Is this 2016 VW Beetle Dune APR Stage 3 a REAL performance compact car?

  • The VW Beetle is one of the most iconic cars in the World! For 2016 VW created a special Beetle to give the car more styling aggression. This particular VW Beetle Dune has an APR Stage 3 tune to add more performance to the equation. Under the hood the tuned 1.8L turbocharged inline-4 that pumps out almost 300HP & mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Beetle Dune's exterior tries to tie in some of the styling from the past but also from VW's rallycross cars. On the inside you will find an interior that is unique to the Beetle Dune. Is this 2016 VW Beetle Dune APR Stage 3 a REAL performance compact car?

    Great video. Nice little car with nostalgia and performance to go with it. I'm glad VW thinks about the enthusiast that likes something more than transportation from Point A to Point B, but gives the option to have fun too. Who doesn't like the surge of turbocharged torque? Additional vents are not always required, and the designers know best; so no need for a consumer to get annoyed for not having an opening if one is not needed because all it does it to channel more dirt in your car's driving component. .

  • @stephenhendricks103
    @stephenhendricks103 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Congrats, Joe. This is the most ludicrous vehicle you've ever reviewed. But not necessarily "ludicrous" in a bad way, more in a Tesla ludicrous mode way. :) Having owned a couple of GTI's with APR Stage I tunes, I can attest to both its reliability and its performance.
    A word about the stages of APR tunes. Stage I is a quick ECU tune at a reasonable price (circa $700.) Stage II adds a race exhaust and an upgraded intake system at a very reasonable ($150), the latter of which can be added separately to the Stage I package. Stage III involves a much more extensive modification, replacing the original VW turbo with a significantly larger, higher pressure Borg Warner unit. It's MUCH more expensive and can run as much as a total of $6,000 (including the Stage I and Stage II mods and the new turbocharger.) Frankly, I'm a bit skeptical that the vehicle actually has a Stage III APR tune including the new turbo given the 300 HP claimed in the video. Depending on the particular brand/model a Stage III mod is rated at well over 400 HP. But I'll take your (and Walker Ford's) word for it.
    As far as the AT in this particular vehicle, I'd prefer VW's DSG but either a conventional AT or DSG is preferable to a manual transmission in one respect. With either one, the new owner won't have to be concerned with frequent clutch replacements and/or upgrades, a more or less expected issue with any APR (or other manufactuers') tune for any stage. VW's and Audi's DSG's and AT's can handle the additional performance without significant wear.
    It's widely recognized that VW traditionally publishes extremely conservative estimates of their vehicles' HP and torque, a practice that probably results from tax and insurance costs for higher performance vehicles in Europe. The EA888 engine in either its 1.8L or 2.0L form is an excellent, durable engine and one of the best candidates for performance tuning. An APR Stage I tune adds most of the available performance improvements in real world driving with few if any sacrifices. I added a Stage I tune to my MK6 GTI at about 40K miles and put another 40K on it before replacing it with a MK7.5 GTI. It cost me about 10% in terms of fuel economy and probably about 10,000 miles in tire replacement. But I'm a pretty conservative driver on the street and the additional power is VERY tempting so YMMV.

      @stephenhendricks103 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vdubbg Depends on what you're looking for. Personally, I think a Stage III tuning in a FWD VW that approaches 400 HP isn't worth the investment unless one is looking for a track tool. And a track setup in a Beetle is silly. But obviously, YMMV.

    • @vdubbg
      @vdubbg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephenhendricks103 Agreed. While I wouldn't spend stage 3 money. If they would have used all the Gti parts in the beetle you could put a IS38 (golf R) swap and get that kind of power for around $2k with stage 2 tune.

  • @zxtenn
    @zxtenn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Youre right about a different transmission and probably a better diff. too, the newer models had a 2.0 liter turbo with above 200 but that's still not nearly 300, with compromised traction its not a drag car but fun to drive You didn't mention total mileage and to be honest VW has its share of issues but for a VW lover who wants to take a chance and keep mileage low be a fun car.

    I'm going Looney over this Duney! I love having horses, but if I'm "having" horses, I want Stampeding Horses and this sure looks like it's in the running.😉 It's not necessarily a deal breaker, but this Dune should have manual reigns. Now I believe in more meat on the street. What would you say to more up front Joe, and how much more do you think would fit. Also, would one have to maintain equality in whatever size you increase the front to, to also have to match it in the back? Also, I would have loved to have heard some 0 to 60 times. As to the back seat, yeah, that's a Zonk. I would remove them for the practicality of more storage and the dividend to their removal would be less weight! Oh yeah, I know it's an optical illusion, but the Dune looks like it's been chopped like so many of the '50's Merc Hot Rods. Let me end by saying that watching your subscriber numbers means you've got the pedal to the metal. As always, Save the Wave🙋🏼‍♂️

    I always picture the driver of this type of car as a birkenstock-wearing, pony-tailed, Marcia Brady looking hipster who flashes the "peace sign" as she drives by. IMO one of the least "manly" car's you can buy. Nevertheless, this model might be a little out of the ordinary and could be a fun DD especially with that APR tune but the Beetle does nothing for me as a car guy. Nice review Joe.

    I wouldn't insult my car by putting a snickers in the glove box. I hate snickers.
    I'd go with a Ho Ho or a Ding Dong, or maybe a Twinkie.

    such a disappointment that the dune was never offered in a 6 speed manual. I'd definitely daily one if that was the case.
