I think they did hint at it. Look at the way Bruce was treating Grayson. He got tired of being in the Bat's shadow, and tired of the way Bruce treated him, and he left. It took awhile for Bruce and Dick to be on good terms, post-nightwing.
This was a very comic accurate depiction. Jason with the tire iron, the duffel bag scene, the tour of Batman’s greatest failures. This was also one of the first time a major character was resurrected in comics. It’s so common now that everyone always forgets how much that impacted the story.
This movie was my very first exposure to Red Hood/Jason Todd and he immigrated became one of my favorite characters of all time. He is the perfect combination of The Batman and The Punisher. But what makes me love him as a character is that unlike other characters in his situation where they would blame Batman for not saving him he actually forgives him, but doesn’t forgive him for keeping Joker alive. He has amazing control over his rage and doesn’t let it corrupt him. This is who he has always been, he’s an equalizer.
If you're at all curious, there have been 4 main Robins and 2 lesser known Robins. Dick was the first, and he becomes Nightwing. Jason is 2nd and he becomes Red Hood. Tim was 3rd, with him becoming Red Robin. And Damian (Batman's biological son) is 4th and the current Robin. Stephanie Brown (Spoiler/Batgirl #3) was also Robin for a little while. And Carrie Kelly is Robin in the Dark Knight comic/animated movies Barbara Gordon, Stephanie brown and Cassandra Cain are the 3 Batgirls, with Kate Kane being Batwoman (She's Batman's cousin). Then there's a newer BatFam member named Duke (The Signal). Harper Row is also another member of the BatFam (Blue Bird). Catwoman and Jim Gordon are also usually lumped into the BatFam, especially since Jim actually controlled a robot Batman for a bit while Bruce had amnesia. And then of course there's Ace, the bat hound. A dog that Batman named after a little girl "villain" who died of an illness
The reason Dick leaves Batman is because he started to grow into his own man. He was becoming a young adult, and began spending time away from Bruce with the Teen Titans alot. Eventually he leaves the nest and takes on the mantle of Nightwing
I say this without any shred of irony, this is my ALL-TIME favorite Batman film. It captures the moral challenges Bruce puts upon himself and the consequences they yield so well. It is a fantastic example of tragic storytelling, and the performances of the entire cast shines so brightly here; DiMaggio is underrated as the Joker, and this is probably my favorite interpretation of the character after Hamill.
@@kylewestlake982 why have them watch that movie next and they don't know the characters. DC animated movies need to be watched in order just go watch it on your own 😅
I still love this movie, Jensen Ackles does a great as Red Hood, Bruce Greenwood's good and would later go on to voice him in Young Justice, John DiMaggio does a Surprising job as The Joker, a surprise Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing, and Jason Isaacs does great as Ra's al Ghul
I love how this shows why Batman would never kill. Even if he did just try to reason with himself that "I'll only kill Joker, just him" is not an option for Bruce. Bruce has a very addictive personality, shown in how driven he is to fighting crime, doing detective, working himself to the bone to the point where he doesn't sleep for days, ect. Also, Dick becoming Nightwing is a combination of getting older and wanting to step out of Batman's shadow by becoming a hero in his own right.
There are some recent animated DC movies but imo this is one of the best DCAU movies and one of the best Batman movies, animated or otherwise!! LOVE this movie so much.
Dick Grayson's split from Batman is best showed in BTAS (Batman the Animated Series). But at it's core he didn't want to become Batman, so jaded and cold. He saw the cowl as a legacy he'd inherit and he didn't want it.
The final scene of Batman, Jason and Joker is one of my favorite Batman animated scenes ever. It has such an emotional punch. The three of them bounce of each other so well. I never forget the final lines of the Joker screaming "You managed to find a way to win... and everybody still loses!"
It would likely be a draw Dick has his experience as an acrobat & the Lazarus Pit enhanced Jason. Plus, both were trained by one of the greatest detective & martial artists on the planet.
