Rendering Comparison #1 - Jaded Gem Shop’s Pixel & Hybrid Charting of “A Mermaid’s Bath”

Hello friends!
Today, I'm so excited to be sharing my first progress check-in on my latest comparison series. The past few weeks, I’ve been working on and comparing the two different rendering styles that Jaded Gem Shop now offers! The first style is the "Classic/Hybrid" style, which has more computer-charting and tends to be more confetti-heavy and softer in render. The second style is the "Pixel/Hand-Charted" style, which has been done by hand, in-house, and will have more color blocking and a cleaner, crisper rendering.
I've been working on "A Mermaid's Bath" by Toshia San for this comparison. Both have square drills, and while one is slightly smaller than the other, I think these kits will still illustrate the differences in the rendering pretty well! I’m excited to hear your thoughts on today’s update.
I'll have some additional reviews and unboxings for you to take a look at below, if you're curious to see more, but keep in mind that up until this series, all kits that have been unboxed or completed have the original hybrid charting style to them.

I REALLY like the new pixel charted version. To me the details look better, the colours are better and the placement of colours is better. I hope to see more pixel charted kits in the near future. I did get her other one by cherriuki can’t wait to try her kits again.

Wow, thanks for sharing! I love the richness of the colors of the computer-charted one, and the cleanness of the pixel charted one. It’s like comparing an oil painting to a watercolor painting- both are absolutely lovely in their own way. I generally love more cartoony/illustration like artwork so I’d prefer the pixel for those, but I think more “realistic” paintings would work better in the computer version. I mean the fur on the cats looks like fur in the computer one! So it would definitely depend on the artwork for me in terms of which one I’d go for.
I’m excited for all the pixel kits. I have a ton of JGS kits that I adore but I have such a hard time getting through them because of the confetti the hybrid charting has. Looking forward to getting my hands on one of these!
Thanks for the comparison! I haven't ordered from them yet, but now I know that I definitely prefer the pixel-charted style. So when I do order, I can make an informed decision.
Thank you for the comparison, Katie! I would be really curious to see both images standing back several feet to see if they look more similar. It would be great if you could do that when you show us your finish. I am guessing at that point, the computer generated one will blend more together and look more like the hand rendered one. Great job!

Love the comparison. Also love the anticipation waiting for that middle row to come. I prefer the pixel charted version. The colours look richer, I prefer the more defined look, love the coat patterns of the cats and the definition of the scales in the tail. I do like the bench in the hybrid version, and the shading on the bath, but overall definitely the pixel version. It would also be interesting to see a copy of the original artwork in the same scale as the diamond paintings to see the level of definition, (or not). The smaller size picture makes that more difficult to see, at least through the camera lens. 😸😻
I’m really happy you did this comparison, the only thing that has stopped me from buying from jaded gem shop is that I really dislike the renderings style. I prefer the crisp clean rendering. Now that she is doing some hand charting I am going to save up to buy one. Unfortunately this is why I stick with DAC because they do hand rendering and it’s affordable (jaded gen shop absolutely deserves to charge what she does for her pixel charting) but I will save up to finally buy my first jaded hem shop
This is a fun comparison!
I personally see things between the two that put me on the fence for personal taste, but I see a lot of other people have already so harshly made the decision that one is objectively better.
So here's my thoughts: I really love the classic hybrid charting for the soft, antique look. The drape of fabric, the subtle shimmer of the water puddles and the porcelain looks soo good to me. It just doesn't feel the same in the pixel charting - which is totally valid!
Its interesting how the same image can be rendered to feel like a gorgeous antique find, and a more modern disney princess style artwork.
My 2 cents. It depends. It depends on the original artwork, and size matters. They hybrid recommended size is 70x105. I think? you got 50x70? there’s a huge difference in the renderings for the sizes. Yeah, it’s a lot of confetti, but that’s why we sometimes sneak in other projects. I just think the pixel one looks too much like a DAC rendering. I’m leaning into the classic/hybrid. These are meant to be viewed from a distance anyways, so I look forward to more updates.
I really like the pixelated( the newer version) I like the more defined lines and brighter colors. The other is fine but not as eye catching. my preference is color. I really like these comparison videos because you give insite on what to look for when making a decision and options one has in making a purchase. Have a fun trip!

