    Your videos are good. It's far better rather than any regular tourism videos, and every coin has 2 sides.. You don't only show good things about a country, but you're fair enough. Toast.

    I've just returned back from the UK from a trip to Santiago and Buenos Aires and the coast of Chile and absolutely loved it. I was surprised how dry Chile was in this season and how different they are to argentinians in looks, personality, buildings and eating habits.

    In Chile you wont get kiddnaped and the water is as ok as it is in the US, Plus, it's saftier then any major city in the US. Lot of prejudice here. Humidity is neither a problem, the weather in the centre is like southern europe, and in south like norther europe.

      I know right? How different is Chile from other countries in South America! America (the continent) is beautiful and so different everywhere you go, I don't understand why Americans (the People from the US) talk of America as if it were just one country!

      This is annoy for me, too. Really, I believe that is the reason because in many places are called "Green-go's" (gringos). Why the "gringos" took the name of "Americans"?... That is like rob a trademark, there was a continent called AMERICA before that they arrived to this side of the world.
      Well, I seem that the problem is maybe due to the name of "United States of America", there are many small countries (states) in a big country "United", and they take their lastname "America" to called himself with this lastname.
      Anyway, is so injurious for the others 500 millons people in the America Continent.

    I've lived in Buenos Aires for the last 32 years (I'm originally from NYC, and I moved here when I finished college in 1982). I can honestly say that I know this city very well, so I'm puzzled by some of your comments. For one thing, the tap water is safe! And I should know: I've been drinking it for three decades. Then what's this about the rainy season? There is no dry season or rainy season in this part of the world, but just your regular four seasons. What do you mean when you say you've "lived" in Buenos Aires? Did you stay in Buenos Aires for more than a few weeks? I wonder.

    • @trw45q
      @trw45q 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    however if you are going to a club you may want to dress up. Colombians dress up pretty well and consider it a mark of good upbringing. If you go to a more modern city in medellin (where fashion is really the thing) it's good to pay attention to the people who go to clubs... if you are in some back water town that's different.
    btw come to colombia we have something similar to machu pichu in the lost city. It's relatively unknown to tourists. contact me on the weekend so I can look it up for you.