My favorite animated Batman film. I love how the Joker is enjoying everything that is happening with Batman and Jason, he is a psycho, DiMaggio did a great job. Jensen Ackles as well.
I recommend watching the 4 films: Son of Batman, Batman vs Robin, Batman: Bad Blood and lastly Batman: Hush. The Hush movie is one of my favorites that shows Batman relationships with different characters including the other main character Catwoman. Batman Bad Blood I was a mix about that one. Overall, the movies will be great to watch through.
In comics Dick Grayson just moved from Robin to Nightwing to be his own thing out of Batman's shadow. It's not anything traumatic aside the regular arguments between the two.
Dick went to college and was spending more time with the Titans than in Gotham. Bruce wanted him to choose and Dick quit. Jason took over a lil while later after Bruce took him in after stealing the Batmobile Wheels. Jason died and then Tim found out who they were and became the 3rd Robin.
The reason Batman recruited Dick Grayson (1st Robin now Nightwing) was so that he didn't spend the rest of his life drowning in revenge like he did. After achieving that and bringing the killer to justice, Dick wanted to continue being Robin so he could help Batman fight crime and not be alone in that fight. Definitely agree that the Jason Todd upbringing was to help him not grow up to be a criminal, which he was in the beginning. The only problem was that it was up to Jason on who he wanted to be, and he unfortunately showed signs that he wasn't quite tolerant of criminals. That's the tragedy. Brought up to be Robin, only to waste it on keeping the same mentality as a criminal. It's why I'd argue that, with the defense that he was young too, Joker got the drop on him easily and got him eventually killed. Comics, however, told the story that he came back as a result of Superboy Prime punching reality that it caused him to come back alive, which I know sounds wacky, but comic books amirite? 😂
47:31min, It's a Full Circle Mindset. At 6-8 years old Bruce Wayne began his voyage to be Batman; after the murder of his parents. At a young age Dick 'Robin' Grayson became Bruce's ward; after the murder of his parents. If you watched 'Batman, The Animated Series' Batman keep Robin's hate/guilt in check by Mentoring and training him. This form of early child training has been a historical constant. Ex. Spartan, Samurai/Ninjas, Zulus, KGB etc.
With Dick Grayson he adopted him so he wouldnt turn out like he did, Batman was the only person to ease Grayson's pain. Jason unfortunately didnt take to Bruce teachings like Dick did as he grew up.
Richard becomes Nightwing because he wanted to be his own man and didn't want to live forever in Batman's shadow and also founded The Titans with other sidekicks that wanted to find independence; Lance dies as Robin on his mission to avenge his adoptive brother Richard, who was injured at the time. Jason becomes Red Hood to own that identity and use it to take revenge on Batman and the Joker (this movie handles things a bit differently); Timothy becomes the Red Robin after Dick Grayson chose Damian Wayne as his Robin, when h e briefly took over the Batman identity (Bruce was thought to be death) and so reinvented himself as the Red Hood; Damian should still be Robin.
@@GreysDen A pre-"Crisis on Infinite Earths" character. Lance Bruner was the orphan of one of Thomas Wayne's friend. When this friend died, Bruce Wayne adopted his son, Lance, and become Dick's adoptive brother; the reason being that Thomas promised to take care of Lance if anything happened to his father AND because Lance was a delinquent and Bruce took him to respect that promise and to keep him from being sent to juvenile detention. Basically Lance was the original Jason, always testing Bruce's patience, but he mostly wanted to be sent to juvenile detention so that he would not be with Bruce anymore and do what he wanted... all of this because his father neglected him and didn't want a new father (the mother died when he was two and the father so always away because of work). Once Bruce learned all of this, he tried to put him straight and had him work for charity and give a hand to Alfred, but Lance didn't like it at all and in an attempt to make him pay (I know, so cruel of Bruce) he discovered the Batcave and learned the truth. So, does he become Robin then? No. He uses that info to make a deal with Grantland Stark, a criminal, basically monitoring and snitching whenever Bruce and Dick are around as Batman and Robin, so the guy can continue committing crimes, Batman doesn't interfere and Lance takes a cut. This backfires because Grantland uses the info to track them and tries to shoot Batman, but Robin gets in the way and gets shot (but doesn't die). Realizing his mistake, Lance takes his brother's Robin suit and tries to avenge him, tracks Grantland, jumps on him, but is shot to the stomach and dies in Batman's arms, after Grantland is incapacitated. In his last moment, Lance reconciled with Bruce and Bruce learns the lesson that despite his best efforts to see the best in people, it can sometimes be too late for them to see the best in themselves.