I think it really depends on the picture. The mermaid looks great both ways, but I prefer the pixel version. The old masters canvases look more realistic in the hybrid version. I also think the colors are more muted and antique-ish in the hybrid version and that suits the old classics better. Fantastic breakdown of both styles, at any rate! Thank you.

Thank you for the comparison. I love the canvas on the left. The canvas really shows the different geometric designs. Which is something I loved. Also the rendering was clearer to me. This is just the way my ADHD interpretates both canvases.
Plus, I think it is cute that a Mermaid wears slippers.

I love the pixel art better, and I am sure it is easier to do. But....wondering....I am doing an Old Master from Jade right now, and thinking that the original style makes more sense for the Old Masters. Of course, it is a lot more work--confetti and more confetti.
I love both of these renders, but I know I would enjoy the pixel charted because I know what kind of downward spiral I go into with that much confetti of the hybrid 😅
I have to be brutally honest here, and I may be alone in my opinion, but surely a product should be the best it can be as standard? These kits aren't cheap anyway, so why would a customer want to pay for a canvas that isn't top notch, or pay extra for a clearer version? I'm sorry, I know Jade is a friend of yours, but I've yet to be convinced to buy from this company, especially when better quality and more affordable companies (in my opinion) are a reliable go-to.
I think it probably has something to do with the subjectivity of style. I really enjoy both of these for different reasons, but yes, I do prefer the pixel charted version myself! I think it’s fair to allow room for people’s different tastes, so long as they are clearly differentiated. I definitely see where you’re coming from though. If I got one of the two not knowing I preferred the other because I did not know it existed, I’d be upset too if I found out later I could have had something better!

@princeofanxiety that's me, lol. I bought the hybrid chart one a while ago... maybe 6 months ago, and I haven't had the chance to work on it yet. But now the pixel charting exists, and I definitely would've gotten it instead had it existed when I bought the image. But I'm not going to repurchase, so I guess I'll work on the confetti heavy hybrid. Oh well. I am glad there will be future offerings in the pixel charting
Who knows - maybe purchase statistics may suggest people prefer one rendering style over another, and the company goes with only that as their signature style in the future. I'll wait to see what happens going forward👍🏽
For some images more confetti is honestly better than this kind of pixel charting, it really just comes down to an image by image basis, there are many images that would not look good at all in the Pixel style charting and I feel like Jade will make really good decisions about which images will do well with this. I have completed over three canvases from Jades shop in her original charting and absolutely love them all

Thank you! Love thar kinf of videos! I prefer the hand rendered but I don't understand why some areas seem to not match the original painting. The floor in the background has lost the shapes in the corners and the color seems too dark. Hand rendering is tricky and with time and experience, I think I start to be very demanding on rendering.
Hand charted hands down/ the clarity is so much better and doesn’t seem to have a lot of unnecessary confetti
Although the pixel is a sharper image, I think it depends on the image as to how I would want it to be betrayed. I think there are some images that I would prefer the hybrid. So I would say I see a need for both styles.

Great explanation about the difference between the pixel charted and the hybrid charted versions of the artwork. There are definite pros and cons of each. I like the crisp look to the pixel version. That said, the closer rendering to the original artwork that is obvious on the hybrid is nice, also.

