    🤔 Comparing the SL MKIII to two other premium keyboards • Top 3 49-Key MIDI Keyb...
    In this video I demo some of the cool, unique features of the Novation SL MkIII. These are features you probably won’t find in other keyboards. The Novation SL Mk3 is a great keyboard for Ableton Live users, but it also works really well as a synth controller. If you’re a performer, the SL MkIII also has some really useful features for setting up your on-stage performance. If you need to control hardware synths with a midi keyboard, you need to give this a look. These are some of the hidden features, tips, and tricks, you can do with the Novation SL MKIII - including sessions, arpeggiators, sequences, and ableton tricks. But if you have a different keyboard, its worth watching just to learn some cool techniques you can use on your own keyboard.

      Sanjay C definitely the clip triggering and mixing. I’m a loop guy by trade, started with a loop pedal and a guitar, so being able to loop synths and clips of different lengths and put them on different volumes with control over which are playing? Priceless. I also need a 49 key so I figured, two for one special!

  • @markhahn54
    @markhahn54 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Sanjay. Love your Vids! I'm torn with 2 Controller keyboards one being the Novation SL MkIII, a really nice controller, and the Akai MPK 249 because I own the MPC Live 2; I'm trying to figure out which would be a better fit for me. I like both, but the Novation seems to have more features and aftertouch which I use often. Do you feel the Akaki is a better fit with the MPC Live 2 or does it really matter other than MPK 249 has no aftertouch? Just curious about your personal perspective! Thanks! Mark

    I'm trying to decide between this and the Ableton Push. I don't consider myself a keyboard player, so a part of me would want to go with Push, but I really like the light guide / scales mode concept on the SL to help me learn keys! Seems like both have comparable Ableton functionality, do you have a suggestion?

    • @SanjayC
      @SanjayC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're not a keyboardist, then it may be worth investing your time learning the Ableton Push 2. Especially if you plan to live-loop/perform live. Learning Ableton Live + Push 2 is the ultimate in mastering Ableton. And the Push will give you the most comprehensive control of Ableton. If you don't think you need to learn keyboard, then skip it and go for the Push 2.

    Great video Sanjay! But I'm seriously stuck and would love your advice deciding between Novation SL MKIII 61 & Arturia MKII 61. (Apologies in advance for length of this comment)
    - I am a keyboard player and just beginning to learn Ableton Live Lite. I need main MIDI controller to optimize/help my Ableton workflow.
    - I watched your vid on Arturia MKII and was 99% sold on the 61-key (I have Nord 88) due to Build, A-Lab & DAW control
    - Then I saw this video and the Novation's Arp & Step Seq, features I do want to really get into due to the potential for creativity, has really swayed me and now I just can't decide
    (Sidenote: I had initially considered just buying Push 2 (Live integ + step seq) but it is $$$ and I figured I'd still need midi keys, so trying to find a 1-stop solution first)
    Then my question is, how useful/effective do you personally consider onboard arpeggiator and step sequencer features in your music production? I saw your Nexus vid where you seemed to be toggling decent arps and I know Live has a built-in one too. Just not sure if software version somehow is inferior to hardware versions of these features due to lack of spontaneity(?). If software versions can adequately compensate, then I'd go with Arturia but after hours and hours of research, I still can't find a definitive answer.
    I'd greatly appreciate it if you could answer that + let me know what YOU would do if you were me btwn the two or other solutions. Thanks in advance!

    • @SanjayC
      @SanjayC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Eric. I don't think an arp and sequencer is necessary for music production. Its nice for live performance and its fun to use if you're just playing around. But you can do all arp and sequencer type things directly on your computer.

    Still Love My SLMK3, and especially with the firmware updates ( * separate arpeggiators each able to be set to different patterns scales, Unquantisized steps, etc.) The Micro Steps for 'ratcheting' , Having Infinty potentiometers is a plus as it does give UNBELIEVABLE control over Ableton however, I had the MK2 regular before this like the 150$ i think? i payed and that thing was BOMB for the price and how it controlled ableton. ( I wasnt a fan of the drum pads, and the mod wheel didnt work lol)
    However the Pads on The SL are damn Near like an MPC minus the size, Very Reactive touch sensitive, and Granted Im By no means any professional Pianist However I have been very pleased which the Key response and after touch versus the other Novation Models.
    Realistically I was Looking at a Waldorf for about a Grand that had the ability to control modular peices ( after you installed them) when I saw this It was so many Answers in One solution it has been awesome,
    and as per usual No manual and I learned it in three days had all of my 6 synths set up-
    The ONLY issue I have had is Learning the Novation Components software- Or to perhaps bring sessions into the keyboard from the PC...( i had NO idea that upon purchase IT only had Midi Outputs so it took some Quick and wise Ordering to get where I was trying to go)
    anyway It can make my TD303 Sing like a boomin bass box,. it runs all my synths Beautifully.
    This Keyboard I feel is very underated. surprised I dont see it more. I t has Helped me go Modular aswell, Just by having the control voltage sync out for BPM, (or the CV out to my Braids runnin a ARP in Scale mode) in combo with my $ms, SWN, and SMR ( yes I have them both)
    I have been really enjoying your reviews. One of my Favorite keyboards so far and If i am not mistaken the most powerful sequencer on the market. at least that I know of. 32 synths is impressive. I just wish I could work the components, and templates better. Perhaps i am looking in the wrong areas but outside of my minilogue and TR8 ARIA, ( I use the TR8s template and it works?) I cant get the templates or 'Onboard' synth controls to really work- so im reliant on good pitch bends and modulation wheel captures, and luckily the three synths i use for solos are close enough to rump wit. Blessings Sanjay man

      Hey M R T, did you ever figure this out? I was thrilled about this Controller/Sequencer until I learned that it doesn't have the same SYSEX support that Mk2 had. I've had a difficult time knowing exactly how much SYSEX support, if any, MK3 has. Any idea? I'm hoping to control aspects of my Roland JD-Xi through it which seems (??) to need sysex rather than just Midi CC.