47:05 Depends on the continuity, but essentially Dick got older and got tired of being Bruce's sidekick and they had a falling out. That's when he became Nightwing and joined the Teen Titans.
Achara thank you so much. This is the first reaction to this movie in particular where someone has knowledge and information about this universe. I appreciate you so much.
Amazo is like Taskmaster. He is created by a scientist named Dr Ivo to copy the powers of any super powered meta-humans or aliens. The thing is he also copies the weaknesses of the super humans so he is vulnerable to kryptonite too.
Batman: Under the Red Hood has been my favorite DC animated movie since the moment I first laid eyes on it. So many of the scenes in this movie either have my blood pumping or my heart breaking, and Jensen Ackles does an amazing job with the voice acting. His take on the character really captured the pain and frustration while still nailing the cocky and comedic moments.
46:53 . . . The answer to why Dick Grayson/Robin turn into the Nightwing is in the episode of Batman the animated series, episode is called “Old Wounds”. . . that episode explains why.
It's asstounding Tim Drake wanted to be the next Robin. 20:48 Batman is wild for getting upset over a broken collar bone. His reasoning is that now he can't be questioned because he's in shock. So question him later, reminding him that he only has one broken collar bone at the moment. It would really suck if he snapped the other one as well. Besides that, presumably Batman took down a number of bad guys too. If he's playing by his own rules, none of them should be in shock. Question one of them.
Batman 'Death In The Family' is one of the best Batman stories not adapted to a live action movie. I loved that DC Comics had a 1-800 number for fans to determine Jason's fate because a lot of fans disliked his character.
A perfect animated film- it tells a great story without you needing to have read a bunch of stuff or watching a bunch of other movies- and the pacing and drama are very well done... And that very last scene just rips your heart out.
I remember when this comic issue came out over some decades ago. It was immediately sold out and couldn't get a copy of it and was only able to buy the 2nd edition print of the issue. Even now it was more valuable than Superman died comic issue. Don't forget to watch&react to the Batman crossover with the TMNT animated movie but also compare it with Amazing Spiderman and the latest TMNT live movie. They all shared the same plot and this was pointed out in HISHE.
Jaby handled the whole robin story in logic very well I’m quite surprised cause every one else does not know how to write it and cant take a risk with the character….. animated it makes it easier and digestible, but live action is why we never have a robin
To be more heartbroken, Jason's death was voted for BY fans. They had the choice when the story came about to vote whether he lives or dies. It really added a lot to him in the long run but god damn! To have the fans vote for his death.
Basically, Dick Grayson becomes Nightwing because he grew up, and didn't want to be in Batman's shadow forever. He wanted to go out into the world and become his own man, his own hero.
@@valeria262 I actually dug that Bruce & Dick had a falling out. Not everything has to be happily ever after, or some kind of smooth and amicable situation. Hell, I like that they took it a step further with "Batman Beyond", confirming that all his protegés were on bad terms with him until reconciling with him in "Return of the Joker" (minus Dick Grayson). It's sad, but ultimately a more interesting story and character dynamic.
They didn't specifically explain why the first Robin left and became Night Wing in this movie, but I think the dialogue exchanges from the two together do a good job at hinting at why.
