- In this episode we are finally building our campervan shower frame!
We decided to build a custom wetroom to maximise on space which will hopefully mean we can fit in a composting toilet in the bathroom. We're building a recirculating shower in our van and this is the first stage before we waterproof the whole wetroom.
It was really tricky to frame the shower around all the awkward shapes of the van as usual!

And it needs a re-build .Thanx to you that your videos are in detail of both what not to do and what to do (beer with me. I on my 5th bear just now writing this)! So for me a long way to go. Have you consider / thought about a "rain water collection" so that fresh water is not such a limiting factor and there can always be a off-valve in the collection once it reaches a certain level, but then if there's rain, you have fresh water. You just need water filters and uv lights to clean the rain water for consumption. Just a suggestion. :)
Hey, nope can't say it's something we've thought of although it's always nice to be able to extend resources for longer. In practice we haven't found fresh water to be an issue though as our tank is big enough that it's never the first thing that requires attention, usually it's the inverse that we have to find somewhere to get rid of the grey water. that thing to make it square would be a level. all you have to do first is to level the van floor! Also, I think your 1x1 is overkill for a non load bearing wall
Levelling the van floor would have been a pretty big job on the incredibly slopey ground we were on! 😛 Even if we could have found a perfectly flat bit of ground to move the van to it still rises up at the rear and each corner has a slightly different drop with the weight distribution. So you'd need some experimentation with chocks or some nice air suspension to be able to even do it precisely. And even then without a pricey digital level you're relying on a reading a small bubble to get the correct angle... Much easier, quicker and more precise to do a couple of measurements with a tape measure, and works on any ground. Another quick and simple way is to to just have a big square, we had a smallish one but fashioned it a bit longer using some offcuts of timber which worked pretty good in places too.
For the wall studs we wanted the depth to be able to route all the pipes and wires and we use the cavities as extra storage pockets from the other side 👍

Yep welcome to the shower pain. Just finished our van, the shower was probably or one of the hardest things to do. We cut our own base and are doing the porta potty option.
Haha yep, one of those projects we put off for a while knowing it was going to be a bit of a pain... and it didn't disappoint 😅 So many times in the van everything would be so much easier if something was just a tiny bit bigger/smaller or further away, always seems to come down to the wire with making everything work 😛 But it comes together in the end, somehow!

Glad you're enjoying the videos and finding them useful 😊 We spend quite a lot of time doing the editing for each video but we enjoy it (and hopefully it's worth it!). We'd both played around a bit before but nothing on this scale, we try to get a bit better with each one :) Hope it won't be too long till you get to start your project! Any particularly good halfs you've run? We're hoping to swing by a few European ones on the road 🙂
@@SelfBuiltStories thanks for your reply. I’ve run a few interesting halfs, including trails. Like a 15 miler along a Pembrokeshire coastal path that was no more than a tyre width wide in 40 mph winds.
Next Sunday I’m running my 4th & final Palma Majorca half. It’s an amazing atmosphere with runners from 50 or more countries there. They also have 10k & full marathon distance also. I hear Valencia is good too so I fancy doing a 10k there next year.
Learning to edit videos can be challenging. I’ve been doing it for a while and still learning for my own channel. Also trying to be creative with the filming also.

