Tip: hook up a vacuum cleaner to a hydraulic fluid reservoir cap. Doesn't need to be a perfect seal - just enough to create negative pressure within reservoir. This way when you unscrew hoses (with vacuum cleaner running) the fluid will not drip beyond maybe a small fraction of an ounce initially. This solution works very well.
I love those old Briggs flatheads. Most of the opposed twins will idle that low because the flywheel is downright massive and generally keeps the inertia going. I really enjoy your videos!
Bought a 999x new in '98 which I believe was the last year they were made. Thing was a beast. All the weaknesses were parts designed by MTD. Front axle and steering was the weak spot as well as all the safety switches. Had a 22hp Kohler that sounded awesome at low idle. The Eaton hystat and tecumseh two speed rear end with the limited slip diff was really nice. Loved that thing and wish I still had it.
I don't think there's ever been a garden tractor made without horribly designed safety switches that need to be bypassed. I've looked for another one for years and seen a couple. Problem is every time they've been lawn mowing machines and completely wore out.
@@sixtyfiveford I mainly cut grass with mine and pushed snow. It was used hard, but I kept up on the maintenance and after 2 decades, I knew what needed to be replaced before it broke. Front plastic wheel bushing was the most commonly replaced part. I mowed several acres every 5 days during peak growing season at full speed.
I really thought I'd see some serious spraying of hydraulic all over the place its one of those jobs you keep putting off so many lines wow ! That thing runs so good I mean it idles right down nice !
Sweet little Property Tractor to have! Makes me miss my 1986 CRAFTSMAN GT6000 that I had to sell because I couldn't physically attach the accessories anymore. I always wanted to find a "Quick Attatch" Loader, but they were all too expensive... The best three pieces on my GT were the robust Roper633a Transaxle, the (personally rebuilt) Kohler Magnum 20, and the Electric Actuated Rear 3-point (used to be a Sleeve Hitch)!
I actually happened to get ahold of 2 GT6000's! Both with 18 hp engines, one with snow plow, other snow Blower, and mower decks. Certainly are strong, robust, and just all around simple to keep on working!
I had a John Deere 318 loader that I built with a pump off of a hydraulic tiller. That thing would lift anything, many times I thought I was going to snap that front axle. I installed crane weights off the back of the tractor, and when I would un install the loader, the tractor would tilt all the way till the rear weights touched the ground.
That is a nice tractor. I think it will last forever. Replacing all the hoses like you did was very reasonable. I laughed at Ginger wearing the bread mask lol.
I have a late 70's Kubota LT185 with the fire breathing 17.5 HP twin cylinder diesel. Such a perfect tractor for my needs. I have some hoses that should probably be replaced, and a few other leaks to address, too. Thanks for the guidance on where to get hoses and the basics of replacement.

I don't think they sold many at all as they were so expensive. With price modified for inflation, they were around $10,000 bare and I'm sure the loader added another $4,000-5,000.

I know a guy that did that with a pair of JD lawn tractors, he had an engine front and back and some really aggressive ATV tires, quite the little machine and it could climb trees.

Yeah, there are a few products that have UV inhibitors. 303 aerospace protectant/ kind of like armor all, is probably the most popular. I have used that on a few occasions even on the hoses of this. Problem is when you look it up it only lasts for 1-3 months. Which is still better than nothing.

Yeah, this is dex3 so same consistency. They sell hydraulic fluid in a ton of different viscosities. They list it with an ISO grade number. ATF is an ISO 32(approx 10 weight) but they sell Hydraulic fluid in ISO 32,46, 68 and 100(10w,20w,20w and 30w appox)
Ok, tell the truth - with the loader as far down as it'll go, holding up the front end, how much clearance between the loader arm and the filter bracket? ;) I always look forward to your videos, thanks for making them long enough to explain, but not going on and on forever.
I have before and was actually putting 303 on everything I had. However I did a lot of research to find out how long 303 UV protection actually lasts. Per them the best I see is it will hold up for about a month in sunlight before you need to do it again. At the cost and labor of 303 it's probably cheaper just to let the part dry out and replace it every 10-20 years. I still apply it occasionally though.
you're not wrong about custom hoses. I had 2 made at oreillys. they charge a bunch for the fittings. i paid around 150 for 2 hoses 18" long with oring face seal fittings
I also have an MTD Lawnflite and a kwikway loader. The loader is on a Sears Suburban which isn't running right now. How is your loader mounted to the tractor?
What about wrapping your hydraulic lines in that silicone tape that only sticks to itself? Probably not as cost effective for the amount of lines your doing but may be a good choice for a line you don’t want to remove.
I generally let either sawdust or kitty litter soak up as much as possible for a week or more. I'll step and grind it into the oil with my foot every time I walk by. This takes 90% out and generally that's where I leave it. However, once a year I'll use purple power and hand scrub it with a wire brush and then a pressure washer takes out everything.
Hey brother wouldn’t the hydraulic system work better if you got rid of some of those 90s fittings and just curve you hoses to compensate. It would heat less and cause less air in the system.
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼………………………………………….I use the “ real “ hydraulic line cover material. I slide the cover over a piece of metal pipe, after I mark the length I need with silver sharpe. I then cut it to length with a soldering iron. No fraying and since it is held open by the pipe, it doesn’t stick to itself. Not telling you how to do your job, just sharing how I do mine. 👍🏼

These are just fat people movers that want to fly low and make a ton of noise. I live 15 miles from the airport but they have decided to "buzz the tower" 30 miles before they land. I do have family that lives an hour away near an airforce base and those are deafening. They shake the entire inside of you home.

All i had to replace was the spark plug, new oil and the layered diaphram on top of the oblong tank under the plastic carb. Plus i washed the foam air filter and dryed it, then applied light oil to the foam filter. Next to nothing wrong, maybe the bore is a bit worn. I dont throw things away because they are past there peak. People waste so much :-(

True, it could. However you just need to keep the leading thread clean from tape and it's all pushed back as you thread it. That's good practice with any teflon tape job though as I see people wrap the front leading edge all the time.

I've been floored by the price every time I've went in to have a custom hose made.
Much easier hydraulic to work on than the spool I have to pull on the JD 644 tomorrow.

What size is the pump on the loader and how much fluid fits in the tank? I have just bought a white 1855 and I'm buliding my own loader.
Likely the smallest pump available (it doesn't say). Flow rate is not a priority with these. The capacity of the tank is 3-4 quarts.
You mentioned suction line and may have said no pressure?
But suction creates pressure in, collapsing the inlet hose
A tiny bit sure but not really in this case. The gravity of the fluid pushing down is probably equal to the suction force through the large hose.

Problem is you can't buy the fittings nor the bulk hose for the price you can buy a completed hose for. Most of these hoses were only $5-7each.

Yep. Each hose was around $5-7. I had to buy a fitting for each for most around $3-4. That's cheap compared to having hoses made at the shop.

Don't use teflon tape on hydraulics. Little speck breaks off and can plug pilot valve.