30:35 This was also explored on the shows 'Arrow' and 'Titans'. Thea Queen and Jason Todd both were brought back from the dead in the Lazarus Pit, but they came back darker versions of themselves.
There is an interactive version of this movie out there where you have multiple endings depending on your choices. I think its called death in the family. Never seen it myself but I am going to.
So here's a fun little fact about the Voice Actor casting. The teenage Jason and the Ten year old Jason are voiced by real life brothers. That's why they have a nearly identical speech pattern. It's only when he's Red Hood that he's voiced by Dean Winchester.....I mean Soldier Boy.....I mean Alec....I mean Jensen Ackles. Also, later on for the Tomorrow-verse animated movies, Jensen Ackles is Batman.
Jason's death scene was a lot heavier in the books. Basically what happened was that Jason's own adoptive mom sold him out to the Joker so she doesn't loose her more comfy life. And all she did was stay in the corner smoking while he was beaten within an inch of his life. And even though he had so many injuries that hindered him from disarming the bomb, he was still trying his best to save her. Which all happened due to Jason finding out she wasn't his birth mom. And when Batman arrived on the scene, he found his mom first, and right before she died, she told Bruce that even though she did such a terrible thing to him and was a terrible mom, Jason was still a hero through and through, then shortly found Jason right after. Granted it also is a factor that isn't touched on nowadays, Jason was actually depicted as a lot more well rounded kid like Dick or Tim, him being more violent growing up was a later addition retcon. Will admit, I wish this aspect of his backstory was told more accurately, so I kinda slightly resent that the modern versions of him make him out to be so violent. Also along with somewhat muddying the water with what Bruce's morality is. For me, it's not that it would be too easy to fall into it if he allows himself to take them out himself, now is that a likely factor? Sure, but to me, the reason Bruce doesn't kill, at least in my opinion, it's that he believes in second chances no matter how far someone may have fallen. Sure he's a brooding man who dresses like a bat, but underneath the darkness is a man with a heart of gold who hopes for the best in people. Who, while like a cop, dealing with it on a daily basis, can see past the filthy surface of Gotham and recognize the beauty underneath.
Thank you for crying. I did it too and thought that something was wrong with me. A lot of people only connect emotionally with Live Action movies and just think of animation as a cartoon. Love you guy's reactions.
Also Jason's resurrection was different originally in the comics and while i completely understand people like the Lazarus pit version the Superboy Prime retcon punch will always be my favorite just from the sheer ridiculousness of it😂😂😂😂
No, no, no. Every Batman story should NOT have the death of Batman's parents in it. That's a waste of time, everyone and their mom knows Batman's parents died in an alleyway, we've seen it a thousand times. Anyone watching a Batman movie that isn't an origin story should know the basics by now, if not, that's on you
In the comics we killed Jason, they had a poll and you could vote on if he lived or died and fans voted for him to die because nobody really liked this version of Robin. Bringing him back in this way was so cool in comics years later.

I think they did hint at it. Look at the way Bruce was treating Grayson. He got tired of being in the Bat's shadow, and tired of the way Bruce treated him, and he left. It took awhile for Bruce and Dick to be on good terms, post-nightwing.
A highly underrated joker, he brings a manic whimsical brutality to the role that is just sensational
Right?? It hasn’t been replicated since
When little Jason says "This is the best day of my life", I tear up every time.
This was a very comic accurate depiction. Jason with the tire iron, the duffel bag scene, the tour of Batman’s greatest failures. This was also one of the first time a major character was resurrected in comics. It’s so common now that everyone always forgets how much that impacted the story.
I really love this Joker. It's sad John DiMaggio hasn't been given the chance to play him again.
I love his Joker portrayal so much that I wish they would give him the mantle. Give him the Hamill treatment.
He did. When they did the retelling/choose your own story for Death in the Family, DiMaggio recorded more lines for the Joker.
@@TrackMaster844 true!
I love this joker because it really captures how absolutely unhinged he is
This movie was my very first exposure to Red Hood/Jason Todd and he immigrated became one of my favorite characters of all time.
