    I went through this and made sure my daughter did not, no student loans for her. We paid cash down at the school (in my Dineva voice). she would only take the classes as we could afford them. Now I have to make sure my other daughter does not go through this.. it took me 10 years to get out of student loans- (with no degree ) and I will not have my kids start their life in debt. land of the free -my butt bone

      That is the messed up part, when you do not have a degree after borrowing the money to pay for classes. (so sad and frustrating) I am strategizing to handle this as I type and think of a strategy.

Chile Sallie Mae is stupid as hell for turning away people like you who are trying to do the right thing & make arrangements to pay their student loans back because I would be accepting every last coin that you were offering. Something is better then nothing at all in my book.... but it sounds like their loans are set to keep people in debt so that they can get more money in the end off of interest & other penalties due to people not paying on their loans??? THAT'S A COLD SET UP SMFH😯

    Here's key: I say use credit for purchases, THEN pay what I spent in cash right after. That way I can reap the rewards, no interest is accrued, and still maintain my 765 credit score.

      Malcolm Wallace that's good! Make sure you keep that good credit score. I was able to purchase and build my first home at 23 because of good credit history and finance. Pay everything on time, pay more than what's due, and watch your spending, and remember to use credit wisely. Proud of you!

    • @ThePresentTimeNow
      @ThePresentTimeNow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      L Gill you're so right. I actually have to look into the travel points. My rewards credit card doesn't allow me to gain travel points. I have to look into that. I'm glad Dineva brought this up on YT because a lot of ppl including myself have suffered or are suffering from these damn credit cards and student loans....it's almost like a hush hush thing. It's can be an "ugly" topic so ppl don't bring it up.

After a number of years I was able to pay my loans off early. I literally cried with joy. Sallie Mae is no joke. She will follow you for the rest of your life so pay her and get that house.

    I really feel this is just another way to keep certain ppl out of housing market and make it harder to become home owners. They just started including student loan debt into the debt to income ratio last September. It wasn't included prior to that if they were in deferred or you were still in school. That was my saving grace when I bought my house 4 yrs ago...so glad I bought when I did! But stay the course, don't give up...just make sure you keep your debt to income ratio in check ( it's a calculator online), get rid or any frivolous debt, don't take out any new loans or credit cards and pay whatever you do have on time until you get past the underwriting process once you find your home. I had an excellent mortgage lady who walked me through the process and I closed in 30 days from contract to keys with no issues! I love seeing us wanting to buy and invest...Sallie Mae is just an old still renting the same house for the past 16 years hater!

    Lawd Dineva you speaking truth!! WHY they wait until your credit in the toilet before they try to help you?

  • @reesethe
    @reesethe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Dineva I work in the student loan department at a college in Philly. All you would have to do is go through a rehabilitation with your lender. If your loans were sent to Debt Collection with the Department of Education you would have to make 6-9 consecutive payments to the DOE then your loans will be removed from defaulted status and put in repayment status on your credit report. I understand I see it everyday with students who want to return to college. When you are put on repayment status you have a choice to consolidate with another lender and if you dont have the money your forbearance and deferment starts over (36 months each) with that new consolidated lender. IJS

    Thank you for that disclaimer at the end! I work in the Financial Aid industry and I advise my students to always stay in contact with their student loan lenders especially during times of income uncertainty. The student loan lenders have several options to accommodate most budgets even if you can't afford to pay anything.

    A coworker advised me to build up my credit limits on major credit cards by buying EVERYTHING (rent, groceries, utilities, and Income based student loan payments) on the cards and paying off the total EVERY month. After three years, she had five cards with an 8k limit. She paid her student loans with credit cards, then filed bankruptcy. Credit card debt is dischargeable, she was debt free in 4 years. Catch that tea! Rich folks been doing this mess for years.

