You're right Francis, I can feel the excitement and creativity flowing as you we're recording this. Screw the TH-cam algorithm, make what you love, live within your means, hang around the people you love. You'll be happy overall, that's what I'm realizing myself.
You are treating the situation in a less than efficient manner. And stressing out about it too much. Take it from someone who grew up living in a bus needing to find a place to park and sleep every night... this is how you go about finding a place. 1. Do not cruise around residential neighborhoods looking for a dark place to park. This looks suspicious and draws attention. 2. Find a well lit parking lot at 24 hour store, like a Walmart, etc. 3. Walk into the Walmart and ask the manager if it is OK with them if you park overnight in the corner of the lot? Tell them you will be happy to pick up/clean part of the lot, you will not be a nuisance, and will be gone by a certain time of the day. 9 times out of 10 they will be cool about it, and if you are rousted by the police, you can inform them that you have permission. 4. Act like you belong somewhere. If you are confident, you will be less likely to be questioned. In the case of a Tesla, you have an immense advantage over sleeping in a regular beat up car, or a bus/camper... it is a freaking Tesla. No one associates a Tesla with shady people, or the homeless... even in the Bay Area. In your case, same rules apply as above, but with added perks. 1. You can park at a slow charge destination charger, and trickle charge overnight and claim that you are charging and taking a nap. 2. If you park overnight at places like CVS etc that have 120V outlets on the light posts, you can charge at 4 mph while you sleep, or a bit more at a charge point station. 3. You can park at many superchargers overnight, and no one cares if you are not on the supercharger. Again, no one looks twice at a Tesla parked anywhere but a ghetto. Basically, always ask permission, and you will be fine.
I tried this for the first time and I liked it! I think I used up about 30 miles in my model 3 to keep the climate on and it must have been about 40 F (5 C) outside over night. I used some window shades like the ones mentioned in this video, which I got on amazon and I just put down a very thick down comforter and slept on that with a sleeping bag. That was a little bit too cold but fixed the problem in the middle of the night by blowing up one of those thin inflatable therm-a-rest camping sleeping mats. I had a regular pillow and a tempur-pedic and I actually slept pretty well. I read that you can sleep in a park-and-ride lot overnight so that's what I found. Check your state regulations. You can also read up on camping out in a service station based on my research and I might try something like that next time. This was a really cool and fun experience and it is exciting to not shell out $150 to $250 bucks per night; If someone offers to pay you that much money to sleep in a Tesla for a night and the answer is yes, then YES, you should try this. I love my Tesla so much more now. If you have old weak man bladders like I do, you might want to think ahead of time about what you feel comfortable doing :-) Next time I'm going to buy some extra shades to also block out the light from the top two panes of glass.

Hey Francis. I love the idea of sleeping in your car. My fiance and I slept in the back of a jetta wagon on our vacation for one night. We have dark window tint on the back window (5% film) and ligter tint on the front two windows (20% film) . My tint job cost less than $300. With the dark windows and a sun screen in the windshield no one could see in at all. We have the weathertech window visors. we left those cracked to let in fresh air. The back of the wagon had plenty of space for the two of us to lay and sit up. We had a foam matrass topper to lay on in the back. Quite cozy! If I was a single man I could honestly sleep there every night. Walmart lets us sleep in the parking lot. No issues at all. I like the window tint much better than the window covering. With california you are allowed to have as dark tint as you want on the back half of your car, and like you said you can see out of the tint just fine.
I did stealth camping several times with my wife. It does take some time to drive around and scout for that perfect spot. I parked once at a busy intersection, work up so many times because of cars speeding by in the middle of the night. Also, having a jackery is nice. Those can charge your laptop.
