    It's a Ableton push with keys, cv and midi out and scales mode.
    So good

      @@dorsia6938 i never got the appeal of the piano heavy keys. on an actual piano you feel its usefulness physically, but on a synth i feel like it just makes things unnecessarily hard when i could get the same exact expression curve on lighter keys just by pressing lighter
      maybe im just sore because I tried learning keyboards from a guy who wouldnt shut the fuck up about 'how inexpensive uprights are' despite the face i told him im not interested and i just play synth:P
      he knew this before appointment #1

      You manage to get different sequences playing on different tracks? I can't get it to do anything but play the one sequence I make in any track to play and it just plays across all 8 channels. CANNOT get different sequence per channel playing. Which makes it entirely useless...wtf do I need 8 tracks of the same sequence for you know?

    It would be REALLY great if you could also do an update on your previous SL Mk III review now that the v1.4 firmware has come out. A real deep dive especially with the new features now on integrating that with Ableton Live and simultaneously with “in the box” as well as external synths would be soooo helpful.

    17:22 I'm working with Ableton's Python API myself and yes, that's possible.
    The Track class has the properties output_meter_left, output_meter_right and output_meter_level (left&right).
    As a rule of thumbs for people who don't know anything about programming, you can say if it's already possible with another controller (Push 2 already does that today) then it's possible with any controller.
    The API is reverse engineered and there are decompiled versions of the Framework. So anyone can work with the same tools Ableton is using when they are writing scripts for controllers. The only difference is that for us it's much more complicated since there is no actual public documentation. But technically we can do anything Ableton could do (at least on Python level).

    I did give it serious consideration but opted for the Native Kontrol S49 as I liked the integration with Kontrol/Kontakt over mcc as I already own a Nektar Impact so it can do most of what the SL can but the Kontrol can do things NONE of them are able to do. So from my own experience and use, I think nks is superior to straight Midi/mcc and with vst support now in Kontrol, I made the right purchase decision FOR ME. For anyone who does not use Kontakt, fair enough, but I love Kontrol/Kontakt and I love the way I can control and configure key splits assign midi channels through the Kontrol app and press one preset button to change the templates for individual songs and scenes and it also has a button for that to. Impossible to not be impressed with the SL, but its down to what the user wants it to do that makes both machines suit different tastes and people.

    One of the things I wish was totally different is switching between controlling the instrument and various FX in the DAW. When I do live recordings I don't want to take both of my hands off the keys and pause to switch between FX, and I need to because of how far the "options" key is from the pads on the left side. You need both hands, one to press "options", one to press the pad. I wanted to see if this pad control of the instrument and 2 closest FX on the left can somehow be re-assigned to pads on the right side, or if order could somehow be reversed, but so far I was unable to figure it out. If I could use just one hand, I could switch between instrument and FX controls almost seamlessly without a significant delay. Eventually I just worked it out by moving SL MK III and the entire rack very close to my two touch sensitive Planar monitors, so now I just use the right hand to change to a different effect right on the monitor without stopping to play with my left hand. It's not ideal though, because it makes other things a little cumbersome, but I'll probably work it out eventually. Another thing that I couldn't work out is why when I try to assign the control knobs and faders of the older NI VSTs in Ableton to control knobs on SL MK III, sometimes this becomes impossible after the 8th SL MK III knob is assigned. Usually the "page" just turns and the "up" arrow lights up and you continue assigning. But with some instruments used as VSTs in Ableton such as some but not all Reaktor 6 Ensembles, - only 8 knobs can be assigned and pressing arrows to "turn the page" does nothing. Sometimes when I try this again after saving the project and re-calling it it begins working on its own, and other times, - I'm stuck with just the 8 controls and have to "choose wisely" LOL. Wonder what this "bug" is about.

