    The xbox going to a low resolution is a safe gaurd because any display can safefully display that low, and if you have it set for 4k but then plug it into a 1080 screen it wont display, so its normal for xboxs to display the lower resolution to be safe, in fact there is a safe mode in case it doesnt go to the lower resolution, you hold power for 10 seconds to fully power it off, then hold eject and power together for roughly 20 seconds (there will be a 2nd chime to let you know its complete)

      I thought that HDMI used a standard called EDID that enables the screen to communicate with the device to determine the appropriate resolution. Or maybe they still do this, but default to low res to account for any edge cases and reduce tech support calls

    • @TheObsesedAnimeFreaks
      @TheObsesedAnimeFreaks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Incommensurabilities both. usually when you plug in a HDMI cable, the screen and source will communicate to determine what resolution both support and then display the maximum supported res. though MS has a habit of not automatically setting displays to the maximum refresh rate but that's neither here nor there. with xbox, it's most likely you are expected to plug it into one display and that display should never change unless you are turning the device off and moving it to a different location. so renegotiating the display capabilities wasn't ever programmed into the device. it should not be needed, with a PC it's different.

    Best reason to buy a refurb: it's already been bad once, and gotten it's spanking and been told it better not do it again or it'll end up in the skip.
    From an engineering standpoint, looking at how the thing goes together is kind of interesting for me. The little bit of metal over the SSD is probably just a shield -- colloquially, a "shielding can" -- put a magnet to it, it's probably sheet steel! It's more for making the FCC happy than for making heat go away, in other words. That GINORMOUS shielding can over the underside of the heatsink mount was... of questionable necessity at best, but some money sunk into this sort of thing is often for confounding and obfuscating repairs or for mystifying the public in that general direction, sadly. It's the same sort of reason Apple uses those horribly daft Pentalobe screws and your laptop uses some crazy input voltage like 18.5vDC or something. Nothing in there runs at 18.5vDC. They don't make chips that run at 18.5vDC. It gets dropped to 12vDC and 5vDC and 3.3vDC -- sane voltages commonly used by chips. Why does your laptop use 18.5vDC? or maybe it's 19vDC, or 20v... and it squawks like Polly didn't get a cracker if it's a half a volt off or it thinks you're using the wrong charger -- why? Because that's money for Dell or HP or Acer or whoever made it, if you then go off and buy another charger from them, which they'll happily sell you for a princely sum. If you know who Louis Rossman is, you know what I'm talking about, and if you don't, go find his channel and go watch what he has to say about 'Right to Repair', what it is, and why it matters.
    Sorry, I ramble. At any rate, the way it goes together inside seems rather modular, almost, and in my mind I could see a design for a computer being built in a similar fashion. I might have to play around with that, I like to do those things. It's really a smart design, well thought through and well laid out. Sure, they could make it a bit easier to take apart, but one, it's a game console, and two, it's Microsoft... I mean, really, what do you expect from the sort of company that just released an operating system that is such a blatant ripoff of MacOS while simultaneously somehow managing to be even more 'walled garden' to use than anything Apple's _ever_ done (which is quite an achievement if I say so myself) that they may as well hang a sign over the door that says "we have money and lawyers, please come sue us"!

    • @laserhawk64
      @laserhawk64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Green Mamba Games Actually, in my experience... refurb tech usually is at least as reliable as new, and often moreso.
      Mind you, I'm a hardware nerd who mostly doesn't game. When I do game it generally requires either DOSBox or dedicated hardware. I also know how to fix my own stuff, and the only two games consoles I ever had were a Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance SP. Both were sold long ago in a moment of foolishness -- we all have our moments! -- and I've regretted it ever since.

    I had my brand new Thunder Tornado switch res to 640x480 one day without even changing monitors. Normal day, no maintenance or software updates anywhere, then all of a sudden my XSX boots into potato res mode. I think it's more of a software issue than a refurb vs. new issue. It only happened once, but it definitely made me worried that either my display wasn't sending the right info, or the console was about to crap itself. I'm actually glad to see your console did the same thing, so I know my 65" LG C1 wasn't the problem.

    Just a note about the thermal paste, they might be using a phase change material which becomes more liquidy when exposed to heat. PTM 7958 is such a TIM and Lenovo has been using it on their Legion laptops. It has a good track record of staying stable and endurant.