You should make a video on how to travel overseas for newbies, a complete rundown for people who don't know how to travel like in Japan. Where to shop for tickets, what happens in the airport, how much cash to bring, where to exchange money, etc. It can be part of a series. I am sure you will enjoy making it, and people will like to watch.
for where to sleep at night, find a gated apartment homes, look up the available vacant units so you get an idea of how the addresses work. for example, i work as a security guard at a gated apartments, literally anyone can come to the gatehouse and say their here to pick up their friend at 30-128, 30 being the building number and 128 being the unit number, and we open the gate up, you can park at the end of the parking garages and sleep or park outside on the street. either way, you park in a safe place
i've slept in my rav4 before while on long road trips - quiet office parking lots away from busy streets with other vehicles already parked, apartment complexes off the main roads with limited traffic, and side parking at walmart in slower areas work pretty well. sometimes i'll camp in the parking lot of a motel if there are already a lot of vehicles so yours won't stand out - motels inside a city may require some kind of note/tag. i'll sleep at a truck stop if necessary, but they tend to be noisy and very bright. it works best to already have window tinting. i use a klymit blow up sleeping pad and the alvantor popup privacy tent, which i hang with bungee cords. the tent helps to cut out a lot of distracting light and looks like total blackness, especially with some tinting already installed
This is my new favorite TH-cam video. I came here to learn how to sleep in my M3 and learned some of the most valuable self defense tactics I’ve ever seen
Place the small, harder pillow between your knees when you sleep on your side. Changes the angle of how your hip bone joint and thigh bones rest. You'll like it!
If you learn the skill of sleeping 2 hours at a time in the driver seat, you can just drive, then park at charging place, sleep there a couple of hours, then keep going. I did 24 hours trip denver to sf that way, sleeping for 3 hours in salt lake rest area.
My wife and I have done quite a bit of camping in our model 3. State campgrounds are great places to camp- for $30-40 you also can get a full charge overnight. I made a full set of reflectix screens. Also FYI, the screen clean goes away after a while, but the latest update shuts off the campfire video after a while on its own.
Oh, I remember the first time you did this in your old car, and I was thinking about how much better it would be for you in a Tesla. I only just started watching, so this should be interesting.
Just to add to the video, truck stops are usually a safe choice as well! Some are better than others though so use discretion when selecting one to sleep at.
First video I watched where someone actually realized the importance of protecting themselves! Respect the knife in the door, never know what can happen but better to be prepared.
Well thought out! As for the slight angle, that's ok and even desirable. Look up Inclined Bed Therapy, where you raise the head of the bed a few degrees, about 6". It is very health promoting, and comfortable, like you are resting on the slope of a beach.
We have 24 hour fitness clubs where you can use water fountain, shower, bathroom, locker and of course gym equipment. It’s perfect if you want to sleep in the car but need access to water. The membership used to be really cheap, but the price went up significantly after the pandemic.
Has a 70 grand car, doesn't want to pay for sleeping. Sounds like me. For example I don't think I've paid 5 times for parking in my whole life. It's not like I can't walk for 10 minutes.
No amount of money can completely fix boredom. Sometimes you need an adventure. Going somewhere you haven't been can be healthy when you feel stifled. The trip needn't be extravagant. You can still save money.
Stealth sleeping is fun, also if you don't want to sleep in a residential neighborhood but want to stealth sleep try truck stops. It might seem janky but the protection there is high due to drivers not wanting bad guys around the trucks. Down side is the noise levels around these areas.
i'm 6'6 and i fit in the back pretty well. there was a gap between the folded rear seats and the front seats that had to be pushed all the way up, so if i can get something to place in that gap then i'd be able to fit just fine. this was when i was test driving one, i can't afford a tesla unfortunately lol
I don’t want to use my battery at all while I’m sleeping. Moreover, I know that Teslas automatically close all its windows when they are locked. Hence this question is for a Tesla Model Y. Is it possible to leave some of the windows say an inch down while my car is locked because I like to sleep in my car with the windows one inch or half an inch down because I actually enjoy sleeping in a somewhat cool environment and I breathe much better too. I simply do not want to use my AC or fan at all while I’m sleeping in my car. If this is possible (leaving the windows a little bit open while my car is locked), can you please give me the control recipe for that?