I love comparison videos! And this is the one painting from Jade that I really really want so I am geeking out over this comparison! My eyes love the hand charted version because of the clean contrast and omg the tiles with the way they capture light and shadow are amazing. That said, it's hard for me to pick a favorite between the two styles for this painting because I really love the original style as well, specifically the transparency of the fin which is just expertly done. I am SO excited to see the rest of the painting unfold! Yes please do more of these comparisons, my brain LOVES to witness the differences!
I like the tail and the cats better on the right and the towel better on the left. I believe the cats have a more realistic pattern to their coats on the right and the fin or tail looks better or more natural also on the right. The towel is just more defined on the left which makes it better to identify as such. The rug on the right looks as if it is laying more flat on the floor as the rug on the left kind of looks like it is on a slight incline. Without the comparison, I don’t think I would care either way or even notice. As of this video, I like parts of each rendering. I really like kits with a lot of confetti due to the detail and realistic results when completed. They are worth the time spent on them and I enjoy the process. As of this video, I like parts of both renderings. I can’t wait to see more as it is completed.
I love your comparison videos! One thing I much prefer with the hand charted image is the colors….a cooler pallet compared to the warmer colors in the classic/hybrid image.

Holy wow!! I love the pixelated is amazing. I actually ordered a different canvas but haven’t been able to bring myself to do it after receiving because of the computer generated, you can tell it is so confetti heavy and hard to see the picture just looking at the canvas. Everyone has their own preferences.
Good comparison, I prefer the shading/less of a smutty look and the animals in the pixel one more, but prefer the classic one over all.

I am new to diamond art painting so I don't have much reference to go off... but, I like the crisp edges and some of the sharper details in the pixel version. But I also like the soft appearance of the hybrid which I think works well with the art style.
I thought about doing summer with the masters and working on my all time favorite painting, Girl With the Pearl Earring. But that maybe too ambitious for a beginner. I also thought about Norman Rockwell The Doctor and The Doll because the girl was my great grandma Connie. But I can't find it anywhere.

Hi. I love your comparison videos! In general I love the hand charted pixel version, but think the mermaid tail in the one on the right is the way to go. The original picture isn’t as transparent. If I was doing the one on the left, the only thing I would change is the fin on the floor. Thanks for showing this!

Pixel for sure... i just can't afford a diamond painintg that is almost the cost of 2 DAc painitngs, when DAC already offers great clear canvases.
I much prefer the pixel charted version. It looks much cleaner to my eye, sharper, and a lot less busy. However, the hybrid charted kit has a few area where, once completed, shows off more detail.
The hybrid version seems a lot darker, which I think hides some of the details, so I think out of the 2, I prefer the hand charted version

The newer version is much better. I just bought my first painting from JGS "Gamer Girl" Ive seen it completed and liked it... so hopefully i enjoy working on it.
I like both but the one on the right just seems to go with the theme better for me.

The hand charted one is far superior. The... blending... in the computer charted one just makes many things look like big smudges (like the cats and the tail), especially if you take a step away. Patterns are completely lost, It all just blends together and is way too blurry and messy for my taste. I get what Katie is saying about it being "softer" but this is just waaaay too much. Looks more messy than it does soft.

I love the pixel charted alot. The hybrid not so much. Not to be disrespectful to the shop but to me it looks muddy. I just dont like that look very much. The hybrid is just not for me at least not in this canvas. I have seen other classic versions that you have done from this shop that was absolutely beautiful so maybe its just this chart. Im not a fan of tons of confetti either. I do love seeing your comparisons though. I love it!
Kinda off topic, I went to order this painting and I saw the painting that would be hand charted for $200. Is this worth the option? I couldn’t find exactly what that meant and what difference I would see. Thanks Katie!
How do you set up your camera and what camera do you use
Pure opinion. Besides the drill quality, I’ve seen better charting on Temu. I ended up throwing away my JGS purchase halfway through due to the charting. I was happy they are doing “digital charting” but when I saw the price I actually laughed out loud. Why pay double the amount for this charting when we can buy the quality for half this price at DAC. This company reminds me so much of DIYmonnshop and without some drastic changes I wonder will JGS have the same demise? Again my opinion.
