John Farnham wrote this song about the time he sang with the Little River band, they tried to control him, wouldn't let him be himself, they went as far as tapeing his microphone stand to the ground so John Farnham could move around the stage and interact with the crowd.
This is one of my most favourite songs.
    👍👍👍🇦🇺❤️

Great reaction. This song was written by John as a direct response to his time as the lead singer of The Little River Band. They brought him in to replace the original lead singer, Glenn Shorrock. They promised him the world and ended up clipping his wings completely. When he came into the band, they were already deeply in debt and John never made a cent during his 5 years with them... as whatever money was made on the albums he recorded, got sucked up to pay off the previous debts owed by the group. They dictated what and how he could sing and even taped down his mic lead in an attempt to stop him working the stage. He felt all they wanted him to be was a clone of their old lead singer but with a greater vocal range. He wasnt allowed to be himself.
John also wrote an awesome hit song called Playing to Win while he was with them, and by the time the LRB machine got hold of it, he only ended up with 55% of one of the best songs he had ever written.
So, Let Me Out was a direct response to his 5 years stint with that band. When he left The Little River Band, David Hershfelder and Wayne Nelson also left at the same time and went with John and joined the Farnham Band.
    ❤❤

I always love that these two went with him, and both always look like they're having an amazing time, especially Wayne when you compare him to how he looked in the LRB days.

Sadly Playing To Win wasn’t a hit at the time of release in 1984 the song didn’t even make the top 50 .
The die hard Little River Band fans didn’t buy into the change in musical direction from harmony California soft rock to more new wave synth rock.
Australian TV sporting programs pick up Playing To Win as a promotional song boosting the song as sporting anthem.
Plus being John’s signature LRB it was the only LRB song that John kept in his concert set list permanently which became a fan favourite .
Wayne Nelson never really left Little River Band he juggled both LRB with the Farnham Band in the late 80’s early 90’s .
If Wayne wasn’t available John got Joe Creighton on bass guitar .
Wayne wasn’t invited back in the Farnham band after the legal issues started with LRB’s naming rights started .
That line up LRB with no original Australian members got booed out of Australia .

@@markjames3522 yeah I don't think anything much happened with LRB between when John left in 86 and when Shorrock went back in 87ish. Gap Year LOL. Yeah Wayne was a floater between John and LRV till the whole legal drama with the ownership of the LRB name Happened. He did several concerts and albums with John between 86 and 90/91 ...Now he's been the lead singer of LRB for 20 odd years.

In mid 86 when John left LRB after their recording 8 album recordings contract with Capital Records was completed with the underrated No Reins album.
With drummer Steve Prestwich left the band before John then John David Hirschfelder and Glenn Wheatley also quitting as their manager . Graham Goble really thought that was it for LRB was finished with for good , until MCA records gave LRB a chance with recording deal with new management only if Glenn Shorrock was to return.
But even with new management the revolving door of members still happened.
All the original members had shares in the band has each them left guitarist Stephen Housden bought them out eventually making him the sole owner of the naming rights of the band .
It’s was in a good way that LRB wasn’t successful John so John didn’t invested with a share in the band .
Let Me Out is totally directed at Graham Goble

The more you watch John, the more you will see that yes, he hits those notes - every time. He is a phenomenal vocalist, always gives 110%, everything you watch of his will be different, but everything will blow you away. Stage presence and charisma for days, and his whole band are brilliant too. Looking forward to seeing more reactions!

Girl, you haven't heard anything yet.... The man is called "the Voice"... A legendary performer. Australian Music Royalty. You really need to go down the Farnham rabbit hole. 6 Decades to choose from... started in 67, first song went to No.1 and then won King of Pop five years in a row. He faded away for a while then released his Whispering Jack album and it went to No.1 and stayed there for 26 weeks. John has had hits over 6 decades. He was still sounding pitch perfect in his 70s, only stopped because of the COVID lockdown. Unfortunately, the past year he has fought mouth cancer, but we've just heard his is Cancer Free and has started singing around the house again. He is modest, humble, funny and extremely talented. He can sing ANYTHING. He is an ICON of the Australian Music Industry and loved by everyone. Anything from this concert is awesome.... th-cam.com/video/UWnm_qwa2Xg/w-d-xo.html

The keyboardist, David Hirschfelder is absolute the real deal. He was with the John Farnham band for about 6 years before focusing on composing, and is Oscar nominated for his work. Brett Garsed, the guitarist has been with John for close to 30 years, with a break in the middle to do some other work.

I actually prefer his version of 'When the War is Over' from 'The Last Time' when he was older if you had to choose between the two for a reactor. It also provides a great example of even when he was in his 50s etc he could still belt it out like he was a young bloke. Arguably even better in the later years after he stopped smoking nearly 2 packs a day!

Apparently John wrote this song about his time with “the little river band”? Filling in, the taped his mic cord down so he couldn’t move around much, as as everyone knows John loves to work the stage and the crowd and perform. This is just what I have heard. Great powerful song though.

  • @kevkoala

With your explanation to the song, I got the feeling he might be talking about LRB (Little River Band) and how they want Glen Shorrock back and not John...this was before he went solo.
