    Hello friends!
    Today, I'm so excited to be sharing my SECOND progress check-in on my latest comparison series. Over the past couple months, I’ve been working on and comparing the two different rendering styles that Jaded Gem Shop now offers. The first style is the "Classic/Hybrid" style, which has more computer-charting and tends to be more confetti-heavy and softer in how it turns out. The second style is the "Pixel/Hand-Charted" style, which has been done by hand, in-house, and will have more color blocking and a cleaner, crisper rendering.
    I've been working on "A Mermaid's Bath" by Toshia San for this comparison. Both have square drills, and while one is slightly smaller than the other, I think these kits will still illustrate the differences in the rendering pretty well! I’m excited to hear your thoughts on today’s update.
    I'll have some additional reviews and unboxings for you to take a look at below, if you're curious to see more, but keep in mind that up until this series, all kits that have been unboxed or completed have the original hybrid charting style to them.

    I definitely like the pixel charted version better because the image is a lot clearer, and there isn't a bunch of unnecessary confetti. 😊

    I prefer the pixel chart in almost every way, except the window! I love how well the softness of the hybrid charted one works with lighting, and how it really looks like sunlight shining through!

    Thank you so much for doing this comparison! My personal preference is for the hybrid charted version, even with the extreme confetti. I think the pixel-charted version has more of a cartoon style and the hybrid-charted has more of an art style.

      My thoughts exactly! It's crazy how much my opinion changed. When she first introduced this comparison project I was like "duh obviously the pixel charted is going to look so much better because of how much clearer it looks". But now I'm definitely leaning towards the hybrid more because of the reasons you just mentioned with the pixel charted looks more cartoon-ish and the hybrid looks more like a soft artwork👌

    Thanks for showing off the strengths of both styles! I’ve always loved the way JGS kits look completed so the pixel charting feels like she’s making something great even better. I’m leaning more towards the pixel charted one simply because of how much easier it seems to be to work on it - lots of confetti is a commitment I struggle to keep sometimes lol I agree 100% that some artists’ work might be better hybrid charted, so I’m glad she’s going to continue charting in both styles

    When you initially showed the empty canvases I was sure it would be a landslide that I'd like the pixel charted version but seeing them done, I'm actually 50/50. I think there's beauty in both. One is more crisp and clean and the other is more soft and dreamy.

    I really do prefer the pixel charted version. I’m glad Jade has added this to her shop. I hope to see more images in the pixel charted version. I think the artwork comes out cleaner and looks nicer. If you are open to another comparison project I’d love to see one where the canvases are of the same size. Don’t apologize so much. We all are open to our own opinions doesn’t mean one is right or wrong.

    I’m loving the pixel charted version of this piece….BUT….i really like the flowers at the top on the wallpaper on either side of the curtains better on the hybrid version. Not the flowers in the vase, but the flowers at the very top. I know I’m strange! 😂😂💕💕Thanks so much for this comparison! I am really enjoying seeing the similarities and differences!

    Thanks so much for this, Katie. I think it would be VERY interesting to see a different art style, i.e. an old masters (similar to William Waterhouse) in this type of comparison. I think there would be very different opinions about which style is preferred in that type of art.

    This is fascinating. Like you, there are aspects of each that I like. One request, can you add the original artwork as a third part of the comparison? So many times the rendering doesn't actually reflect the art, especially when it comes to the colors on the canvas. Thanks

  • @exlibris_Heather
    @exlibris_Heather 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I still like the pixel version better, but I prefer the hybrid chart features: the colours in the features on the window, the softness of the candles and candlesticks, the colour and shape of the taps and shower head. I love the roses in the pixel version, but I think the wall paper would have been better without the extra shine. 😻🌼 Thanks again for the comparison series - it is really interesting and informative. I love the artwork too. Regards. 🌸💝

  • @jenniferzyren7521
    @jenniferzyren7521 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Thanks for the comparison! You mentioned that the bottle color is different in the hybrid- that looks to be because the light is yellower in that one so it's affecting all the colors in the piece. The pixel charted one, the light is less yellow (hence the blue window) so the color will be different. It's also why the flowers in the hybrid look 'muddier' up close- the "greens" aren't true greens, or even green, whereas they've been changed to a truer green color for the pixel charted. So it looks like the hybrid is truer to the color and texture rendering in the original piece while the pixel charting changes the color rendering to register better with the eyes. I'm not sure which I would like better with this one to be honest- I'm loving the lighting and the texture on the computer charting so much. But the hand charting is super cute too.

