    My friend was swimming for Ecuador when the Munich attack occurred. He said that he and his fellow athletes were located rather far from that section of the Olympic village and were not fully aware of what all was going on at the time. Not sure if TV access was restricted or what. Apparently the German police had that area of the village pretty locked down, but to everyone's horror it made no difference for those Israeli athletes. It can be something unrelated to this specific topic, but I know that there are many teachers and mentors that DO care about the destiny of young generations and don't use trust to use our children as an object. Are the Olympics worth it? Athletes dedicating their lives for a sport for little to no money, brief fame, few fortunate to get endorsements, cities losing revenue, unable to financially recover for hosting the games. While the Olympic Committee receives billions just to dangle the carrot for countries to bid on hosting the games. Is it really worth it?

    • @SarahB1863
      @SarahB1863 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on who you ask. The athletes absolutely think it's worth it, for the same reason football teams think the Super Bowl is worth it and golfers think the Masters is worth it. The Olympics is considered the pinnacle of the sports that participate in it, and there are some sports where there isn't much between nothing and an Olympic medal (like table tennis.) It's something to strive for. No matter what other awards you've got, having an Olympic gold medal means you're the best there is.
      And to a LOT of athletes, it isn't about getting money or endorsements; it's about the thrill of participating. Most athletes who make it to the Olympics know they have zero chance of medaling, but they're happy just to be there and take part. It's just a lot of fun.
      Also, smart money managers can make the Olympics profitable for their city, and several cities have done very well, Los Angeles and London being 2 examples. Obviously there have been boondoggles - The 2004 Greece games is one example - but if you study WHY those games lost money, it all comes down to money management. Cost overruns, creating complexes that are overly extravagant, and not following through on plans for venues post-Olympics are what create problems.

    After Tlatelolco, bodies were put in mass graves, a lot of people never found out what happened to their family members, the military actually started walking into the apartments that were around the area searching for the students, other people that was walking by were attacked too, and just days before the olympics people pay by the government were still washing the blood out of the streets.
    The slap in the face for the families was that during the opening of the game, white doves were released as a sign of peace and the slogan was "Mexico for peace".

I agree with most of the list though.

Now in 2022 my country doesn't know the exact number of deaths and a lot of people was never found (alive or death). 1968 is an open wound in Mexico's history and every October 2nd the whole country mourn the losts of all those students.
    I'm not trying to minimize what happened in Atlanta, I just want to say that the Tlatelolco massacre was huge and it isn't "solve" yet