      I think the student loan industry is on to this because, at least in my life and a few of my friends, every loan payment arrangement requires a debit card or checking account. I do remember back in early 2000 being able to pay my loan with a credit card, back then I had excellent credit and a job that actually gave 30+ hours (good times), but sometime after 2008 when the world started to fall apart the option to pay with your credit card just vanished and I had to start doing debit, then by 2011 money and job hours started vanishing so I was like Dineva, "F-it". Man if only my magic 8-ball would have said "Outlook not so good" "Don't count on it" "Very doubtful" when I asked about college

    I understand that at 18-19 yrs old you don't understand the ramifications of signing for tens of thousands of dollars worth of student loans, but that word "LOAN", is self explanatory, and as a young person you don't necessarily feel that it's going to be a problem in the future paying these loans back, but once you do and probably won't happen until years later wanting to buy a home, a car, or applying for a credit card its always the first thing that going to stop anything. Perhaps colleges or even high schools should give a class on the long term effects of defaulting on student loans. But good for you dineva for taking responsibility of your loans and working with Sallie Mae to get them out of default. It will take a while, but just know there is an ending.

      @lazygirlfinance 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      lppe x I don't think that's true. I was active duty for 6 years, and I'm now an Air Force wife. I've used a lot of VA benefits like the GI Bill, VA Home Loan, and VA disability and spending 90 days in Iraq or Afghanistan was not required. I know people who have never deployed that get all of the same benefits. I don't know about ROTC, because I went in enlisted straight out high school. I got my degree using Tuition Assistance while being active duty.

      Trevia Smith I was not active duty I was in the reserve and did not get deployed in theatre. Of course you get all the benefits as a wife of an active military member and as an active member. I too got my undergrad paid for with the GI Bill and Tuition Assistance when I was an active reservist.
      Now, other than the home loan, I do not qualify for anything now that I am no longer active. My state college tuition requires 90 day deployment in theatre to get exempt. I went for my masters and the only thing that 'helped' me was Sallie Mae.
      Therefore, military does not always save you.

    Good Luck Consolidating them. Those folks are a mess it took me like 7 months to get them consolidated. My brother who's a lawyer had the same experience. I kept calling them like once a month and got a different answer each time I talked to someone. The US Department of Education and Fed Loan servicing are in the same building or on the same street and they do not REPEAT do not communicate with each other granted they have the same address? Those folks are a pain! Once you get this taken care of you can have your credit repaired in no time like a year you can go from fair to good credit. If you have credit cards or whatever make sure your balance is never over 1/3 of your limit and that will help your credit out too. Credit is essentially is showing that you can pay off debt over time. Getting debt and paying it right off doesn't help your credit. It has to be over time. GOOD LUCK GIRL!

    • @TheNailCakery
      @TheNailCakery 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      K Brown Sugar M, I agree to a certain extent. That's good for smaller things like everyday wants/needs. But when it comes to making big purchases like a house, unless you are a millionaire or have it like that, you will need a loan. And no bank will give you a loan (with a good interest rate) without a good credit history. So good credit a necessity in our society.

      If you have loans in default you need to call your servicer IMMEDIATELY! If you do not know who your servicers are you need to start by going to www.nslds.ed.gov it will give you a complete listing of all of your federal loan..If you work in public service, teaching in a title I, paramedic, med tech, teach on a reservation, police office, you are eligible to get your loans cancelled especially if you have a Federal Perkins Loan ... Consolidation is also a HUGE help.. you're only paying one lender.. If you are at a collection agency, you can do a rehab program which will ultimately clean up your credit BUT YOU MUST PAY 9 CONSECUTIVE PAYMENTS ON TIME EVERY MONTH.. you cannot miss a payment on this agreement or it is null and void.. STUDENT ACCOUNT DEBTS are NOT loans..remember that .. Loans are just that

      No they're not. They just add the # of years/interest you pay on. You're better off calling them, telling them what the deal is, and ask them to enroll you on income-based repayment program or loan consolidation. For the income-based repayment program, they adjust the monthly payment based on your income (you have to show proof of how much you get paid I believe every year or 3 years), which keeps you and your credit on a positive path. Once you are able to have a steady-income stream (either better paying job or 2nd job), they will return it back to the original payment amount (they won't do that until your current program ends and u have to reapply). And you should ALMOST PAY MORE than the minimum.
      Also, always check your loan statements and details ppwork. Some of these lenders and universities try to be slick and charge you payments BEFORE the 6-month grace period after graduation. I learned the hard way.

