    I love the slap of the old flat belts! I have a Fay and Egan about the same era as this American. It is also a very heavy machine. I was 75 when I bought it 5 years ago at the estate auction of an old carpenter I had known from childhood. Don't know any other history of the machine. Cleaned up but not restored. Someone much younger can tackle that some day.

    You brought it back t life. And since it seem very heavy, turning with it will be really a pleasure for sure. The weight dampens a lot of out of balance woods as you start so many turnings. Thumbs Up!

    I appreciate the hours of time and effort you put into filming and editing this video. I just restored an old Red Rider Wagon for my grandson and had to rebuild 3 of the 4 wood sides milling them out on my table saw out of what I had. Turned out great... but I wasn't trying to film it. The final product and video was awesome. I think you had a good mentor there with you to help guide you and that is what a lot of younger folks are missing in their lives.

    Nice job restoring your lathe. I've watched a fair number of your videos and enjoy them all. I restored a vintage Delta 1460 lathe from the 1940's a few years ago and turn with it often. I fabricated casters for my lathe that don't require modifying the cast iron base in any way. The casters are simple and strong. I could send you some pictures of them if you're interested.

    Great job bringing it back to life! I think of the people who made the drawings, mined and transported the ore, made the molds, poured molten metal, finished and fit pieces... Clearly they had some pride in their work.
    It does seems a wee bit short for you. Might think about putting it on risers. We are taller today than the people of the early 20th century.

    Some Johnsons Paste Wax on those machined flats will both protect and allow your tail stock and tool rest to slide smoothly.

  • @fnordhorn
    @fnordhorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have used some Supper Fine grit Sandpaper on the tail stock (Just a light passing) and the bed of the lathe 800+. Silicon Carbide paper with water comes to mind.
    Put the tail stock part in a lathe and use the paper as the part is turning as for the bed part use a fine sanding block to extra fine steel wool (grade 0000 or 4/0) to polish the bed and any parts that ride on it. As for the head and tail stock clean out the pipe section and use a break hone device to clean and polish the inside. you just want remove any rust and nicks.
    That all said REAL NICE RESTORING JOB
    I restored one i got at the junk yard. Got it for Scrap weight, and it was a metal lathe 36 in bed.

    Nice Job! Only suggestion would be to use the existing switch box as a junction box and mount a new switch where you can get to it easier and faster.... perhaps one of the modern fail safe style switches ( power fails, switch goes to and stays OFF ) so you don't inadvertently have some chunk of wood spinning around and winding you up.

    • @TheducksOrg
      @TheducksOrg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that switch worries me a lot, both in location and belt proximity

  • @kazykamakaze131

    Here is a time saving tip. In the future use 2 in 1 metal paint. Has both primer and topcoat in 1 and will save you half the time to paint the machine. You can either paint it with your compressor or use a brush/roller on these 2 in 1's.

    I have to say, I love this video and I love that lathe. I would love to find one like it. By the way, do your self a favor and buy several of Harbor Freight 4 wheel dollies when they have them on sale for $7.99. I use them for everything and just used 4 to move a huge hutch out of the dining room so that I could put down a new floor.

  • @busenitzcustomwoodworks6768
    @busenitzcustomwoodworks6768 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need to get a grinder with a wire brush on it! I’m curious why the switch is mounted way back behind the leg? Seems like it would be nice to have it handy if something goes south and you need to turn it off? Love to see people restoring these old machines!

  • @andrewmiller8182
    @andrewmiller8182 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work. Once again it is a good usable wood-turning lathe. However, although it may have been worked at some time off line shafting, the remains of some bearings under the wooden shelf suggest to me that it was originally treadle operated.

  • @paulwomack5866
    @paulwomack5866 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you check the headstock bearings? Key part of any lathe!

  • @billp1954
    @billp1954 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The only reason I can come up with for the babbet bearings on the bottom, is that it used to be a treadle lathe. Nice video.

    • @trampster7306
      @trampster7306 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought maybe there was a through shaft to take the feed from the overhead line shaft (maybe on the opposite end to the headstock), with a stepped pulley on the lower shaft to feed the headstock, allowing the different speeds.

    You should invest in a blast cabinet. With a few minor mods,Harbor Freight makes a decent one and it's not too expensive. Also a powder gun and small oven. Great stuff to have when doing restorations on stuff like this.

    Jasco paint removal is rather useful on stubborn paint. Make sure to use eye protection, good breathing protection, long sleeves and thick rubber gloves when using it. Spread it on, wait 15 minutes and start scraping. Can take more than 1 application, but it's a time saver. I was not paid for this comment by the way. But if someone from Jasco reads this...................Ka-Ching is my middle name.