    When are you going to come back to Argentina? I'm here until April, been here 3 times before, never a problem with the water (Venezuela yeah, parasite for a week).
    Let me add some nuances to the top 5's here in the context of Argentina from a view on 9 de julio where I can see the "Estados Unidos" bus station.
    "Hates"
    1) Getting Robbed / Research / Sunblock / Mosquitos
    (Can't say you don't pack in the content, but the generalities you cast over a whole continent, you might as well be saying Canada is like Mexico because we're all part of the same continent).
    Sometimes you get robbed, it just happens, it can also be a numbers game. I'm from MN and I'd rather come here than Chicago, New York City, Miami or Los Angeles because I think you'll get robbed far more often there than in Argentina. But I've been all over the place and Buenos Aires is my home away from home and if I want to take a walk I don't care so much about what direction I head in.
    Research is worth doing, for cultural reasons. Sun block, yeah during the summer in BA the UV goes above 10, I didn't even know that was a thing but I've seen UVI 11 plenty this time of year.
    Mosquitos I'm surprised aren't worse, only time they were an issue is when I left my window open in my hotel when I was staying on 9 de julio at 5 star (word to the wise, stars don't = quality of internet, 1 router for the whole place + mosquitos). Only once in the month since I've been here have I swatted at the buggers and that's because I was hanging out in a park away from where tourists go.
    But all over, don't be surprised to see stray cats and dogs.
    2) Public Transport / Distance Between Cities
    Personally I wish that my state had the transport systems in place that Buenos Aires has. You have the subway, bus, by currency taxi's aren't a bad option and they have airports!.
    If you're concerned about time, take a plane. If you're well to do taking the bus, most of the trips (domestic) are an over night thing. From Buenos Aires to Mendoza (from the east end border to the west), 12 hours straight west, and it's an overnight.
    But if I wanted to bus from Buenos Aires to the border of Colombia and Venezuela, it's 8 days. You basically take the route from the motorcycle diaries.
    In the end it's your itinerary, do your homework. It shouldn't be a reason to hate Latin America.
    3) Language
    I think this is a virtue, I'm learning because I want to learn. Where there's a will there's a way. Or you can always lean on the people at your hostel/hotel I don't have any doubt that would work, you'd just be where all the tourist are. (Go to Recoleta Cemetery after lunch and you'll here English)
    To me the problem was that anybody would try to be as accommodating and in a way it steals the opportunity to fail forward, but you can make it either way it shouldn't be a deterrent.
    You get what you put into it.
    4) Lack of Tourism Structure
    When were you here?!
    Maybe you've been jaded by covering Europe so much...
    I've seen them, I finally searched on your channel and this video was the most relevant.
    5) Weather
    UV Index is 10+ during the summer. Que sera
    Next time the subte floods I'll let you know.
    By the way, you can drink the water in Buenos Aires. When were you here?
    ---
    The Loves
    1) The people
    They're exceptional, when they're friends, they're friends buddy and it's absolutely worth it to hold up your end to know something about their language because you will learn so much in ways you couldn't even imagine.
    2) Natural wonders
    They're all over just like anywhere else, but you have to get outside of the city. As enthralling as it is.
    3) Not overrun with tourists
    Depends on a lot of factors...
    Like if I would have stayed at a hostel on Florida many of my friends would be tourists. You reap what you sow. If you hang out in the tourism scene, then yeah you're going have a different experience here because the tourism industry isn't lacking here.
    It's not like that here where you're painting it as there's no infrastructure, thus no tourism, so it's not overrun with them.
    4) Historic sights
    Really? Out of all of Latin America the first one worth mentioning is Colonia?
    Colonia is a day trip, if you scheduled a week there you would be bored to tears. On the other hand, they do rent scooters, 4x4, etc that you can use to zip along the coast and the roads which to me was a great time.
    But I may have to spend a week there coming up and I'm not all that thrilled it's going to be that long.
    In my opinion I think Argentina has one of the wildest histories, stranger than any fiction I've ever read. It's in the culture, on the signs, in the cemeteries, it's everywhere.
    You won't get anything like Mayan history here though, but probably be able to form your own Masonic puzzle to feel like you're in the Da Vinci Code.
    They kinda went USA on the native american population here. I hear it was Roca's idea, the person on the old version of the 100 peso bill oddly enough.
    5) Laid back and relaxed atmosphere
    I think there's some truth to the idea that the further you get away from the equator the more you have to prepare for the change in seasons.
    YMMV on this one because part of a relaxed atmosphere is you.
    ----
    woltersworld Maybe you should spend more time here because it's like you went to Pheonix and paint the idea that it's that way in New York City. I find that irresponsible like you really don't care what people come away with before deciding on a place to go in Latin America.
    Countries are different here like anywhere else...
    I reckon some of my distaste for this episode stems from the idea that it could have been scenario where if I would have seen this while making a decision, maybe I wouldn't have come here.
    Don't mean to be an SOB about this, but god damn if I were the director of tourism here I'd be outraged by how you can lump everyone into the hate.
    As a subscriber I honestly wonder now about how the accurate the rest of your videos are because I have an idea of how it goes here and god damnit it doesn't shore up with this video.

    • @woltersworld
      @woltersworld  10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      ***** well Ryan these are my interpretations from living around the world for a couple decades so my perspective will be different than others. Not every tourist wants to be fluent in Spanish and not every tourists realizes that there is a reason why you see a lot of police in certain cities. I try and help the best way I can and I do not expect everyone to agree with my point of view. Just as I don't agree with all of your points of view. The larger videos like "latin america' or "USA" love and hates are very much more generalized than the country or city specific videos as I am covering a much larger area therefore it is more of a very top level overview and then we have the city/country videos for more specifics. I wish you a great time in Buenos Aires. I loved living there. A fun place with excellent public transport but not the safest city in the world either so loves and hates abound :) great travels to you and keep having fun in BA!

    Have you guys been to chilé? Im looking into going to that country mainly because ive HEARD its more modern and developed and allegedly safer when it comes to water and other things (obviously no matter where you go you have to smart regardless) and more on par with the US where im from.
    I know it is more expensive but los angeles is all ive ever really known so i think it wont be such a big deal for me to miss out on other cheaper and great countries there.
    Also i know its very beautiful and some sites remind people of northern europe which is way out of my price range and comfort zone.

      +Butternut squash thats weird to me that people bring up womem like theyre tourist attractions to visit the country, especially since theres beautiful and ugly in every country. thats just so weird not used to that where im from and i consider where in from pretty sexist. youre not the first person to say that and it blows my mind that hooking up with women is a reason to travel... i see it kinda like if youre not hooking up in your own country, youre not gonna be hooking up with other girls in a diff country either

  • @woltersworld
    @woltersworld  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    hence why I said it was a generalization. I do the same thing with Europe and north America. certain things hold relatively true. And I did not say it was one homogenous, group... but again some of the issues do hold true throughout the region.

