I am late to the party but this has to be one of the most relaxing videos I have ever watched. The Beavers can't help strutting their stuff and the R-985 engine is like a Harley or a Mustang - instantly recognizable. As a sailor of old sailing boats I feel a complete connection - it's the same expensive, unpredictable and potentially dangerous experience but surely so much more so when you take to the air. Thank you so much for this, Paul.
Hi... so glad you liked my video. We were mesmerised by these amazing aircraft. The sound of those engines is incredible.... and the tension on take off... will they actually manage to get airborne before they run out of water. We meant to go for a drive into the mountains that day but ended up watching the aircraft for 3 hours. Regards Paul
I just returned from Anchorage where I spent the weekend on Lake Hood doing an event at the Alaska Aviation Museum. What a thrill to see so many floatplanes coming and going, all set against a stunning mountainous backdrop. I think anyone who’s into aviation should take the time to visit the Alaska Aviation Museum, open 7 days a week, 10-5. Thanks for the great shots and memories.
Man it would be a dream come true for me to have a chance to visit this Airport. Because I love these Airplanes. And I could watch them all day long. And never get sick of it. Not at all.
Thank you for sharing this video. I normally pop in to watch the live web cam on a evening, I live in York. England ... so it is great to see them from a different angle.

This is nuts. I'm sitting here watching the Beaver with the dimensional lumber strapped on the floats and realize I have my feet wedged against the chair legs pushing my toes down trying to lift the Beaver off for the pilot. Then he goes out of sight. WTH did he make it ? You're killin me Smalls.
@@PaulDonovan Having never been there I don't know how its laid out. I see that beaver disappear from view still on the water. I need to get back into this and get my tail wheel rating. Then go for floats.

Hi... Thanks. It was mid June 2018. here is a short video you might find amusing from Lake Hood... th-cam.com/video/ImxEr0Lt-6s/w-d-xo.html regards Paul
Some of them are heavily loaded. Lake Hood has long take off and landing lanes. And yes, water is very draggy. A technique to lesson the drag is to lift a float out of the water once the airplane is planeing ("on the step" in double secret seaplane pilot lingo) to cut the drag associate with the float hull in half. Some other aerodymanic issues are introduced which take some compensation from the pilot.
The airplanes with 2 bladed props and a variable pitch or highly fixed pitched prop typically and maybe an have longer propellor blades then those equipped with three blades. Propellor RPM is measured a the shaft. Ergo, the two bladed prop spins faster at the tips at any given propellor RPM then a three-bladed. Much commotion in the air at the tips. I've "heard" talk of the tips approaching supersonic speeds.
so.. just googled it... "Some floatplanes only have floats, and are only able to land in the water. However, some have floats as well as other landing gear, either built-in or available as an additional option, that allows them to land on a runway" I guess where they typically fly there is always water should an emergency occur.
@@PaulDonovan thank you bro ! I wonder if the got a lever or switch where the pontoons are dropped like bombs and wheels or skis hidden in the pontoons stay attached to plane ?
Airplanes with straight floats can be landed just about anywhere a wheel plan can land. If it is grass, so much the better. Same landing technique. Because of the floats way out in front, if the field you land in is "not prepared" to use an aviation euphemism, a floatplane is less likely to wind up on it's nose. Obviously, if it is amphibious (wheels in the floats) in can land on paved strips or prepared dirts strips as well without the possiblitiy of damage to the bottom of the floats. Now, landing on water with the wheels down in an amphib...you tube search that up.

Those seaplanes seem to have a hard time reaching enough air speed to take off.
Agreed.... we feared that some of them wouldn't make it. I guess there is a lot of drag from those big pontoons in the water. Regards Paul

A lot of them were cessnas but man they are loud! I think it’s because of the bigger propellers on the sea plane version then on the regular verion