    13:30 the resolution thing is a common bug with the software. You are lucky if you could fix it with a reboot. If it happens on my LG CX I have to shut down and replug to completely fix the issue. The easiest way to prevent this from happening, though, has been to start the TV first (or change the channel to the Series X HDMI channel first) and then turn on the console.

    I bought my Xbox Series X when the Special Edition Halo Edition Series X finally came out this past fall. In the past generation I owned all 3 consoles: Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, plus a top-of-the-line PC with an AMD 16 core, 32 thread 5950x, $500 ROG Motherboard with tons of room to expand, got myself the Asus ROG Water Cooled (AIO) 6900xt with a base clock thats 500 Mhz higher than a non-liquid cooled 6900xt, 64 GB DDR4 Memory clocked at 4000Mhz (which is pretty close to DDR5 frequency of 5000Mhz and much cheaper), I also got a $200 Sound Blaster Pro Gaming AE-5 (mostly for its scout mode that enhances where you can hear enemies come from). After that all I had to think about was the Power Supply and I found a good price from EVGA (I have an EVGA power supply that still works and the computer is 12 years old, so I trust EVGA because they also have a 10 year warranty), oh and also its Platinum Rated, which means it goes between 92%-94% power efficiency so my electrical bill doesn't go through the roof. Finally the for storage I went out and got 2 of the FireCuda 530 PCIE 4.0, which is the only drive certified as fast enough to run in the PS5. They were $1200 each, so I paid $2400 for 2 NVME drives with 7, 300 Mbs and a read of 5400 Mbs, it literally floods the PCEI 4.0 lane, which is why I think we're now moving so quick from pCIE 4.0 to 5.0 so we can put faster NVMEs in them come 2023 I bet!
    Also, to go back to the original topic from my rant about my incredible PC, as I said I had all consoles last generation, but I hardly played PS4 once the Xbox One X was released because it was just a snappy and smooth experience. Also, surprisingly I never had my One X ever crash or freeze on me, whereas with my PS4 there were constantly problems. Ever since I got my Halo Edition Xbox Series X I have been completely glued to it, I literally have to put time aside from my Switch and Steam on my dual-boot PC running Windows and Linux Mint 20.04. I don't game on Windoze, only on Linux, but sometimes you need to have Windoze 10 there in case you need to do an online conference call and on Windoze will run it. But yea, after the graphics and speed at which this new Xbox Series X is playing at is just breathtaking, not to mention Series X has more internal storage than the PS5. But the biggest thing happening to PS5 right now is that Microsoft literally just bought like 25 studios, big and small. Microsoft has even said at the end of 2023 they will not longer make Call of Duty games compatible with PS5, along with several other popular and once cross-play games. But you know what, it looks good on Sony to get a taste of its own medicine, I hope Sony likes the taste of revenge from Xbox. The ONLY reason Sony did better last generation was because it had so MANY exclusive games, but now the tables are turning and in a few years Xbox will have more exclusive than the PS5. I can't wait to feast on the tears of the foreign made technologically inferior PS5 owners, oh how sweet they'll taste. Plus it's WAY easier to upgrade you Xbox memory and cheaper than with Sony!
    BUY AMERICAN, BUY AN XBOX!!! XBOX FTW!!!

    If you see a refurb version or new version next to it I would always choose refurb because seeing it will tell you the new ones will fail soon, so you now know the new stuff has issues and maybe you can avoid the pain and stress of wating for the fix. The refurb version has already been through this and sorted out and should be trouble free to end of life.

    • @GraveUypo

    The lack of integrated battery pack on the controller is considered a plus by a lot of us. Batteries degrade over time pretty quickly actually, having easily changeable batteries keeps the controllers alive for longer. Also if my battery dies mid game, just quickly switch it out, vastly superior to having to now play wired until it's done charging.
    My Dual shock 3's all repeatedly give me battery issues. I replaced the batteries, but half of them the new batteries are vastly inferior to the factory ones. Compare them to my 360 controllers, I have every single one of those in extremely good working order, mainly bc battery isn't swelling on the inside squeezing everything. And all you really need is rechargeable AA batteries, which makes interchangeability easy. My 360s just use the same batteries I use on my series controllers, rather than having a specific battery pack that is a specific shape, those become hard to find over time, and they become more expensive and cheaper quality once console becomes retro.
