT still matters, but we build for everyone, not just football fans, that is not entirely tied to the result on the pitch. For one I hope to see more from Tampines Rovers, which can set an example. Nice new stadium in a compact town, Tampines Rovers can be more relevant to the Tampines people with various engagement activities and bring in different people to identify themselves with the club, whether they like football or not. From there we move to talk about the rest, like youth development and result.
Thanks for maintaining your attention on my long reply. By the way, I saw your video on Bolasepako, a shout out to Pohui as well here. Again a nice effort, but things aren’t that simple as it seems to be.

Hey Frankie, thanks for commenting. You are right this issue is not a simple one. I planned to make a video for less than 10 mins so I can't really go into too much detail. I like your point about tampines. I think community engagement and having the community feel that they have a stake in the team's performance and a sense of belonging to the club will really help. And I really like their new stadium and facilities.
      4) Yes I agree with you. Belgium was just an example of how a nation can improve their football by rethinking their youth system.
      3) Football is very much a physical game and I think it suits the europeans with their bigger stature. Although south america has been really successful despite their relatively smaller frame. I might look into this and make a video on it.
      2) We were never good by world standards but were at least decent in SEA but now we are really not doing too well.
Again thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hopefully the powers that be take steps in the right direction. Cheers bro.

Back then years ago we were the better team when players like Precious, Agu Casmir, Shi Jiayi, John Wilkinson, Fahrudin Mustaphic helped to lift the trophies in several occasions but now everythings changed. I felt quite disappointed seeing them exited out of the aff suzuki early and you are right its not just one individual's but the whole football team gotta wake up their ideas. Even in friendly matches they can't even beat the middle eastern country. I believe that one day the football team will changed again and hope to winning more trophies in the future. Nice video btw bro 👍

Interesting analysis. I was looking at the AFC U-16 Championship qualifiers and noticed that Singapore got beaten quite heavily in all their matches. Singapore needs to put more emphasis on developing coaches at youth level first, followed by turning their professional clubs into more sustainable entities. It is unrealistic for Singapore Premier League clubs to have large fan bases unlike their neighbouring countries, purely because it is such a cosmopolitan place. They need to invest more into developing academy football, increase competitive academy matches and ease players into the first team. This will ultimately expand their talent pool and increase the frequency of more high calibre individuals in the national team.

Fadzil - appreciate your efforts in putting up this video and more importantly, your desire to seek out answers to this question. It is unfortunate that sports has gone beyond just passion where monetary rewards speaks louder than the intrinsic form. Those days as a young boy, I watched the Lions, comprising of Dollah Kassim, Rajagopal, Quah Kim Song and many more; it is racial harmony in action. The national team was helmed by Uncle Choo, enduring and passionate despite being in wheel-chair. The spirit was great and that was the identity which characterised the national team. Life today has become far more complicated and that has intertwined with one's passion, priorities and commitments. In the past, Singapore may not be in the World Cup or other more prestigious platforms, but their testimony in domestic competitions was a household frenzy, in which the common folks could identify and be proud of. We have not allowed our dreams to falter in pursuit of undue expectations, but held our heads up to the bigger picture in fostering a Singapore identity.

The issue of local football is a very broad topic. So broad, I believe the right person can write a whole book about it. There are many issues that need solving. FAS (which is being solved slowly but surely by elections), SPORTSG funding, lack of support from the masses, lack of sponsorship from local companies, etc. They all simply cannot be addressed in a 9 minute video. However, this video does a good job in highlighting some of those bigger issues. 👍

What you said is just small part of the reasons. When you mentioned about Singapore football during the old days, our national teams is full of passion and combination in every single match. So even when Singapore team has lost that match, our supporters will still behind the team and praised for them. During those years, our players have nothing in return for their sacrificing but the bright and respect from the nation. So If our football standard was worst, it was not just the reason of the income, the most important thing is the players them. Besides, We need a couch that have the foresight of choosing a player. This is my personal views.

