There is so much information that is in this movie that is so compressed and for me that is why it is not everyone's favorite, for me this would have been so much better as a tv series that is at least two seasons long but that would never happen in order to do a series with these justices, it would need a big box office with money behind them so that the special effects would be of sufficiently high quality, for me this is not a bad film and is not among my top 3 worst Marvel films.

Re: Eternals, I truly don't understand how people can consider this the worst Marvel movie. This movie was a character study, instead of the usual action movie that most Marvel movies are. The movie is about the inter-personal relationships of the characters, and the conflict is this disagreement over what to do once they learned about Tiamut's emergence.
Since it was different, a vocal minority expressed their dislike and try to make this the prevailing opinion, so Marvel won't make another movie like it.

What is interesting is nothing else that has happened in the MCU or any character in the MCU has any influence on the story. They did have to mention Thanos and why they did nothing for the audience then it was just jokes at the dinner table. The Celestial is a bit in other MCU movies, Nowhere is the head of a dead one, Star-Lord father is a Celestial but so little has been explained so if Arishem was something else it would not have changed this movie. This course does not include anything from the comics like that Thanos is an Eternal-Deviant hybrid
I think it and Moon Knight are equally independent of the MCU. I like both of them and the theme is quite similar as a reflection of who someone really is when the discover an unknown part of themselfe. I wonder what the reception would have been if the was made independently and not as part of the MCU. I think for both the connection is a drawback because they are so different. At the same time that they are a part of MCU is quite a lot of free marketing.

I really love this movie, the Cosmic stakes and personalities. It really brings a lot of imagination fuel. I am disappointed that there's been no crossovers with anything else to date, so the potential from both after credit scenes have gone unrealized, but the rumor is that the dead Celestial will be very important in the next Captain America movie, as the governments of the world try to lay claim to the minerals in it.
Arasham's appearance in the sky at the end probably spawned several new religions. A terrifying moment for the half of the world that was facing that way.

The reasonable poeple that didn't like it, like myself, won't deny you having the right to like it. I also like some trash movies.
But imo nobody can not argue that there are too many characters with too little time to even care remotely about any of them. The Eternals, the Celestials, the Deviants. They wasted Salma Hayek on what, 2? flashbacks, the Deviant villain is arguably one of the worst in the entire MCU, even with people like Modok and The Marvels ones and imo the pacing is horrible. I watched it on DVD and i fell asleep after like 50 minutes. I am not a comic reader, but i usually read up on characters i don't know before going to the movie (like with GotG) and here we go again with the race-,gender,-whatever swapping and they did Icarus dirty.
Not to mention that this movie is almost 3 years old, and no following movie or series has even mentioned them, or the celestial sticking out of earth.

There are levels of connectivity of what is to come in the MCU that are being stacked and will come together.
Dane and the Sword are connected to the Dark supernatural in Marvel. As to the voice you thought was Fury, that is the Voice of the Vampire Hunter, Blade, who knows of that darker supernatural in Marvel (Dr Strange, the Scalet Witch, etc.). We are still in the build up in the Multiverse and the Galactic expanse of a grander story.

This movie is the most underrated Marvel movie. Intro to some great characters, beautiful cinematography, almost perfect cgi (after everyone sh*t on phase 4 cgi), very cool power sets and costumes, etc. It is very dense (maybe overly) and subtle with its themes but that just means there’s a lot to appreciate, especially on multiple watches. It’s just so unique and subversive, it’s definitely not a carbon copy of so many other superhero pitfalls that I can’t help but appreciate it.

The one thing about this move is I absolutely adore Kingo as a character. He feels maybe the most 'real' of any Marvel character. There's an old trope of good guys go "bad" and "ends justify means" and hard lines being drawn. And it's very refreshing to have a character who says "I believe in you guys, but not enough to fight my family." Because that would be hard. To have a close friend for your entire (extended) life. It'd be difficult to fight them and potentially kill them no matter your beliefs.

fun fact: Druig's beaded bracelet (on his left wrist with his leather jacket) is actually Makkari's! Chloé herself confirmed to me Druig likes to "borrow" from Makkari from time to time (and took her bracelet). I love that detail, and that he still has it after all this time, especially since their relationship wasn't planned in the script at all, was added last minute to the film and Barry and Lauren improvised most of it! (Originally, it was supposed to be Druig and Sersi before Chloé saw Barry and Lauren's chemistry! 🤗)

for their names, in the MCU, the eternals are the inspiration of some known myths and legends on earth..Ikaris=icarus, Thena=Athena, Makkari=Mercury, Phastos=Hephaestos, Sersi, Gilgamesh, etc..
in the comics, the origins of eternals and deviants are a bit different from the MCU..