I think I'd get some Reflectix and make custom window shades for most of the windows, otherwise, street lights and parking lots lights would be too bright. WeatherTech makes some full car sunshades but not for the Tesla yet.
The only thing missing from this video is the actual experience sleeping in your Tesla and waking up in the “secluded” neighborhood. Its a lot different when you have to do it instead of just talking about it. Maybe do a Part 2 👍
@@itsjohnnyho Ah, thanks; I forgot what those tiny hotels were called. You have started a nice channel - very level-headed advice and a great camera presence; I love your accent! Subscribed :-)
I love being able to use my Hotel Prius. When I need a nap, I crawl in the back and snooze with the dog. So comfy! But I hope some day I will buy a used Tesla...
'Look as crazy as possible' - yes sound advice. Have that knife in the side compartment (or anywhere) in Britain and you might get six years free accommodation 'at her Majesty's pleasure'. Nice video - thanks.
Maybe try Scandinavia (or Europe) instead, where you can sleep at most places in your car. Although you have to leave the knife at home since that's illegal.
Great tip on leveling out the bed. I slept in my M3 last night for the first time and was pretty uncomfortable since my body was being bent and I was sleeping on an incline. I knew about this from watching another video but didn't think I'd be that affected by it that much. Boy was I wrong. I ended up placing something at the end of my single person blow-up mattress to help a little bit, but leveling out with foam would have definitely helped. My guess is that you'd want several foam pads (which I think is what you have going on in your video) so that you can adjust accordingly based upon the pitch your car is parked. What inch foam are you using and where did you get it? It looks like packing foam, not bed memory foam, so I'm guessing (hoping) it's cheaper. The other great tip you had that I could have used last night was turning on screen cleaning mode...I never knew which screen was going to show after returning to my car (after using the bathroom). Sometimes the campfire video would show, sometimes the settings screen would show up, it seemed pretty inconsistent and annoying (would have to wait what seemed like 5-10 minutes for the screen to go to sleep). I didn't know how to black out the screen but now I do. Thank you. I also wish the Tesla app could communicate via bluetooth for when LTE coverage isn't a thing...like what I experienced camping in a state park last night. Having to climb over and stretch to hit the screen for every adjustment was pretty annoying. Maybe I need to buy a wooden dowel and capacitive rubber to attach at the end for now.
The foam is in multiple 3/4" layers I got from packaging. It's medium density so it wont squash easily. And the multiple pieces is to adjust for the slant of the seats. It's smallest at the bottom, then next layer is about 4 inches longer. Then next layer is another 4 inches longer. Incline is not taken into account assume you can just find a flat area to park.
@@BeatTheBush awesome, thanks for the reply and happy (and safe) travels! p.s. for those wondering about showering, I suppose you could get a $20/mo planet fitness "black card" membership as they have a lot of locations. Not sure what BeatTheBush recommends though 😁
Fox Pepper Spray is good to carry around for protection. Simple to operate. Just put a finger underneath the safety top, pressed down and get bad guys running and crying for mercy! lol. I think Walmart parking lots (especially Walmart stores that open 24 hours in a nice neighborhood) are safer plus can use their restrooms at any time.
If you want to sleep in the car on a long road trip to save money, where do you store your bagage while your bagage compartment is serving as a bedroom ?
I’d only sleep in Tesla if there were not Airbnb reservations available but I want to know how you’d use the air conditioning at night or how I’d record or mix videos in the middle of a project.
I’ve car camped before back in the 1980s my mom cracked the windows she made sure we were dressed warm plenty of blankets in cooler weather warmer we would have all the windows open but not to much
Would be worried about the battery dying and having to jump start the car if the fan was on. I guess since a Tesla is an electric car you could plug in your car at a camp site like a camper. That actually is a good feature to have on a car for camping. Should be in more cars. Your set up is better than most tents I guess.
