Bartman's "mistake" shouldn't be on here. That was not a mistake. Fans will reach for a foul ball if it's coming toward them, and if the ball is in the stands, it's fair game for the fans to catch it.
Instead, Zidane's headbutt should be up high. That happened in the World Cup final, and it cost France a World Cup championship.

    • @brianarbenz1329

Besides that, it would have been just the second out had the ball been caught, and the Cubs gave up multiple runs in the rest of the inning. So the Bartman mishap was not as crucial to knocking the team out of the series as many think.

In the bottom of the 9th inning, the Cardinals had 1 to 0 lead and were 3 outs away from winning the series. The first batter for the Royals hit a chopper into play. The Cardinals fielded it and got it to first base before the runner reached, but the umpire, whose view of the play was obscured, incorrectly ruled the runner safe. The Cardinals proceeded to collapse, and the Royals went on to win the series in 7 games.

I agree. It wasn’t a player mistake, it was the coach’s. Lynch was at his peak and had been kicking butt all day. Lynch and the OL were pounding it down the field, basically unstoppable. He was why they got so close to scoring on this last drive. Then Pete Carroll in his infinite stupidity calls for a two yard up the middle pass play and the Cheatriots look like heroes. Just so you know, I’m not a Seahawks fan. This play was when I realized that some games, including big ones, just might be rigged. I don’t watch much NFL nowadays. Peace. Out.

It happened again this past season in the NFL on a Monday night game between Denver and Buffalo. The Bills held a 22-21 lead with 35 seconds remaining, but gave up 28 yards on a pass interference call. The Broncos have no timeouts remaining and have to hurry to the line to get the FG attempt off, which they do, but miss on a 41-yard attempt by Will Lutz. But the Bills were flagged for 12 men on the field, giving the Broncos a 36-yard 2nd attempt, which they capitalized on.

I remember that pregame he was gimping around. There was a debate about his playing. I was very surprised when he did.
I know, it was the big game and any player would’ve said they could play, but in my opinion he shouldn’t have been allowed to do so. I wasn’t surprised by the error and felt terrible for him. It’s to his credit he never tried to explain away his error, but always took the blame.

Steve Bartman should NOT be on this list.
-Even without all the fans there, Alou still might not have caught the ball.
-Prior on the same at bat threw a wild pitch which allowed the batter to get on 1st (which should have been a red flag to the pitching staff he was wearing down)
-2 batters later, they could have gotten out of the inning on a double play, if their all-star Shortstop didn't pick a horrible time to bobble the ball on the hit.
-And later in the inning, a Marlins player who had been terrible all NLCS got a 3-run RBI to basically ice the game
Bartman isn't the reason the Cubs failed to execute when it mattered the most.

I worked as a sports reporter for newspapers for 12 years and I saw a player in the Indiana high school basketball final 4 (the greatest show in U.S. high school basketball) on Marion High School's team call time out when his team tied the game on a basket with 2 seconds left. There was no need for a time out, but he thought his team was down by 1 point. The opposing team, Broad Ripple High School of Indianapolis (David Letterman's old school, btw) had no time outs left and the final 2 seconds would have ticked off and the game gone into overtime, but a free time out was given them via the Marion player's mistake, and when they came out, Broad Ripple hit a 57-foot shot (17.4 meters) to win the game. Marion was the great powerhouse in Indiana boys basketball, winning five state titles between 1975 and 1987, by far the greatest run by any high school boys team in the state's history. But that game in 1980 was the one that got away.

Bartman was overblows. There were several fans reaching for the ball it just happened to touch him first. No guarentee Cubs were winning a WS. Same with Buckner, if he makes the play it's tied. No guarentee Boston wins.

I think Fred Merkle gets a bit of a bad rap and didn't deserve the nickname. Technically, that was the rule, but the crowd was all over the field. The ball re-appeared from the crowd, and nobody was entirely sure it was the real ball that he was thrown out with.

In 1994 at Bristol Motor Speedway at a Nascar Busch Series race. Mark Martin while leading, pulled down pit lane on the last lap. The race was under caution at the time anf Mark mistakenly thought the race was over. He needed to stay on the track for another 150 feet to finish. He wad credited with seventh I believe.

IMO you picked the wrong Leon Lett game. That strip by Don Beebe, while embarrassing, had absolutely no effect on a blowout game. The Thanksgiving Day game where he tried and failed to recover what would have been a dead ball actually cost the Cowboys the game, and made their title run a lot more dramatic than it had to be.

I am a little surprised Anthony Hernandez wasn’t here, but I guess that wasn’t really about sports specifically. Plus his teammates coming out (way) after the fact and saying they weren’t really that shocked.
And for what it’s worth, referring to the US as America is probably due to the US having a national song specifically devoting itself as ‘America’

The Leon Lett play the Cowboys were already up 52-17 so that didn't matter. The one in the snow DID cost the Cowboys the game since Miami had another shot at the field goal. Still didn't matter. The Cowboys won back to back Super Bowls and Leon Lett redeemed himself in the Super Bowl by causing a fumble and a run back for a touchdown to tie the game.