I realise it's too late now. But for levelling your shower wall. You just need a decent size square & square it to the floor. Or use an off cut of plywood as long as you have 2 square edges
Also to save you some more space. 2 x 1 instead of 2 x 2 would have been sufficient for your walls. As long as you had enough cross members
Thanks for the comment, yeah we do have a square that we use quite a lot but it's not quite big enough so we found it was looking square but still being off by the time it got to the ceiling (didn't help that most of the wood has some slight bow to it too even after choosing the straightest bits!). We did actually gaffatape an extension to it with another ruler which worked pretty well in the end 😅 And yeah we almost did use 2x1 but thought it might make some other things a bit tricky like routing the pipe work and mounting the taps and things. Sure we could have got it to work though, always good to save more space as you say 🙂
I can sympathize with Tim as I am 6ft 5 and have sz 13 or 14 shoes. I always hang off the end of the bed.
Did you consider fibreglassing the shower?
Yeah I like to have space to hang off the end of the bed, width ways definitely wasn't an option for me! We didn't really consider it to be honest as the tanking option just looked a bit easier and less fiddly to do and get right to us. It worked really well for us so we'd do the same again most likely 👍
Nice work, probably could be nice to have a cut of on the left and right side of the filters .
Cheers! And do you mean a bit more space between the filters and the wall on each side? If so, we actually switched the plastic connectors for some brass ones which are a bit shallower, so it's a bit less of a tight fit now 😛
Late to the show , could have used a plywood to make the wallls , also could have done a little bump out for your knees that would be under the cabinet or towards underside of bed when useing toilet , not that it matters now
Cheers, we did consider making an alcove like that at one point actually but decided against it to keep the construction and waterproofing more straightforward, and we didn't want to eat into the space either side where we now have our shower tank and seat storage. Having used it for many months now we find we have enough space and don't hit our knees at all 👍 We used scraps of plywood for the walls that was in the van when we bought it, or if you mean for the frame too then we we wanted to batten it out to have space to route the pipes and wires, and also make it really easy to build and join piece by piece 🙂
It’s so exciting seeing your van come together. You are doing an amazing job. That was some very impressive GCSE maths. I love the cut away scenes in Cornwall. I am currently walking the SWCP and filming my walks and it wasn’t that long ago I passed through that area.

Cheers, and we used all of the leftover scraps from the original ply walls we took out the van at the beginning, it was ~5mm 👍

I was in exactly the same situation as you guys 6 months ago, I'm 6ft 2 and need a fixed bed back to front, and managed to get a bathroom in at 900mm long, it's cosy but adequate. It's amazing what a 6ft 2 bed length ways limits room else where.
As for acurate verticals I used a 400mm x 600mm square from the floor.
Did you not vapour barrier the camper?
I'd be intrested in what the finished overall weight is on the build with all that heavy duty stud work lol.
Yeah it's like a Tetris game trying to fit everything in to such a tight space, and somehow there always seems to be a way to _just_ make it work 😀 And no we decided not to put in a separate vapour barrier in the end. Weight wise we've weighed the van a few times during the build so far and are on track at the moment, but it definitely makes you think twice about everything that's going in! The shower frame could have been a bit lighter with less horizontal bits if our ply wasn't in such small pieces but we wanted to use up the scraps and wood we had left instead of buying any more. We might still shave a few bits out here and there because every little helps 😛

I love how clear and concise your explanations are. Keep up the good work. One suggestion I would make for the kitchen cabinets would be to make them pull out selves rather than stationary. Given the space constrictions in vans if you have pull out shelves (not with high sides like drawers, just an inch or so) you will be able to reach everything in the back of the shelves very easily. I have them in all of my kitchen cabinets and it make the space very usable.
Thanks! And yeah that's pretty sound advice, anything to make the small amount of space more usable is helpful. Most of what we're building will be pull-out drawers, we probably won't have many shelves at all with the kitchen layout we're going for we think. Possibly we'll a sliding shelf in our bulkhead larder area but haven't completely decided on what we're doing for that bit yet 🙂
How are you guys going to clad the back and sliding doors ?
We haven't completely decided yet, but we'll probably leave those till right near the end. We want to see how much weight we'll have to play with first and make sure we won't obstruct anything, but thinking we might put some of the leftover cladding on one half and have simple thin ply/carpet on the other. We'll see!
Just finished our shower! Hated having to work all the curves along our transit exterior wall. Every piece had to be uniquely shaped and it took forever. I hope yours is less tedious! Happy to see it coming along.