    Wow, you're almost finished! 🤗 I definitely agree as regards the window. The hybrid version looks warmer and looks more like sunshine coming through than the blues of the pixel charted version. Plus, the handheld shower looks more recognisable in the hybrid, but blends in more with the window in the pixel charted version. I can't wait for the big reveal! I, too, would have saved that section for last 😊

    I'm gravitating toward the pixel charted version but when you started the project a thought it would be more of a clear winner for me and if they were the same size i don't know if I would be able to have a clear preference to the finished picture - but I do get tired out with too much confetti 😅
    Love to follow this project and really looking forward to the final reveal and future comparison projects 🤩

    I think one rendering will look better based on the actual artsyle of the artist. Like for some more soft and "watercolor-y" artstyles I'd like the rendering on the right because it makes everything softer. While the rendering on the left makes everything more defined and color-blocky. The rendering on the left, for example, would look absolutely amazing with Miss Holly and Madie Arts styles! While I would like the rendering on the right for artworks from someone like Yuumei Art.
    (idk if it makes any sense, English is not my first language lol)

    I thought there was no way I’d like the hybrid but as it comes along I can definitely see why some prefer the softer, more artistic glow of the one on the right. I prefer the pixel charted but that’s only because I enjoy the clarity and clean lines over tons of confetti but both are beautiful in their own way!

    Thanks for taking the time to do two canvases. I don’t know if I could’ve done that. I think overall I like the hand charted, however, I like the softness of the window in the hybrid. Currently, I’m working on a canvas that my daughter ordered as a custom from a generic company (she knows nothing about diamond painting) I’m doing it because she picked it out. It is so confetti heavy that I wish I could throw it out the window. It has a ridiculous amount of confetti, 48 colors in a 2 inch square🙄😡🤬. I would lean toward hand charted because of this.

    I think you did a good job of putting both rendering styles in a positive light. My personal preference would be the pixel charted version only because I appreciate the more crisp detail afforded to the pixel charted version. I can, however, appreciate parts of the hybrid version such as the windows and curtains. I don't know if I could afford a pixel version but I do like them.

  • @kaybailey4435
    @kaybailey4435 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I like both but do like parts of each better. I agree about the details in the pixel charted. The light coming through window that makes the image as its where a light source is coming. I would probably pick the pixel charted over hybrid because I like a mix with good areas of multiplacing. This is because I finished a high confetti image. I am loving this comparison you are doing.

    It’s an interesting look into how others look at this artwork. Thank you for it! I completely understand why it feels like the pixel charted is easier to work on, especially when zoomed in close. However, my first instinct looking at the top half was that I vastly preferred the roses, bottles, and faucet fixture on the hybrid/traditional charting. I recognize how they can be off putting when looking at them close up (working distance) but when finished and looking at the piece from viewing distance they look more realistic and not as much coloring book style. I think the direction of where the light is coming from sometimes gets lost in pixel charting that’s there in really quality artwork/softer renderings. Perhaps I would prefer the pixel charted on more cartoony or bubbly style artwork though. ❤

    I like both for different reasons, but I am leaning towards the hybrid charted as i love the vintage look to it. It has got a lovely, soft, almost oil painted feel, it would blend well hanging on a wall full of old pictures.
    The pixel charted one is so crisp and clear and looks more modern. It will appeal more to those with a clean modern asthetic. I also feel it would be better for those with sight difficulties as it is easier to make out the details to enjoy them.
    They also appeal to different skill levels and preferences. The pixle is better for beginners and those who enjoy more colour blocking. Also those who like the projects to gotl a bit faster and want to relax more intk the project. The hybird charting is more for those a bit more advanced/enjoy confetti, or like a bit of a challenge. It can still be relaxing, but also provide a tad more stimulation to the doing them.
    Just in my own life, i would do the hybid charted for myself, but kf it was a present for, say, my MIL, i would do the pixel as that's more her style and the one she would display and enjoy.
    This is similar to the spirit of flight comparison, as there is such a stark difference because each style focuses on different aspects of the painting, creating a different clarity in each piece.
    There are points to be made for both, and many may wish an in-between version.

    Hi Katie, I’m still leaning towards the hybrid. But I think it depends on the artist and original art. I’d like to see these side by side at an actual viewing distance, such as 8’ or 10’ away. I looked at a pixel charted Cherriuki and I don’t care for the effect. Thank you for sharing.

    Maybe there's a lack of technical knowledge in the DP community but both styles are computer generated. There's this misconception that hand charted = manual labor thus superior when it's not really the case as the bulk of the work is done in a software.
    The difference lies in the number of colors you want the software to use. It's easily done in Photoshop (called color indexing) and any minor cleanup can then also be easily done in Illustrator afterwards. The DPs with more confetti (and usually nonsense confetti) is merely a result of not indexing the colors of the original artwork far enough.
    You'll see what I mean when you watch the process in these video (are very basic image editing technques).
    Of course there are many ways to achieve the same effects but bottom line is, it's not really a hand charted vs computer charted argument bc both are computer charted. The only time when you can really say something is hand charted is when someone does an artwork ftom scratch in pixel art style. It's like adding sugar to coffee, you can add more sugar to make it less bitter, aka indexing colors further to have fewer confetti.
