Well I'll be darned my dad had a treadle lathe that he brought from the Ukraine when he came over in 1930, It was bigger than yours and much heavier, He turned thousands of things over many years and loved that thing. The drive wheel was about 4" wide and had 4 grooves in it. He used a woven belt that I think was made out of raw hide and was round like a cable. The treadle was pinned in the middle like a sewing machine so he could get a kid on the other side to help power the drive. Dad liked to see kids that were busy, lol. Some of my family wound up with it and I think it was destroyed by the idiots. I was not interested in wood working at that time of my life and I'm kicking myself now for letting that lathe get away from me. My dad would be proud if I had that tool now. I still have some stuff he turned.

Very good demo, Nick. I built a version of the treadle lathe that's in one of Roy Underhill's books and used it for years until my knees gave out.

I love the idea of wish bone leg configuration.... Very simple and smart!

I like your video a lot. I have a couple of questions. 1. How long is the strap around the fly wheel. 2 What is the difference between drilling a hole and boring a hole. thanks

try using a rear bicycle wheel. It can free-wheel as the treadle stops. And the belt will stay in the groove.

They are quite light thought, I'd say that wooden wheel has a bit of energy

+beageek2 It looks like it is from the April 2010 issue of Fine Woodworking Magazine. www.finewoodworking.com/workshop/article/treadle-lathe.aspx Although the description in the back issue doesn't seem to mention it. www.tauntonstore.com/finewoodworking-magazine-issues.html

Couldn't you put a cross bar on the far side and attach the treadle, so it's supported on both sides, in order to make it easier to use both legs for power?

if you want to use both legs... might as well convert a bicycle to a turningwheel ;p

You could add a bungi cord the the treadle pedal.