If you’ve mentioned this then apologies but are you installing ventilation for the shower. I was waiting for you to install a fan or equivalent. Great videos, keep up the good work 👍
Thanks! And good question we thought about that a lot. What we're planning on doing now is having a sliding door that finishes a little shy of the top of the frame leaving a small air gap, and then we have the maxxfan right outside the door which we'll have on extract mode while we're using the shower. Then we'll have the heater venting directly into the bottom of the shower through the wall and blowing dry air through, so what we're hoping is that there will be a decent airflow pushing all the moisture air out the top of the shower and being sucked out by the fan. We did think about installing an additional fan, but directly above the shower is solar panels, and the wall is quite a deep cavity so it would be a bit awkward. But (at least at the moment) we think it should work pretty well, and we should be able to close the door after a shower, leave the fan on with the heater going, and have the whole space dry itself out. That's the plan anyway, we'll see how well it works in practice of course, but from our quick test the other day we think it will 😛
Thats more like a bomb shelter 😄. Very substantial, honestly most of the material size could have been cut down on quiet a lot and still be more than strong enough but i really admire the thought you put in. Quality well above a lot of chippies i work with. Well done
Haha, cheers 🙂 Yeah it is pretty solid! We did consider building the whole frame out of 2x1s instead, but we thought using square timber would be easier to join and build up, and give some more material to fix our cabinets and bench seats too, route the pipe work through etc. We had to add a few more intermediate crossmembers than we originally thought as we were using up scraps of the plywood we had more edges that needed to be able to screw into something than if we'd had bigger pieces left. But yeah we probably could have used 2x1 for a few of those extra bits in hindsight to cut a fraction of the weight off, all a learning experience! 😄
@@SelfBuiltStories yeah nothing wrong with that. You did a great job with your limited experience. You should be proud. A lot of people and companies just use structural ply for the 3 sides and everything around it gives it extra rigidity doing away with any framing which obviously saves a huge amount of weight
Cheers, yeah we're happy with it :) With wood prices so high at the moment too we were pretty keen to use up all the wall scraps we had, but If we were to build it again we reckon we would probably go and make just the right wall a single sheet of ply to save a bit of space, but keep the others framed out the same as now

I am doing this part now and divided the van into 600 x 3 across Port to starboard ( I do boat upholstery lol ) with the shower for space I can't help but encroach on the space like coming out at 650 using up a bit of walkway . Did you have the same with yours . I have a boxer L3 by the way . Followed your power audit as well. Helped me so much .
Thanks a lot :) And yeah it does take a considerable amount of time... definitely slows the build down several times over but we're happy that we'll have all the videos to look back on one day 🙂 Glad they've helped! And yeah the shower was obviously quite a big footprint to get in and we spent a bit of time figuring out how far we wanted to have it in the van. We're pretty happy with the balance, it sticks out a little more than our kitchen but not enough that it feels in the way and we can both walk through the middle no problem. Going around the wheel arch and the awkward corner took some work but gave us a bit more usable space too

Cool, travelling around NZ in a motorhome a few years ago is one of the drivers behind us doing this project 🙂 And thank you! We've actually finished the shower room now (but not edited the video yet), what we've used is 2mm sheet PVC along with one feature wall of PVC faux tiles. And that was on top of a waterproof tanking layer for a bit of extra peace of mind that everything is nice and water tight. Pretty happy with how it turned out in the end 🙂

Hey! We've seen it, thank you ☺️ And we're going to be using a Simploo composting toilet that will live in the shower room and then we'll take it out whenever we want to shower. It'll have a 40mm waste pipe attached with an inline fan that's outside (to avoid having wires in the wet area) and attached to the toilet with flexipipe so it's easy to remove. That will vent out through the floor under the van in the bench seat area 👍

Hi guys just found your videos, Why have you used 2x2 timber for your shower cubical, if you used 2x1 timber on edge = more room when on the loo, cover internal walls with upvc sheeting, good luck
Hiya, we used the 2x2 for two reasons really. First was its all we had left at the time, and second because we wanted the depth in the wall to be able to route the pipe work through, and also we're using the recesses as exposed cubby holes for a bit more storage. But if we were doing it again, we would make the vertical ones 2x2s for the extra strength but probably use 2x1s for the horizontal extra pieces to support the ply, on edge like you say. We wouldn't save any space doing it that way but would save half the weight on those pieces. Also using all the small scraps of ply we had left meant we had to use more of the horizontal pieces to support them all on the joins. Possibly we'd also buy a big clean sheet of ply to avoid some of those, but yeah at the time we wanted to use up everything we had left to save buying anything extra. And thanks!