    I had bad credit but it wasn't from student loans. It was all from them damn credit cards. Being young, dumb and plain stupid. I finally decided to get my credit together last year and my credit went from a 580 to a 720. Still working to get it to at least a 780. I settled with almost all my credit cards and paid what I needed to pay off. Also the law gives the consumer the right to dispute any excessive charges on your credit report. Once the debt is settled you have to make sure the collectors agree to take it off your credit report. Once they do your credit score goes up.

    OMG I am dealing with the same situation. All my life it was "education is the key to a great life." So took that and ran with it. Got into my first choice school; albeit played around for a couple of years (immature mentality) but one day this little person showed up on my door step and was looking for me to provide at least the next 18yrs. So I had to get myself together. Worked a full time job, commuted 1hr 30mins 5 days a week as a full time student and graduated with a baby. Sallie Mae wanted her money 6mos and a day after graduation and never missed a beat calling looking for it. A couple of years later she turned into Navient. If they had a time machine where I could take it all back I would be the first with the golden ticket. They decided that I could pay a car note every month even though I am a social worker for the state making the minimum with no raise, bonus, Christmas turkey nothing in the near future. My loans are in default even though I have begged and pleaded with them to put me on a payment plan just for a couple of months and then I can pay more than what they're asking for. They told me "no". So at this point I send them a payment (not as much as they want, but something), answer when they call, the customer service people all feel sorry but can't do anything until their bosses decide and I've just given it to God. I am so happy somebody said something cause you start to feel alone

  • @mskatrina3000
    @mskatrina3000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    5 years ago, Sallie finally caught up with my ass too and started garnishing my wages from my job!!!! It put me in such a bind that I had to give up my car (the only other thing than my rent that was ridiculously high as giraffe ass)...luckily, I was familiar with public transportation so I started catching the bus and train to and from work, grocery store, etc...I spent the next 3 years paying off almost $30,000 in student loan debt off. The result: I've been debt free for 2 years and have gotten so used to the buses and trains that I still haven't wanted to get a car just yet...so now all that money I was spending on Loans and Car Payments is being built in my savings and checking accounts. Dineva, you said one powerful thing: CASH IS KING!!! I don't fuck with credit anymore. If you have to use credit that means you don't have the cash!. I don't care if you spend 10 years saving cash to buy your house outright...don't use credit!!! In the end, all these businesses want cash.

    I never had student loans, I joined the army, I used by GI Bill to pay for college, but the messed up part when I went to finance and inquire about how to start it the lady gave a FAFSA application I looked at it and said "No, I don't want a loan I want to use my GI Bill?" She said "Oh well, you know you can get both so you can have more money." I looked at that lady like she was crazy. She was encouraging me to apply for loans I didn't need nor want. But in my mind I kept thinking LOAN, LOAN you have to pay this back, and I took that application and threw it in the trash and headed straight to the Department of Veterans Affairs and asked them how do I apply for the GI Bill. But the point of my story is choices make the right choice for you and not what the lady at student aid tells you what to do.

    • @AnnaMaeBullock
      @AnnaMaeBullock 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrSpate6 The FAFSA qualifies you for everything including scholarships and free grants. I only used for the free federal & State grants. The FAFSA ask if you're interested in loans or college jobs & I always checked "No". I only wanted the no-strings freebies.
      My fin. aid package included The Board of Governor's Grant which waives tuition; plus $5,500 per year for a community college. I rented textbooks for $20 a semester. And purchased a one-time $20 bus pass that was good for the entire spring & Summer semesters, as well a $20 parking pass for the semester. I spent the rest, about $700 mo on rent.
