      When i moved to ireland (late nineties) nothing was computerised, paper work was misplaced and It wasn't certain who passed and who failed, so 100s of 1000s of full licences were issued, just in case. Id like to say 800 thousand, but that seems a lot, it was a long time ago. I have seen people reversing onto roundabouts after taking turns, more than once..... 😮

    Just a little story about the Driving Examiner (as you mentioned in the video of the chat level) on my second test. Around 15 minutes into my test I was making a very sharp left turn into a road (Nearly a U turn!), as I was turning into the road a car full or lads around my age (at the time) had noticed me having my test and they decided to take part by driving behind me contantly beeping, jeering out the window, overtaking, braking in front of me and generally being a nuisance. My test continued all through this all the way back to the test centre (Runcorn to Widnes). I honestly thought I was doomed to fail as this was the worst thing to happen and it was also my second test. The examiner had not said much and had kept giving me directions and the manoeuvres (even stopping for a short time to wait for them to pass/continue). As I Nervously entered the test centre I bunny hopped the car into one of the parking bays from the other side of the entrance, so this also added to my doubt of passing this nightmare of a test. Upon stopping, the Examiner asked me to turn off the enginer and he then talked me through the faults of the driving exam. He asked me if I knew those occupants of the car and I replied "no.. He stated that I had done extremely well under that extra pressure and the bunny hopping of the car in the test centre was to be expected due to my nerves and the "idiots" that had followed us and that he was pleased to inform me that I had indeed passed the driving test. It was a great feeling and a huge relief and maybe the "idiots" had helped me pass by trying to ignore them and drive as safe as I could.

      We've probably got the most comprehensive test in the world. Not only is the test fairly strict compared to other countries but there are other aspects too. They now need to identify parts of the car under the bonnet as part of the test and before even taking your test you have a theory test with hazard perception test too.

    She drives quite well. It’s really funny to see how different these driving tests are between countries..even European. Here in Portugal we focus much more on the maneuvers side of things, if I recall correctly (it’s been 10 years) there are at least 3 mandatory maneuvers: 3-point turn, reverse parallel parking and reversing around a corner, plus all the driving along like you showed on this video.
    We are also not allowed to put the car in neutral when stopped (foot on the brake and in the clutch - which makes no sense...), if you just "kiss" the kerb you fail right there, and they are a bit obsessed by the hand positioning in the steering wheel.
    Nice videos!

    Ashley, thanks for your great video and upload ; it's the first time I've viewed any so I'll be keeping an eye out from time to time. I'm a little envious as for several years, I trained as an ADI on and off ( as time and finances allowed) had several tests, various passes/fails, and to cut a long story short, got as far as my 3rd attempt at Pt3, where nerves ABSOLUTELY did me in so badly that I was barely able to give my briefing to my 'pupil' and terminated my test within 15 minutes 😢 I've since given up on my ambition for now; MAYBE one day I'll give it another go as I would love to teach exactly like you do!

    Im from Croatia, been driving for a while but find this kind of videos relaxing and enjoyable, especialy Ashleys.
    But one thing I found very curious is the practice of encuraging new drivers to indicate only when they think they should. We are thought to indicate every time we are changing lanes, turning etc. no matter if we are alone on the road or if we are on a crowded multilane avenue. And imo its better to get new drivers in habbit of indicating than encouraging them from the get go to become BMW drivers (joke).
    Love the content tho, its super interesting and Ashley is the calmest instructor on the planet.

    Having your windows open allows you to hear your surroundings to a more intense degree including sirens, car horns, other vehicles sound equipment, verbal warnings, and road noise from the tyres of approaching vehicles sometimes before you can even see the source of the noise, you're also in a position to give immediate hand signals if the windows low enough and it allows other road users to be able to see which way your looking more clearly on approach, adds ljfe to the car and gives more confidence in others to let you out.

    Hello, Ashley, I would like to ask a question regarding mirrors.
    You, as an instructor, have two mirrors in the cabin, don't you? Why don't you have mirrors outside your car like some do? And what is the purpose of the second mirror in the cabin? Is it aimed to the offside?
    Thanks for the video and for your patience!
    Artem

    • @ashley_neal
      @ashley_neal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Artem. The two mirrors I have on the inside of the car are an interior mirror for a rear view (near the centre of the windscreen), and an eyeball mirror (to the left) that I use to see where the pupils eyes are pointing, which is impossible from my seating position sat further back. I have in the past had an supplementary mirror on the left exterior mirror which helps eliminate my blindspot to the left. However, I find it's not required in my current car because of the size of the mirrors. I can lean a little forward to cover all the area I need to see. As always an excellent question! 👏🏻

In that split second you're worrying about what you might have done wrong a couple of seconds ago, your focus is taken away from the road and you could end up rear-ending someone or even hitting a pedestrian. In a moment of stupidity Liverpool's Mayor decided to curry favour with motorists and bugger up public transport by abolishing most of the bus lanes. The road signs have gone, so the road markings aren't legal.

    My first tester didn't speak whatsoever. I had 6 minors and a major, all mirrors.
    The second tester made small talk. I had one minor, which I think I got in the last 30 seconds of the test, as I did a reverse bay park.
    A bit of small talk is probably beneficial for the nervous people.

      Certainly. It helps put you at ease if the person next to you is just a nice person, instead of the mean examiner who keeps writing stuff down. I'm not much of a talker myself, but even I would prefer a talker in situations like that.

    i disagree with "if nobody is there youdont need indicators" first, form habits make it easier to drive, so always use indicators. second, you may not see someone coming. personally, first put out the indicator, then look, then change lane or turn. its better to show potential people coming that youre thinking of changing lanes than getting stuck because theres always someone coming. its indicating the intent, not the action

    • @ashley_neal
      @ashley_neal  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely not. It's better to look and observe rather than just using your hand for an indicator. If you don't use an indicator your inconvenience someone, if you don't look you'll kill someone.

    I hated taking my test, ended up in a row in the car with the tester. He told me to turn right when it was a split lane road, but when he told me I would have had to cross chevron marking to get where he wanted to be. I refused and went straight on, you should only enter them if you REALLY need to, I did not need to. He then spent the entire rest of the testing trying to find anything to fail me. I passed though, when I spoke to my instructer the guy (tester) was known for being a bit of a dick.

    I think you were being too kind during this mock test tbh Ashley. Beth's lack of mirror useage would have become a serious on the test a long time before the actual serious for lack of mirror checks when moving back to the left on Walton Vale. Once she gets that sorted out she'll be fine though. Also, it's not a big deal but you might want to nip the habit of her resting on the gear stick in the bud before she starts doing it while moving. It's not causing any damage in neutral but the synchros in the gearbox can get worn if the gear stick is used as a rest while moving

  • @martinbutchers9497

    I think that was a good drive Beth In challenging conditions. If you came down to where I live in Salisbury you would blitz the test. If pupils who were trained in Salisbury came up to Liverpool I feel not one of them could pass in those conditions and I’m not joking. Down here a test and training consists of a driver on country roads, lanes and none of that intense traffic work, well just a few minutes of it. What I always notice about mirror work, it is a barometer of confidence. The more confident you are the more time you have to use your mirrors and plan. Ashley is right you have very little to put right as most of your mistakes were in just one area. I noted you were using your mirrors in general drive but when you were asked to do something it broke into your concentration that’s when the mirror work went. Believe Ashley you are that good just need more confidence and to relax and don’t judge yourself that’s Ashley’s and examiners job.