      Another thing you have to worry about is corrupt police, militars and transit guards. Everytime you cross a border of some state or country you will face them and some of them can be nasty in the sense that they will try to get a bribe from you if you look gringo or foreigner. The levels of corruption varies a lot from country to country and from state to state. Central american countries are probably the worst, and here in Venezuela for instance, people is aware that many police officers are just criminals with uniform.

      David Fedeczko hello, it depends which part of mexico you are going to visit, i live in Quintana Roo (south, near Cancun) and here rainy season (and also hurricane season) is from may to october, in November there are not so many rains, but still u can get some because in this area rains mostly the whole year, also in November maybe it's not so warm as if you come in summer (or spring), for example right now we are over 30°C and the humidity makes it worse. The weather is similar in the yucatan peninsula. For other parts of Mexico i cannot help you much, but i think this is the area that it rains the most. Greetings and i hope you enjoy your trip!

    Don't wear expensive clothing? You do know that not everyone in LA is poor,right? There are billionaires,millionaires & a middle class does exist. If you're in the poor areas,no shit. In the US if a tourist were to get lost in a non touristy area where the gov doesn't invest any money, you'd probably get robbed too. Common sense. No clean water except ANYWHERE,except bottled? Ha! My LA friends would have a good laugh at that comment. Some areas lack clean water yes,but to pretend that nowhere

    • @waltero.8957
      @waltero.8957 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Martin Kriletich Yeah, but Argentina is kind of an exception to the rule, just like Chile. Argentina and Chile are the southernmost countries of the continent, so they're usually colder and we have a more template weather. And the sun is not a big deal either, except in the north. I'm from Argentina too and it can get very cold in winter.

    You mean well, but you make a couple of very inaccurate statements. For instance, you say water can't be drunk anywhere; that is clearly not true, in some big cities (for instance in Argentina), tab water is ok. Also you talk about rainy season and provide Buenos Aires as an example. That is not correct. Rainy season can be an issue in the Amazon, but summer in Buenos Aires is not more rainy than summer in New York. You may have gotten a rainy December, but that is not necessarily the average. Then, the sunblocks, come on, you can buy the big brands in South America as well and they work just fine. Again, you mean well, but make some untrue generalizations.

    • @woltersworld
      @woltersworld  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      SpaceCowboy not everywhere, you can drink the water in many places but where many tourists are going it is important to realize that water quality is an issue. And I stand by my sunblock reference :) being a pasty guy from the north... I burn just thinking about the sun ;) thanks for watching!

      @JohnDoe-on8zm 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Often the local people have built up immunities to what is in the water that tourists do not have. It may well be safe for them but not for the occasional tourist.

    • @BIZARROSCOPE
      @BIZARROSCOPE 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John Doe No, buddy, I'm talking about good drinking water, by any reasonable standard. Any big city in Argentina has good water coming from the faucets, it's not a matter of immunity. Sanitary conditions and water availability might be bad in some countries, but not in all. Latin America is a big region, with 20 countries and there are big differences between them. That's why I said the statement was an inaccurate generalization.

    • @JohnDoe-on8zm
      @JohnDoe-on8zm 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      SpaceCowboy I did not get the idea from him that he was saying there was absolutely no safe drinking water in any city. I'm sure there are some, but how does one know which? And do you have proof that people do not get sick from different waters due to immunity issues or are you just saying that as an opinion?

      "If the locals are drinking the tap water without ill effect, there is no known occurrence of giardiasis, and you are going to be staying in one location for four weeks or more, you may want to drink the water to allow your body time to acquire some of the local microbes. Start slowly and let your body adapt." www.independenttraveler.com/travel-tips/safety-and-health/drinking-water-safety

    Man, I'm sorry but you talk about Latin America as if it was a little country. Brazil alone is almost as big as the whole European continent. A single medium Brazilian state as Minas Gerais is bigger than France and by the way: Brasil has 26 states! Now, it's important to say that Latin America has 20 countries besides Brazil. So, Latin America is not this homogeneous picture you've painted.

    it is very generalize. Every country is very,very difference. For example there are cities that are the entire year between 10-25 Celsius, like Bogota super cold all year round. Also if you dress like a tourist, you will get robbed in any country. You have to use common sense, dont tell me you walk with your kids and camera in the streets of Detroit at 12 AM.