Camp mode will stop keeping the temperature if it drops below 20% charge or something like that. Will need enough charge to get to next charging station the next morning if not next to a plug.
I Sleep in a my mini Van down by the river now. I took you're advise to Buy Gold a few months ago, Now Im broke and have to live in my Van. Any more smart ideas
I always sleep in my car when traveling without my wife and you hit it right on the head about places to go to sleep and things to look out for. I have a subcompact (a Spark) but if it saves a few buck and it works for me. I find some apartments have large visitors parking areas and small town Walmarts are usually okay, the bonus there is in the morning you can go into the Walmart and get breakfast and the plus there is after 6 am they clearance the about to expire foods. Also it's the best time to check for other clearances, I have bought jeans for 3 and 5 dollars and 5 years ago I got shoes for $3.00 so I bought 7 or 8 pairs don't remember but I still have shoes. When at Walmart park far away from the building and if your not going in as soon as you wake up get out of there and if your going in change your parking place. I agree I like the idea of using pieces of foam to level out the bed. Once again thank you for a great video.
Cool camping technique but your knife skills are far from scary. It would look way more terrifying if you were calm and looked like you knew what you were doing in a knife fight.
This is exactly the content I’ve been searching for! I’m road-tripping soon in my M3. I have the TESMAT & privacy screen and was thinking I could just stay in mid-range hotel parking lots since they are not patrolled. I’m traveling solo and was thinking Walmart/Pilot/Cracker Barrel lots would be less secure. I had also thought about nice residential neighborhoods. Now .. about the 🔪. Any branding links? 😝
Do you think that sleeping in my model 3 might be putting my health at risk? I removed the back seat bench. Now that I've seen that orange high voltage connector right under the seat, I'm second guessing putting down the backseats and sleeping in the car usually right on top of that high voltage connector. I'm curious to hear what you guys think about it. I appreciate your comments. Thanks
I don't get why camping is so strict in the US. In Norway you can almost camp wherever, and even if it's not allowed, no one is gonna bother ask you to leave anyway.
Umm. Norway, has how many people? 5.5 million population. And the size of the country, density is 14.3/km squared? US population is 330 million population. Density is 33.6/km squared We have 2.5 times more people than Noreay per space. And this is USA averaging. If we only focus on metropolitan cities, big cities, density is lot higher. So clearly, they have to regulate it. Not only that, this country has lot of homeless issues. Lot of homeless and drug addicts ruin the neoghborhood.

I love being able to use my Hotel Prius. When I need a nap, I crawl in the back and snooze with the dog. So comfy!
But I hope some day I will buy a used Tesla...
Lol
Imagine a Tesla owner showing you how to save $70 airbnb. Love your channel 👍 I remember the one you made for your BMW and the electric fan 😂
'Look as crazy as possible' - yes sound advice. Have that knife in the side compartment (or anywhere) in Britain and you might get six years free accommodation 'at her Majesty's pleasure'. Nice video - thanks.
Like this ===> O_o
Thats why i always keep a hammer in the car in the uk 🤣 was just putting a shelf up at me nans the other day 🤷♂️
Recent thumbnails are wild. Love it.
I have to rethink early retirement after watching this video...
BTB has been invaluable to me, my goal also used to be early retirement
also keep some high illumination LED flashlights around
Had to thumbs up after the crazy knife part. Bravo
Maybe try Scandinavia (or Europe) instead, where you can sleep at most places in your car. Although you have to leave the knife at home since that's illegal.
Crazy knife guy trespassing! Lol
Don't mess with me! Let me sleep!
Great video, love the attention to detail.
Thank you! Cheers!
You might want to try a Wal-Mart parking lot, they can be decent. Plus they have bathrooms and you can grab food if you want.
Hahaha the knife part in this video. Lols. Love the new content.
