  • Did you know the cold is the quickest way to KILL your citrus tree? Learn about the RULE OF 10's and how you can grow a citrus tree even in a closet with NO SUNLIGHT! Learn how we found an excellent grow light choice that isn't a fire hazard!
Get our FREE CARE GUIDE by signing up for our newsletter
Rule of 10's: Citrus trees will die in 10°F weather in 10 hours and 20°F weather in 20 hours. They will survive in 30°- 40°F weather, but they will not be happy. They will drop many leaves but should recover. We recommend bringing your tree indoors or into a garage when the temperature is consistently below 40°F. Exposing your tree to very cold temperatures is the quickest way to kill it.
Christmas Lights: If your tree is outdoors and you cannot move it indoors during a freeze, you can wrap it with incandescent (not LED) Christmas lights. Then wrap your tree in burlap or plastic and tie it at the base and the top. Turn off the lights when the climate warms to prevent burning the tree.
Micro-environments: If you have your tree near a south- facing wall, it will reflect sunlight and keep the tree warmer. Shade will protect the tree from frost and temperature changes. Wind protection is important; wind will exacerbate the effects of cold.
What is citrus? Fresh Meyer lemons, pink variegated lemons, Persian limes, Kaffir limes, Australian Finger limes, Navel oranges, Blood oranges, Valencia oranges, kumquats, calamondins, and Rio Red grapefruit!

Out of curiosity, how is a 15-40 watt LED grow light sufficient for a plant that requires so much sunlight? Wouldn't a more dense grow light such as a 100 watt LED grow light be even better?
    Thank you!

can you tell me why the internet says that a citrus tree needs 20-30 DLI by day, which equals 12 hours of 200watt grow light..... and you say a 24w light is enough? (ok you showed it on a seedling). but does it work for a 2m tree? in fruiting stage?

I just purchased the grow light. Does the light come with the stick in the video? Looking forward to planting my lime tree and watching your videos to learn how to keep my lime tree thriving and eventually bearing fruit. Thanks for such informational videos.

I germinate my lemon tree from seed and purchased a plant light from Lowe's and covered my plants with a see through plastic container and shined the light on the plants so they could grow. I recently planted grapefruit, and oranges the same why with much success. His idea is good when your plants get bigger.

@@theresabell-zepeda3890 Did you purchase the see through plastic container from Lowes? I already have my lime tree in a plastic container and I am using the sans grow light. My patio receives a lot of shade so I just plugged my sans light in. Is it ok to leave the grow light on all day? Currently I have it on for almost 4 hours. Thanks for your helpful reply.

@@RHOMANTIC1 No, I did not purchase the container from Lowe's. I used a plastic container I had a the house I used to store fabric. You can get a container at Wal-Mart for less. First boil some water for your soil to kill the bugs in you soil, then plant your send and cover the plants with the container and then shine the light on them. I used a desk lamp that has that flexible cord you know like a reading lamp. Yes, it's ok to leave on for some days in the beginning but then turn it off to give them rest when they start to bud. Do for get to water. I just planted oranges and grapefruit from seed I brought from the store the are doing great. The sun on you porch should be ok too. I'm germinating strawberry seeds for I purchased from the store. Good luck, I wish I could send you a pic or two😊🍈🍋🍊

      @@RHOMANTIC1 hi,
Just came across your comment and I wanted to say- it is definitely 100% OK to have your light on all day. When I say this, I mean something like 12-16 hours a day. For instance, turn on during mornig routine before work, and turn off once you get home for the night. 4 hours a day is not nearly enough to provide sufficient foot-candles for photosynthesis of the plant. (I suspect you meant to say 14, and this was a simple typo, but just in case...)
I’d also like to stress the importance of giving the plant a day-night schedule. Remember, no plant was “designed” to be indoors. Some adapt to indoor environments much better than others, but they are ALL meant to be outdoors. The day-night cycle is vitally important for the plant to be able to regulate its physiological operations.

Are you sure it was dead? Last winter my 5 ft.Meyer lemon had an a abundance of flowers and began to lose leaves and little lemons. Feel it was spider mites...brought it outside with five leaves which blew off quickly. Thought it was a goner! . This is what I tried.....Used bone meal to water two or three times. Use Dyna-Grow as a spray foliage fertilizer and a moisture meter (4) for watering which should be till it drips out and registers 9. Put a barrier on trunk masking tape with tanglefoot put on it to trap insects that crawl up trunk. I also wash the leaves off with a Dawn solution to help prevent the mites and have sprayed with Neem oil. Repotted with a cactus/citrus soil. Now it’s winter again and my fingers are crossed. I use a grow light with reflector and a 5000k full spectrum bulb for 12 hours a day. I have used a humidifier or sprayed leaves with water. Also, I have an overhead fan that I turn on to increase air circulation that apparently they like. Some leaves are yellow and dropping which can be expected from coming inside. I have a lot of flowers and two nice size lemons growing. I hope the tree survives the next few months until spring comes again. Good luck with your lemon tree!

Hi, I am from Bangladesh. Is sunlight essential for a lemon tree? My lemon tree gets only 2-3 hours of sunlight throughout the day.