    The Casio CTK 7200/WK7500 and other arranger workstations have 90% of the functionality and a lot more besides. It's downsides are USB only and a menu dive that'll give you the bends. However, it's less than half the price but doesn't have the cool factor but an immensely capable animal all the same with 8 lanes X 256 step X 4 part pattern sequencer via GM, vast Arp selection, drawbar organ with 9 faders, DSP tone editing, 16 track song recorder etc. I could go on about its feature set but you get the picture.
    Novations big plus here is producing a system that ergonomically suits modern EDM and has good s/w integration and now multiple midi output variation. It's tempting but a lot of folks who already have an arranger board have the majority of the capability at their fingertips.
    I've seen a few videos now on this and the same question is unintentionally posed by each. Do you have the time-patience-mindset-musical knowledge to avail of all the features to spend most of your time arranging and perfecting multiple simultaneous sequences or do you just want to get down with a good jam with say two or three lively backing tracks? Having invested many hours doing both I eventually decided on the latter.

    • @MSS-g7f
      @MSS-g7f 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andreimclive I think you'll have to research that one yourself as my knowledge comes from ownership of the Casio and research I did at the time of purchase (a year ago).
      It would appear a lot of the same feature sets are available...such as multi-track midi recording and output, a large variety of tones and rhythm patterns, step and non-quantised sequencing, arpeggiators et al. The reason I went for the Casio were editable tones (envelope, mod, DSP etc), a great Arp selection, a decent drawbar organ emulation using faders, as adrawbars, three audio inputs and audio recording but only on a single channel (a feature I used before I got serious and became proficient in DAWs. (I now have an 18 input channel interface but I have no problems using 10 simultaneously these days).
      The drum samples are excellent but tones require editing before they come close to synth-like sonic delight but you can create some really interesting sounds if you are willing to invest the time in your equipment, learn it's features and practice them. Oh, and the price £225 which is astounding for what you get. Most similar boards from Korg or Yamaha are 3 times that.
      To put it into perspective with my set-up
      I also have 3 Analog synths and a digital synth module plus 2 laptop's an iPad (all running multiple virtual instruments and DAWs and 6 other midi controllers/sequencers from the likes of Arturia, Novation and M Audio. Having said that I use the Casio everyday due to its versatility (large format Swiss Army Knife), dependability (I know exactly how it will sound), 5 Octave keyoard, drums.
      Caveat Emptor: judge s spec not by what's in it but by what's missing, particularly their own descriptions and how they phrase features and capabilities. Try them out and get independent advice. Arranger boards are complex, can be difficult and take time to establish an efficient workflow and they don't have many flashing LEDs!!! Also my own view is they are not specifically designed for EDM, but rather for song writing or live performance. There does not appear to be one keyboard to rule them all so if you're serious you'll end up with a fine array of black plastic like me :-)
      Good Hunting.

    • @goaway2174
      @goaway2174 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Fin, That is a great thought! I already have a Yamaha PSR A2000 that I bought three years ago and it's a mid range arranger with world music capability. I originally purchased it because it has speakers and seemed like a rather inspirational arranger. Note, I generally create electronic, ambient and experimental music in Logic so an arranger was way outside my normal comfort zone.
      I like your idea in principle, but struggle with how easy it would be to use that and control external hardware (i.e. small desktop synths like Roland D-05, Waldorf Streichfett, TR8-S, and other older analog modules). I know I could get sequences sent to each via different midi channels, but there is no way I know of mapping the arrangers controls to adapt to the different CCs needed by each of the synth modules (maybe individually that could be achieved but not sure how you could have multiple CCs assigned to a single control on the unit). Also, the GUI is not exactly immediate as you mentioned about menu diving. I do like the scaling function on the Novation controller and although it is expensive and has some shortcomings it might actually be easier to use in some specific cases depending on what you are trying to achieve. In any event you have given me something to consider as an alternative and I appreciate it!