Great video, thank you, man. Liked and subscribed
imagine driving by and seeing him waving that knife around
murderous bad guy driving by: "yikes, that guy is crazy, I better keep driving"
I would open the window a little bit just in case you run out of battery or the car air ventilation get broken
No because if temp difference too great, it will lose heat or ac. Also a security issue.
Fox Pepper Spray is good to carry around for protection. Simple to operate. Just put a finger underneath the safety top, pressed down and get bad guys running and crying for mercy! lol. I think Walmart parking lots (especially Walmart stores that open 24 hours in a nice neighborhood) are safer plus can use their restrooms at any time.
bear spray would serve dual purpose and useful for camping also
If you want to sleep in the car on a long road trip to save money, where do you store your bagage while your bagage compartment is serving as a bedroom ?
I’d only sleep in Tesla if there were not Airbnb reservations available but I want to know how you’d use the air conditioning at night or how I’d record or mix videos in the middle of a project.
In a Tesla, you can use camp mode and the temp will be regulated. 2nd question isn't clear.
I’ve car camped before back in the 1980s my mom cracked the windows she made sure we were dressed warm plenty of blankets in cooler weather warmer we would have all the windows open but not to much
We didn’t keep the car on
Would be worried about the battery dying and having to jump start the car if the fan was on.
Bush beater hunny are you a stealthy ninja
BTB, I don't think it's the sleeping in the car part people may be upset with - it's the waving of a knife by a crazy looking guy with a camera 🤣🤣
Very nice setup. My only issue would be night time toilet
Maybe a bottle if it's too cold outside. Or try not to go to the toilet by not drinking too much water right before bed.
I told you, you are intriguing
Those tips are CRITICAL to sleeping well in a car. =D
That knife scene?? I’m crying🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
XD XD
I love the new thumbnails.
Thank you!
ME: Hey! Emails are pretty calm today. Did you go camping?
BTB: [this video]
XD XD
Legend has it, BTB drove around for 3 hours found the best spot to stealth camp inside his garage
Exactly all the thoughts I go through lol. This was fun
This video will be helpful when I buy a Tesla and can't afford rent anymore
🤣🤣
Cool camping technique but your knife skills are far from scary. It would look way more terrifying if you were calm and looked like you knew what you were doing in a knife fight.
legend
The Model Y makes for a comfy camper, even for someone who is 6'2'' like myself.
Part 2 video after 3 years experience? TY
Hell of a video
Does the Tesla have good range ?
I love this guy 😂
10:41 "go and do a hit and run" 😂😂😂 is this why beat the bush needs his knife🤔🤔🤔
That veil thing would be awesome with magnets sewn in it.
Your thumbnails always kill me 😂 *_*adds to watch later_*
LOL. No Tesla in the thumbnail but it's about Tesla Car Camping. No car even, just my crazy face.
What type of mattress you have ?
5:15 The front passenger seat in my 2011 Nissan Rogue folds down so I can haul more. Wish more SUV's would do this.
This guy is actually a G
This is exactly the content I’ve been searching for! I’m road-tripping soon in my M3. I have the TESMAT & privacy screen and was thinking I could just stay in mid-range hotel parking lots since they are not patrolled. I’m traveling solo and was thinking Walmart/Pilot/Cracker Barrel lots would be less secure. I had also thought about nice residential neighborhoods. Now .. about the 🔪. Any branding links? 😝
Going back on that I now think mace would work best better than knives.
Not sure if I have the elevation foam in this video but you need this in the trunk area to make it completely flat for better sleep.
I don’t sleep in cars but I think a street with mixed use apartments and houses is a good choice..
Thanks
Yes, there are a lot of crazy jerks around in the Bay area that love to mess with Tesla, unfortunately.
Density is 33.6/km squared
We have 2.5 times more people than Noreay per space. And this is USA averaging. If we only focus on metropolitan cities, big cities, density is lot higher. So clearly, they have to regulate it. Not only that, this country has lot of homeless issues. Lot of homeless and drug addicts ruin the neoghborhood.