So hopefully it will create good airflow to remove the moisture and then dry out the shower room afterwards

A spirit level measures relative to Earth so doesn't work for us in a van on sloping ground unfortunately 🙂

I don't understand why people keep ki1ling their real estate by defeating the contours of the van with flat wooden frames. Yes, it's easier, but there's no benefit to doing it. It isn't hard math or hard to do. Flattening everything is lazy and destroys several inches of real estate. That is nonsense.
Guess I was prophetic... I wrote that at the beginning of the video. As time went on, I'm standing by it. Also, it's not a house. It's a van. WAY, way overboard with materials and building. Bet you blow the motor/trans in less than 50k miles and we can just wonder why 🤷♂️
Yep, that's why we made the back wall in three different sections so it hugs the contours of the van and there's no wasted space... 🙃 By doing away with a shower tray we were also able to push the shower right into the walls and box around the wheel arch and pillar for max space too. The maths wasn't hard but it was a faff and time-consuming as pretty much every piece on that wall is custom made and angled so can see why others don't bother if it's not their priority.
For us it was worth it, so the only bit of van wall that's not really part of it is the lower section that would obviously be pointless in the shower as we wouldn't be able to make use of it anyway, but it is a perfect for routing all the pipes and wires. Happy with our material choices throughout the van, weight is always a concern and you get more refined with each project. If we weren't using up scraps of plywood we could have had less crossmembers for this one, but wood is expensive so it's a trade-off. Possibly thinner battens in some places but not everywhere as we want depth for routing pipework, cables and mounting the sliding door. It's not a house but it is a home... that happens to be on wheels. Thanks for watching, cheers 👍

Hiya, do you mean as a wet room with all the tanking? If so then nope we've had no issues doing it that way and would do the same again. The only thing we need to do at some point is renew some of the sealant around the edges 👍

Are these white vans expensive to insure and what’s the yearly tax. Thanks
The road tax is currently £290 per year, and the insurance hard to say as it varies quite a lot depending on size, whether it's in conversion or not, usage, miles etc, so most people will go through a broker for a bespoke quote. For a rough ball park, probably somewhere between £300-700 per year. HTH

That's how we thought we'd do it in the beginning actually, but decided against it in the end as we already had to work around the wheel arch box and thought having two squared boxes would make standing space more limited and get annoying. Just boxing around the pillar lower down wouldn't be enough too because the van wall slopes in as it goes up so to make it an easy right angle we'd have to bring it out into the van more which we figured would just waste space. We quite like having the diagonal wall as it's a nice place for the shower rail to go and made it really easy to route the pipes and wiring through it. We quite like how it looks with the diagonal bit 😀

Builders square mate. They are large so just stick it on the floor and assuming your shower frame side is straight, you will get an accurate fitting. It raises a good point though! If you dont have a level floor to park the van on or your van doesnt sit level. Once you have covered up the walls of the van, you wont have a datum point. For anyone doing a build, set your bed or kitchen units level to the van. Once you have those you will be able to find level to the van anywhere or use a spirit level and angle measure and work out how many degrees your van leans front to back and you can set everything to that and then everything will look right to the eye.
Yep we have one and use it all the time, super handy! Unless you have a huge square though we found there was still a margin of error as the battons were a lot longer than the square we had, so by the time it reaches the roof it can be out a little, especially with wood that's not completely straight to begin with and a semi-spongy floor (vinyl). We did gaffotape an extension to ours which worked pretty good 😛 That gave us a decent reading and then measuring a 345 we were able to get the final position really nice and accurate with barely any effort 👍