    • @testfire3000
      @testfire3000 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That is part of the problem I have always had with the Eternals. "the eternals are the inspiration of some known myths and legends on earth" Except we have already established years earlier that these myths and legends were in fact based on real beings. Thor and the entire Norse pantheon. Hercules, Zeus and the entire Greek pantheon. The Egyptian pantheon (Bast in Black Panther and pretty much the rest of them in Moon Knight). In the comics, a lot of these beings had been around for many years before Jack Kirby came back to Marvel with his ideas about the Eternals.
So the Eternals didn't inspire anything, other that the borrow the names of other god-like beings that already existed and make life confusing when Athena is a real character but so is Thena and they both have similar stories.

This movie is a love affair to mythology and history nerds. It’s the movie that caters least to the more childlike side of the genre, overall. It’s also a kind of riff on the whole “ancient aliens” shtick.
If you instantly recognize Babylon, or the “war” that finally sends Druig over the edge, you’ll probably like this movie better than the average person did. If you understand the mythological references, like the speedster being the basis for the Greco-Roman “god of thieves” (among other things) because Sprite has been telling stories about her family across time, it’s a bit of a kick.
The major flaw, imo, is the lack of real chemistry in the relationship the whole story eventually turns upon. Other relationships worked much better with far less screen time.
And I honestly think putting two GOT actors in a movie with a character with a certain name was going to be a distraction.
But I have a very heretical take on this particular franchise. This is the best iteration of the story. The original was sexist trash, Gaiman’s version set the stage for this one. But I, frankly, like the gender swaps. The original story by Kirby had a character who was nothing more than the scientist’s damsel daughter. Of course, I also blame Kirby for making Sue Storm (of the Fantastic Four) a useless bad stereotype for the first several years of her existence.
It’s definitely not for everyone. But it’s an example of Marvel “doing something different” and getting shit on for it.

This is definitely not the worst Marvel Movie, although that was the opinion of some when Eternals first release. I agree that it is probably mostly at the fault that the concept would have worked far better as one of their TV shows to give it longer length to develop the characters. And I agree that it had quite a different tonal feel that didn't deliver the usual Marvel Movie feel, leaving some disappointed I suppose. The worst Marvel movies are still yet to come, but even those still have their fans. So we'll just have to see how you feel about them when you see them yourself.

The implication of Thanos brother being an Eternal is that Thanos is then also an Eternal. The theory about it is that Thanos got Mad Wyry, and that is why he wanted to kill half of all living things in the universe, to prevent the birth of more Celestials which would destroy those worlds (and thus kill all the living things on them). Thanos wanted to kill enough life to prevent the Celestials getting enough life energy to be born.

The other big thing i didnt like was the lack of chemistry between sersi and ikaris. Although you can probably say that the lack of chemistry could be due to the fact that they hadnt seen each other in a long time. But the other Eternals couples had way better chemistry. Haha.
    Makkari and Druig
    Gilgamesh and Thena.
In the sequel, we will probably see Gilgamesh and Ajak again. Since the MCU is showing the Eternals are essentially androids so they can always come back. Both of those actors also signed a multi movie contract when they were brought in.

It had an indie director doing an MCU film, so all the artsy film snobs hated it on principle. It had a VERY diverse cast, so all the anti-diversity backlash people hated it. It's very different from all the MCU films that came before it. All together it was a recipe for disaster. But clearly, on its own merits, it is nowhere near the worst MCU film.

