As a tennis player starting pickleball for the first time this winter I initially served just like this and was told by the coach it was illegal. After looking at a few videos and reading the rules I found out it was absolutely fine and the coach eventually agreed with me (the exception being PPA professionals.). I am still experimenting and I actually prefer the sidespin serve from a dropped ball which seems to flummox most of the people I am playing with.

His arm position at the moment just before impact reminds me of a baseball pitcher's. Can an amateur pull off this technique repeatedly without risking injury to the wrist, elbow, and shoulder?
Illegal serve, but this emphasizes just how much more spin you can get by the ball dropping and then hitting up on it. Mostly, Zane’s technique can be used on a legal serve too.

Apparently, the USAPA rule states you can’t toss the ball that high, though I’ve never been called for a high toss in my APP pro tournaments and never see it called in amateur tournaments.
Can someone point out the USAPA rule for non-pro play that says you cannot toss the ball in the air as high as you want on a Volley Serve? Lots of people keep telling me this high toss is “illegal”. Damned if I can find this in the rules???
John, how would you compare Zane's serve to say Dekel's serve with less ball toss, or Tyson's open stance for effectiveness and ease of learning? All 3 seem to have great serves.
From what I see it is an illegal serve as he is tossing it into the air! My understanding as a NOOB is you can only drop the ball not Toss it! From pickleball USA (The server has the option of dropping the ball and hitting it after the bounce. The ball can be dropped from any height but cannot be thrown, tossed, or otherwise released with any added force to bounce it.) For all the reasons you state!
Those restrictions you mention apply to the drop serve not the volley serve (hitting the ball out of the air). You just can't impart undue spin on the ball, but simply tossing the ball up in non ppa professional matches is allowed, as long as you meet the other serve criteria.
Great tips but his serve looks borderline illegal - it looks like he is contacting the ball just slightly above his waist and the tip of his paddle is just barely below wrist. Very close, I'm glad I'm not a ref!

Zane uses a high toss here (which is legal in amateur). John - do you recommend such a high toss? I suppose the higher the toss, the more risk/reward?
Good breakdown. My suggestion is to wear a white shirt with a black background. Contrasting colors work well

Looks like hitting the ball above the waist to me. If I try this serve in rec I guarantee they will say that!!
Given all the comments, it looks as though you need to add a video on sever legality, or maybe show how Zane serves in PPA events.
