    The people who were rejected either hadn’t yet met all 120 monthly payments or didn’t read the fine print on what type of loan you needed to consolidate into and what payment plan you needed to be into. When you took out the loans, the promissory note you signed guaranteed PSLF.

Man I am not sure what people are going to do with the long pause on student payment if they intended to apply for this public service forgiveness. probably have to pay upfront the equivalent worths of 3 unpaid years or pay for an additional 3 years before they qualify for this.

      There's going to be major, major pain. One of my kids is approaching $90K. I pay the interest on the unsubsidized loans and the Sallie Mae. Nearly $600/mo and he's not done yet. PSLF is legit now. It's been revamped and people are actually getting forgiveness which they weren't before. I used to be super against it and was planning to just pay my loans off once the COVID forbearance ends. I could pay off my $174k in loans today (the entire sum is sitting in my HYSA since I've been saving for 4 years for this), or I can work another 5 years and only pay $60k. I'm keeping that extra $115k, using it for a down payment on a house, maximizing my emergency fund, investing the rest, and setting myself up for a bright future. If it was only a few grand, I'd just pay them off and be done with it. But the hassle, to me, is 100% worth saving six figures.

    • @schapediddly
      @schapediddly หลายเดือนก่อน

      It wouldn't have been that big of a difference if you would have been throwing all that money at it when you earned it instead of stashing it away. You've been letting the interest inflate it for 6 years... Not to mention what happens if this changes? What happens if you get denied? 4 MORE years of interest added on.
      Another thing a lot of people really did not take advantage of was the pause of interest on student loans during COVID. If you continued to make payments during that time, EVERY CENT of it went towards the balance. A lot of people could have made a lot of progress during that time.

    Ughhhhhh. I wish people would STOP calling Dave about student loans. He’s clearly bias and it’s also clear he isn’t up to date on what is/was happening. This call occurred in June 2022- when the PSLF waiver was in effect (ended Oct 2022.) It was more or less the govt saying- yeahhhhh, we messed up on this program for years and made it difficult for anyone to apply and here’s the first step to making it better/more user friendly.
    I myself consulted a student loan CPA/accountant- NOT Dave Ramsey in Feb 2022 to ensure I was on the right track. It turns out I wasn’t. I had zero qualifying payments despite knowing I should at least have 5 years. What did I do? I jumped through the hoops did everything the CPA told me to do. It took patience but as of this month, I have 96 qualifying payments. I’m set for forgiveness in summer 2025. I am leaning in hard to the REPAYE/SAVE program, I’m clearing out my credit card debt, investing (grown my net worth $50k in the last year between investing plus debt elimination), redid my backyard which only added to the appraisal of my home. A $4k backyard project, tacked on an additional $12k to my home equity. What did I not do? Pay my student loans, leaned into the forebearance. When I do need to start paying my loans, I will gladly do so- knowing that I’m doing it in the most strategic way- have less than 2 years in doing so and am building my wealth. Summer of 2025 is set to be a season where my net worth changes drastically because of the strategy I’ve implemented. But what if I lose my job?😢 Um, I’ll get a new one. Like non profits are begging (for at least in my field social work) for hires and offering $5k sign on bonuses that you receive at your 6 month mark- which is gone in a snap.
    I get so riled up about this, specifically. I hope this couple didn’t take Dave’s advice. If they did, it’s not too late. They can call their servicer up and ask for a full refund of any payments they made during the forbearance period- and they’ll still get the PSLF count. Maybe if they had 50k or less in student loans- sure, knock it out in a year or two and sleep better at night. But $120k? They could instead pay off their house with that, max out their retirements, HSA, etc. And at forgiveness- student loans would be gone, and their house would be paid off along with having a healthy investment portfolio. As a taxpayer, they’re already going to get the tax bomb over the years to come? Why double pay as a borrower and a tax payer, when you don’t need to? It’s one of the few loopholes that low and middle class individuals and families have. Take it! Consult, come up with a strategy and execute.

    • @imojen83
      @imojen83 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couldn’t help myself- had to like my own comment😂. I wanted to add that- I’m a single, female who has no support from a partner or family. It’s just me. As mentioned, I’m a Social Worker, who just started making a slightly above average income. I’ve lived in a HCOL area but have managed to buy a house on my own (a lot of sacrifice, patience and strategy.) Besides just leaning into the obvious loophole of PSLF, I also strongly believe I manage my money much better than the government does- so I want to give them the least amount possible. That’s also another large piece for me. While the US govt has only grown their debt balance sheet, I’m consistently eliminating mine. I’m (along with everyone) alreay paying higher prices in groceries, gas, etc because of government choices- I’m not willing to give them more.

Think of all the people who wouldn't be able to care for you, your parents, your kids (doctors, nurses, researchers, teachers, social workers etc)! This video provided very misleading information. The PSLF was enacted in 2007 and successful borrowers who started in 2008 at the earliest, have only begun to request forgiveness by 2018. The stats are skewed. This is still a new program, so the "low success rate" you claim is intentionally trying to scare borrowers who want to work in meaningful careers that do not pay well. That is the whole point of the program. PSLF is not the same as asking private student loans to be forgiven! This program is very straightforward, if you work in gov't social services (or other PRE-APPROVED work) for 10 years, then your remaining balance is forgiven. That's after 120 payments. Why would I pay more than the minimum?

    In the past, that was true. Many of the people that applied for forgiveness did not pay attention to the rules for qualifying. The govt has made major changes regarding this and for a small period of time they allowed for those mistakes to be corrected. Millions of dollars have been forgiven in just the last year. If you are only a few year's away from forgiveness today you can save the money that you would put towards the loans for your savings such as 401k, HYS etc. If something were to happen at least you'd still have the amount you owe in the bank. It's just an option. If it's effecting your ability to buy a home or something then pay it off.

    Sounds odd, you know whether or not you qualify for the public service loan forgiveness program when you apply for it which is right away. Then every single year you have to prove who you work for and they give you a countdown of how many payments you have left. So it’s not like you’re applying at the end only to find out you didn’t qualify you have to be in the program when you start.

    Those are low numbers, but they make you fill out an application to get student loan forgiveness to do a renewal to count your numbers. I'm guessing that counts as turning someone down. It's a stupid feature of the program.
    But still, the numbers don't make much sense, unless people are filling out forms multiple times a year.
    There are probably a lot of applicants who don't fit the criteria. What are the stats for someone who works for an approved charity or government organization who are turned down?
    If the mortgage is 4% and the student loan is at 6% or 7%, mathematically, student loans make sense to pay off first.... but if offered the PSLF? There is also the fact that if you pay your house off, your children get it without the debt (except for the heavy debt of property taxes.) If you die and you haven't paid off your student loans, your children do not inherit the debt. Is there a way to financially calculate that difference? I suppose one could do that by looking at risks of death at different ages, actuary tables, etc.
    There is also the ethical issue of choosing to not pay off a student loan so as not to pass the debt on to family members, or even setting it at a lower priority and paying minimum payments.
    I think student loans forgiven from schools that go broke only work if you haven't finished your degree, right? Not everyone who went there on a loan, right?