    Thank you for this reaction.
ETERNALS is a much abused and very important Phase IV film. Right after seeing LOKI SE01, where we are told that the Multiverse was sanctioned and controlled by He Who Remains, an immortalized human being from the 31st-century living in a citidel on an asteroid at the End of Time (a variant of Nathaniel Richards), ETERNALS presents yet another and seemingly CONTRADICTORY Marvel Genesis-creation myth.
A host of questions follows: does the Prime Celestial Arishem the Judge know about the Kangs/He Who Remains and the TVA? If so, do they care? Or is He Who Remains above the Celestials? That seems hard to grasp... so how do these apparently disparate elements in the tapestry of story that is the MCU relate?
The Eternals Sersi and Eros/Starfox (brother of Thanos) are both Avengers in the Marvel comics. Apparently, the Eternals who starred in this film were not the first to realize their freedom from the Celestials. As we see with Phastos on Earth, on Planet Titan, Eternals took relations with the indigenous apex species. That explains how Eros is a "brother" to Thanos. Also of note is that Deviants were presented somewhat unfairly in this movie. They don't only predate indigenous species of the worlds they invade, but somehow intermix with them, sharing Deviant DNA. Then a deviant-mutant line is produced with the Deviant DNA that out-competes their non-Deviant relatives. This is how the Skrulls became shapeshifters. And this explains Thanos -- he is not just a Titan, but a mutant Titan with Deviant DNA. And on earth, this Deviant DNA is the X-gene and explains the mutants.
Another Avenger featured in ETERNALS is Dane Whitman. the Black Knight. His ancestor was ancestor Sir Percy of Scandia, a knight of the Round Table in Camelot. His family is cursed with the Ebony Blade. That's yet to play out...
The voice speaking to Whitman is Eric Brooks, the Day-Walker vampire known as Blade.

This movie needed to be a series. It is an absolutely terrible movie that needed much more time for these characters to grow. Every character, in every scene, is SO MAD or SO SAD or SO IN LOVE. There wasn't any room for nuance, which was the movie's downfall.
The movie looks incredible, especially the Deviants, but unfortunately that couldn't save it.

Shang-Chi is a movie I bet most of us have seen. Why not watch it again, but instead of reacting, just hang out with a live "re-view?" Also, there are over 10 quintillion lives alone just in insects! (10 followed by 18 zeros.) Add to that plant, fungus, bacteria, land animals, etc. and that is a lot of life! This was not the worse Marvel film.... Any of the Hulk movies, or Thor: Love and Thunder are worse. (It is just me, but I also throw in any of the Guardian movies as well....) Both Icarus and Dane are played by two actors who starred in Game of Thrones (GoT). They played "brothers".The actress who plays their "sister" in GoT is married to Harry Styles. This was much more pleasant than I remember, and I wonder if it was more fun this time thanks to your commentary! So thanks!

Ok... so the end credit thing with Harry Styles being the brother of Thanos... this means Thanos was an eternal. In the comics Thanos is half Eternal and half deviant (not sure how that would work here and they haven't said that in the movies). That's why he was super strong and tough, those were his eternal super powers.
It's been confirmed by Marvel that Thanos' planet of Titan was destroyed in the emergence of a celestial just like Earth almost was in this movie. When Thanos and the other eternals of his planet figured out what was going on, he came up with a different plan than turning the celestial to rock or putting it to sleep... he knew that if half the population of the planet were gone there would not be enough resources for the Celestial to emerge (that is why him doing the snap 5 years before this put off the emergence on earth). But they didn't follow his plan of wiping out half the intelligent life on the planet and the emergence happened and now it is all broken apart, gravity is messed up and everyone is dead as we say in Infinity War.
That's what drove Thanos mad. It broke him to lose everything he loved and imbedded in his mind the only way to stop other celestial emergences was to wipe out half of life all over the place. It's the reason he collected the infinity stones and did the snap as he knew he couldn't make it to all the planets. So he really was wiping out half the people to save the other people (no idea why the population wouldn't just double in a generation or so as it is want to do, but whatever... he's mad).
Not arguing that 'Thanos was right' here, though he had a point... just not one he made well or seems like the best plan to me. But it explains a lot of why Thanos did what he did and what made him into the Mad Titan.