    • @MSS-g7f
      @MSS-g7f 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@goaway2174 another consideration is that, at least from my own perspective, I actually prefer having more keyboards than one size fits all.
      You should look at the Kenton MIDI-USB Hub (£100) ...plug your USB keyboard into the hub and it's 5 Pin DIN out (no computer) but you'll need a further midi switch to get 4 separate physical outs for individual channels.
      Another poster above mentioned its the price of a Deep Mind 12 - I know what I'd prefer 😉

      midi signal - Your suggestion would be more useful for some musicians. However, those who would use this keyboard to play their favorite virtual rotary organ (B3) instrument plugin would want faders to map to the virtual drawbars. (Although for drawbars, 9 faders are FAR more optimal than 8, so why Novation chose to include only 8 I don't know.) The best scenario would be to have 9 faders AND another set of endless rotary knobs! (Novation, are you listening!?! Maybe on Mk4...)

    Came here because I'm considering replacing my NI Kontrol49 with the Novation SLmk3. When I bought the NI Kontrol I was doing lots of software & kontakt instruments and the NKS support was a big selling point. But there's a lot of annoying downsides - the primary one which is the arpeggiator will not work manually with hardware (over midi etc) - unless you first open a DAW and add the Komplete Kontrol plugin. Just to use the Arp or Midi with hardware. I found over time I quit using the NKS support and now that I've gotten more into hardware and modular, the CV support, sequencer, and even the drum pads and fader knobs are all convincing me it's time to switch over. Thanks for this video!

    Very nice, and a great dive. Novation beat Arturia to the punch here as an answer to the non-existent Keystep Pro, for sure. Further, this looks to be a fantastic controller for a number of Roland products, from the Boutiques to the Roland Cloud software (at the same time!). Finally, with aftertouch and such a nice sequencer, it it looks to be an ideal companion for Novation's own near-forgotten stepchild, the Peak. In addition to the limitations of the sequencer in terms of number of patterns and steps per pattern, I am baffled by the fact that there are only two pages of controllers (for the knobs, faders and button) that can be access using the up/down arrow buttons. There should be unlimited number of pages available, as in NI Maschine or Komplete Kontrol.

    Hi Loopop, do you still have the unit with you? If you do, would you mind testing whether the SL MkIII sends out the full range of 127 possible velocity values, or does it also have huge gaps in its velocity range like its predecessor the SL MkII had? I think that potential buyers deserve to know this before they make their decision. Easiest and quickest option to test this would be to use the freely available Velocity Checker Max4Live device.

    Best Controller I've seen so far, it can do everything and compared to other Keyboards its very clear and easy to use. But this amount of functions is just a little bit too much for me. I have to remember so much (is it the internal sequence or the DAW, what chords did I save on the pads, what Controls did I assign...) that I get lost and then usually end up using only the basic functions because I cant remember everything. I just cant get used to hardware that changes the whole layout with every few knobs i press. Guess I'm used to HW where every knob always does the same thing (maybe 2 with shift).

    Perhaps I missed it, but does this remember encoder positions when you power off? For example, let’s say I’ve built a map for a Nord rack. I map an encoder to cutoff. Original, I know. 🤪
    I turn encoder to like 2:00 position to set cutoff. I power off keyboard, then come back later and turn it on. Is the 2:00 position remembered by the keyboard so when I turn it it doesn’t jump? Or does it do what most controls do and reset encoders internal values to zero on power off?
    Make sense?

Also - BUSY! No Mackie Control? Serious? Only Ableton? Keys and Pads responsiveness? Awesome for hybrid Analog/DAW setup. For DAW-only, seems to have misguided priorities. Loopop: Thanks for a well-made video. This is better than Novation's own vid.