Great analysis bro! I would just like to add a few more points:
In order to be good at a big sport like football for a nation,
    1) citizens must have passion in it, especially the young kids.
    2) must have whole country's full support, e.g.: many free and good quality football fields, parents' and schools' support and recognition for football.
    3) must have good quality and trained coaches, especially for kids' coaches.
    4) And the most importance is to establish systematic youth leagues according to different age categories and different skill levels. e.g.: pro-club league, Pri and Sec school league, etc.
Take Japan as an example, Asian country should be able to play great football as well. Japan have spent almost 30 over years to achieve everything mentioned above. We Singapore really have a long way to go...

Great video bro. Keep it up. As a die hard football fan, I agree with what you said in this video. But to add on to it, I believe that Singapore players are overrated. Look at the S-League. Is there anything to play for in the 1st place? Even if they ended up last in the table, will they even bother? There is no relegation system. I been to few S League games last season and the fans turnout was really poor. I see for myself that I came to a conclusion that 60% of the attendance came because they bet on the games, not because of their passion and support. If you want to look at the right perspective on SG Football, you can watch Andy Penders's vlog. He said what was supposed to be said about Singapore's football. Thank you.

The problem is, there’s plenty of young talent out there, why else do we have NSG, it’s just that they are immediately turned away by the lack of pay, support and/or recognition that they ought to deserve. For example, I joined primary school in 2014. That year, our junior football division came champions in south zone and seniors in 4th. It was our first time that both have made it into the top 4. I didn’t know till 2019. I have 2 friends in secondary school who have gotten requests to join the U-16 National Team, but both rejected for the same reasons; the usual parents waterfall. I think Joseph Schooling’s mum was right. We don’t have enough competitions that are required to build competitiveness. Our forefathers were focused on building the nation, but now that’s done and we can look to other stuff, the problem is there are still some that cling on to the hope that there is still something left to do. We need more people like my sec sch principal. He said if the c, b or a div makes semis/finals he would let the school watch it.

A great summary. However, as an outsider that loves Singapore dearly, there are a few things that are hugely obvious that you missed. There seems little to no unity in the team. ie Chinese Singaporean, Indian Singaporean and Malay Singaporean are often referred to, oh and foreigner (ie a naturalized player like Bennett and Duric etc). There is only and should only ever be ONE Singaporean, regardless of background. If you wear the shirt, play for the country, then you are one thing, SINGAPOREAN.
The next is the problem that Chinese Singaporean are the largest population to be under represented in the team (I believe). In order to be able to select from the best, all need to be represented.
Finally, Singapore, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE realize that the PL, La Liga and Bundesliga dont care about you! Stop with your fascination of European Leagues that dont care about you and never will. Support your local trams, no matter how bad. Work together to fix the problems. You can arrange a world class F1, you should be able to run an above average league structure... which means moving out the old dead wood and bringing in people that know what they are doing.

Singapore players cannot score, cannot defend. It's a waste of time supporting them. Honestly, why waste my time and money to make myself sad and disappointed. In England, how many times you see those professional players chasing after the ball that went out of play and picking it up. In our S League, I only see our local players shouting at the ball boys for the ball.

To be honest to you Singaporean always choose rich people to be selected being Singaporean players while the poor one they play better than those rich people, I'm not saying that they are wrong but they had to choose base on their performance not following their ego suka² pick rich people instead of poor people. What I mean was about poor people have more skills than rich people tbh

The S league is a joke yet no one has come with any idea to improve it. If Singapore pools are not there to take bets from s league, it will only have 300 fans or less.cos the gamblers come and watch the game. If they make changes like Toa Payoh FC bedok FC or chai chee FC then the residents will come and support the team cos it their constituency. I can vomit blood to see s league team play now they can't even make a simple pass. Conclusion : our soccer in Singapore is dead
