People should want to meet an ophthalmologist every year or so to check on preventable causes of blindness. They are not there just to cure a disease once it is in an advanced state, prevention is the key to health.

Here in the UK, an optometrist does that. Otherwise, I agree!

What's the difference between an Optometrist and an Optician, in the sense the place I go to both measures my sight and dispenses glasses

Both can measure eyesight, only the Optometrist can dispense glasses as they most likely are Opticians too, and only the Ophtalmologisr can deal with ocular diseases or do surgery on you.

One really needs to see an ophthalmologist after 65 to be sure you don’t have any age related diseases or are getting cataracts.

Going to the Ophthalmologist is not qn experience I would like to repeat. The tests are really intense & worst being the eye drops that dilute the pupils because makes vision very strange. Luckily did not needed any surgery.