I think there are two things Marvel could have done with the Eternals to make a better story. First of, they could have made it a series on Disney+ where the episodic format would feel more natural. Another thing they should have done is base it on a comic from 2006 that Neil Gaiman wrote. That series reintroduced the Eternals to the Marvel universe by revealing that something wiped the memories of the group members and they lived normal lives as humans. Using this setup would allow the audience to learn about the Eternals in a more organic way than all the exposition dumps this movie has and would require much less mental gymnastics to justify them being absent during the events of past movies

The effects, the story, the cast (Marvel _really_ knows how pick their actors), how they worked history into it (another thing they're good at, such as in "Ms Marvel" and "Echo"). MCU in this phase is in their best creative mode and just like any kind of media, most people are boring and they like to enjoy things that are safe and comfortable because it's something that they are familiar of. I experience this with my fav musicians and bands when they evolve into something more and great while the old fans bitch and whine about how much they change. They hide behind excuses like "I dont mind change if it's good" when they dont realize it's their own weakness that makes it feel bad. Now when I watch MCU, I excited for something new and unpredictable. Glad you like the movie. No superhero movie is perfect but I like The Eternals too.

I didn't think Eternals was great, but I did enjoy it. If anything, it felt a bit too ambitious for a single movie. When it came out, one of my friends thought Eternals being a Disney+ series and Falcon & Winter Soldier being a movie (instead of the other way around) would have benefited both of them.
One theory I saw for Sprite being stuck as a child is that she wouldn't be seen as a threat when arriving in new locations. She'd go first and start telling stories about the others so that they would be accepted when they arrived.

In comics the defiants tried to enslave humanity. They over ran the planet. The celestials genetically engineered early primitive primates. Made them capable of fighting back and hunting down the deviants. Both species live apart from humanity underground cities. In one deviant city they live together.

To explain some of the end credit scenes, there are more groups of Eternals out in the universe, raising their own Celestials, some have ditched their original plan, to become adventurous. Strict comic book lore, Thanos was a descendant of both an Eternal and a Deviant, and apparently they are keeping some of that. (though, possibly “Brother of Thanos” is merely a title in MCU, like “Child of Thanos” was)

These characters are mostly lifeless and that's a shame. The actors are good but this tale is flat all around and making the Eternals seemingly immortal androids and then, space magic, they also can turn human? It's muddled all around and it robbed the Celestials of their comic origin importaance in the MCU. It's gorgeous to look at no diubt but that's not eniugh for me.

*Hey Emme, did you know that Thanos is also an Eternal? His parents were both Eternals. You might be wondering, “Why does Thanos look like a purple potato?” Well, Thanos has a genetic disorder that turned him into a purple giant. This disorder is known as “Eternal Deviant Syndrome” Do you remember that quote from the Hawkeye series, “Thanos Was Right!”? I also believe that Thanos was trying to save Earth and other planets in the universe by controlling population growth.*

  • @HammerdWalrus

The reason people didn't really like this movie, is mainly because they introduced so many characters at once and so much was shoehorned into the movie. Which is absolutely a fair criticism. It's essentially an Avengers level cast/movie in terms of how many people there are and the level of danger. Think of it as if the MCU started off with Age of Ultron, they start of right away with the main 6, then introduce 3 new characters and kill one of them off. I feel that it would have worked better as a series, with an episode dedicated to the arc of each Eternal and the finale being the events of the Movie in an extra long episode.
Also for Arishem, they are known as "The Judge" and in short judges if a species gets to live or die. Tiamut being in Earth, Arishem and the Deviants going to Earth are about as close as this movie comes to the comics in outside of the Eternals themselves. In the comics, Tiamut goes to Earth, but decides to betray his mission to the Celestials and is trapped underneath Diablo Range, CA as punishment until he is discovered by a member of the Deviants (probably the talking one in the movie?) and his power is unleashed causing Arishem to come to judge Earth. Arishem also doesn't judge as a whole, he judges each individual and says that if there are more good than evil, he will let us live. But if there is more evil than good, then Earth is toast. There is a storyline in the comics that is ongoing(?) at the moment that has Arishem as the main villain against the Avengers and the rest of Earth's heroes, so we could see an Avengers movie about him in the future.

@@dracoargentum9783 Oh Bro I'm not even talking about F4. F4 was a masterpiece compared to Fantastic 4 1992 by Roger Corman (which is the one they reference in Arrested Development etc, it was basically a home movie made simply to maintain ownership over the rights which were acquired EXTREMELY CHEAP in the late 1980s) The movie was made SOLELY as a placeholder and was never even intended to be released, but so long as they could prove they were TRYING to use it, they could maintain their hold over the rights.
F4 looks like the Lord of the Rings next to 1992 Fantastic Four.
