  • Once the field of genetics was developed, our understanding of biology was completely transformed. How did this specifically impact the field of anthropology? From Mendel's laws to the Human Genome Project, let's learn about how our ever-expanding understanding of DNA elucidated the history of Homo sapiens and other hominid species.

It’s important to note that humans and chimps also share the same remnants of ancient viral infections in the same genomic location which they both inherited from their common ancestor, which is uninterpretable proof of common ancestry

You just know that at some point we're going to see someone in this comment section use the old line: "If humans evolved from apes, why are there still apes?"
Naturally, the people who will ask this question will no more understand the point of this video than they understand the hypothesis of abiogenesis or the notion that, in fact, space is not fake.
This is a great series, Prof Dave. I look forward to their uploads with anticipation.

Both my parents are black. My mom, her parents, and my grandpa's father all, like me, have pale white skin. My dad's black (Ice cubes complexion). I have type 4 hair, bell pepper nose, thick lips, but flat booty, my skin in pale and freckled, and i have green eyes. Everyone's black, married black, etc. My husband's 1st generation Italian American. Our son came out bronzed, but with light brown hair (no one has that) and daughter came out with curly sue almost black hair, crystal bluec eyes, and paper white. Genetics are so finicky!

@SweetMamaG - A few years back, _National Geographic Magazine_ published their "Race" issue. They had a photograph on the cover of twin girls, one of whom looked pale European and one who looked like she was of African descent. If you can find that issue, it is fascinating.
(Hint: There is not such thing as "race". We are all Sapiens with minor superficial variations.)

It's really amazing how morphological and anatomical studies, converge with genetic comparisons on the same phylogenetic, behavioural, social and psychological patterns, in the family of the great Apes, in a way that agrees with the patterns found in the fossil record. The fact that truth can be strengthened by looking at it from different scientific fields of research is truly amazing !!

@hilurmohammed2023 - There's a whole specialty of people who reconstruct facial features from skeletons. You see this all the time in police investigations when unidentified skeletal remains are found.
      -----------
The people who do this work combine science with art. If a skeleton has any DNA left, some things, like the color of skin, hair, and eyes can be determined. For species without available DNA, the coloring is arrived at as logically as possible.
      -----------
Bones have marks where muscles were attached - the artists can evaluate what they would look like and what the skin would look like that overlays them and the bones. Skin thickness in modern Sapiens is well known. It can be logically arrived at for other species. Stance and posture can be determined by physical experiments with the fossils and the angles and strides the bones would make in life.
      ------------
Since there are varying depictions of the same species by reconstruction artists, you can see that there are various interpretations. As I said, it's an art blended with science. There are videos on TH-cam that show reconstructionists at work. Look for some. It is truly fascinating.