    Your review convinced me to get an SL61 MKIII. While Novation NEEDS to do some firmware updates.... a lot of things could be DRASTICALLY improved.... it's pretty damn dope. And out of ALL my midi controllers (and I have a handful)... the keybed is flawless. It just feels better than my Arturia Keylab MK2, better than my NI Komplete Kontrol S49 MK1.
    But, feature-wise.... Sessions are a fantastic feature... not even mentioning how you can store sequences with Sessions.... just, the fact that Sessions can be any mix of up to 8 Templates.... and the ability to load/save them/swap them out instantly... is one of the best features of the SL MKIII. I will never remove or sell this board from my studio or setup. Some things just have a permanent place. This is one of those pieces of gear.
    I just hope Novation continuously releases firmware updates for it, like Circuit. If they don't, they're shooting themselves in the foot. There is SO much potential with this SL MKIII. I hope they support it the way all of us need.

    I just got myself one of these, and frustration levels are already pretty high. The problem is the Components software and its limited/shoddy features. Example: you want to assign two different Buttons to emit the Program Inc/Dec messages needed to navigate patches on your synths. After carefully configuring the buttons (and rechecking) one button behaves as planned, the other doesn't budge. Other example: you'd like to use one of the 8 faders to control the Master Volume of some destination device. You dive into Components only to discover that there are *no* options to send System Exclusive (SysEx) messages of any kind to the outside world. So it is currently (on 1.4 firmware) apparently impossible to send MIDI Master Volume messages to your synths. A little bird told me "Stop messing about with these, and try the InControl functionality." So I downloaded and installed the Logic Pro X Control plug-in from Novation, and launched Logic. Crash! "OK".. so I head to the Novation support site and enter the required keywords, and lo and behold, there's a support article that explains the problem, and offers a fix. I follow every step of the fix, relaunch Logic (after rebooting my Mac to ensure a clean slate start).. crash. Novation? Are you reading this? I want to give the SL mk3 every chance, because on paper it ought to be a killer controller.. but so far it is not fulfilling expectations (note: my previous MIDI kbd was the Roland A-800PRO )

    When chaining patterns (8:10), can you 'sequence' the patterns? For example if I wanted the order to be pattern 1,2,2,4 and repeat, could I do that? Or do they just loop within a range? Like if I choose patterns 1,2,and4, would it only play 1,2,4 and repeat instead of 1,2,2,4? Also, in this example would pattern 3 be included automatically because it in the middle? Basically, does it only chain a range of patterns or can you order individual patterns that are not next to each other?

    Really looking forward to picking this up, I've been using a KK61 MK2 for the past 2 years, and recently I've discovered it has no onboard memory to store presets/templates for my external hardware. I'm thinking if it's anywhere as flexible as the Novation Zero SL MK2 series as I'm planning on having the faders mapped out only to the second MIDI out port, which will act as fader control for my 8 Octatrack channels. The first MIDI out sending keys, etc., to a Squarp Pyramid, which then will serve as the main sequencer, but the prospect of being able to map all of the buttons on board, or even a knob that can switch instrument channels thru the Pyramid would be a change that I'm so excited to see. I hope it's able to do some of these things. I have initially been looking to pick up the Keystep Pro, but I realize I don't need all the gate/cv when I've already got the Pyramid.

    And advanced but seldom used feature would be to be able to output duplicate data on your choice of channels and ports in any combination. Currently you can have either or both ports, but only one channel, the same channel only , I think, on one or both ports. But it would occasionally be very handy to be able to output on more than one channel at the same time. Like for example when layering two external synths or controlling a multimbral synth. I could be missing something, but the impression I currently have is you can't do that with any controllers currently? Maybe some exotic midi processor, idk.

The Native Instruments S series of Keyboard controllers have the best Key bed since they use the exact same Fatar Keybed(TP/9s) as DaveSmith, Kurzweil, NORD and many other high end units. For semi weighted Synth actions keys, Fatar is considered the best as well as Yamaha's high end Synths. Even the Arturia cheaped out with the MK2. The Mk1 had the fatar. I like to work back and forth between the keyboard and tweaking sequences on the computer to get the parts correct but I prefer to leave the computer out of the performance.

      There’s no midi file import if that’s what you mean. You can create and tweak on the SL without a computer at all though