He, Punisher, McCall & even Deapool would make a badass team.
"Jason Vorhee?"
"Oh, from Halloween?"
Epic face palm!
I just don't know when the mix-up was better: Achara's, which is also adorable, or the mask mess up in the middle of Baby Driver.
And Carrie Kelly is Robin in the Dark Knight comic/animated movies
Barbara Gordon, Stephanie brown and Cassandra Cain are the 3 Batgirls, with Kate Kane being Batwoman (She's Batman's cousin).
I've always thought that the death of Ace was the saddest scene in anything, movie or animation, with Batman in it.
The reason Dick leaves Batman is because he started to grow into his own man. He was becoming a young adult, and began spending time away from Bruce with the Teen Titans alot. Eventually he leaves the nest and takes on the mantle of Nightwing
Fun fact: the voice actor for young Jason Todd is Vincent Martella who also voices Phineas from Phineas and Ferb.
did that actor also voice Sid from Toy Story? I thought young Jaspn sound just like that character lol
Surprised Jabby hadn't seen this yet!
For reals I expected him to know about this movie
It's weird how he questions Batman's actions regarding Robin when the movie explicitly explains why he did what he did.
Do you think he’s doing an Al Pacino impression? Or, is that in line with the way he acts in other roles?
Jason is from Friday the 13th lol
You guys should watch Flashpoint Paradox if you haven't seen it. It's what the Flash movie should've been.

Dick’s story is very well told in Young Justice on why he doesn’t want to be Robin anymore.
Facts
I still love this movie, Jensen Ackles does a great as Red Hood, Bruce Greenwood's good and would later go on to voice him in Young Justice, John DiMaggio does a Surprising job as The Joker, a surprise Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing, and Jason Isaacs does great as Ra's al Ghul
This movie is up there with Mask of the phantasm.
Definitely better action scenes. If Hamill played Joker the movie would’ve been even better
@@KickinthescienceHonestly, i prefer John Dimaggio.
don’t forget to watch the Superman animated movies!!!
I LOVE this version of Joker. Actually, I really respect Jokers that go out of their way to NOT be Hamill. Like DiMaggio and Kevin Michael Richardson.
Kevin Michael Richardson IS doing his own take of Hamill. He Even admitted it.
@@greyambrosia really? Huh
I think all the viewers would love if y’all went down a DCAU rabbit hole!
Such a good adaptation! Also please please please get Achara to watch Young Justice. She would love it!
Yesss she would!
Dick Grayson's split from Batman is best showed in BTAS (Batman the Animated Series). But at it's core he didn't want to become Batman, so jaded and cold. He saw the cowl as a legacy he'd inherit and he didn't want it.
Bro that's the fucking worst, they separated amicably. Young Justice is a more true to source example of his development to nightwing
The final scene of Batman, Jason and Joker is one of my favorite Batman animated scenes ever.
It has such an emotional punch. The three of them bounce of each other so well.
I never forget the final lines of the Joker screaming "You managed to find a way to win... and everybody still loses!"
Finally, Top 3 Batman movies 👌
7:28 My man Nightwing!! 🙏🏽💪
Red Hood is still alive at the end. He didn’t die. I wish we got a sequel with Red Hood fighting Nightwing. That would be awesome.
Batman: Gotham knight
The Long Halloween part 1 and 2
Batman the killing Joke
Batman assault on Arkham
Justice League dark
Mystery of the Batwoman
the only thing that would have saved jason was voters😭💀
And Jason has no idea that He owes Superboy-Prime for His return
Not on this continuity

@@ProfBrunoClemente lol same mind think alike or "ape together stro - - i mean, smart!"
7:36 Achara is SUCH Nightwing vibes 😄 Jaby is definitely Jason Todd 🙂
In comics Dick Grayson just moved from Robin to Nightwing to be his own thing out of Batman's shadow.
It's not anything traumatic aside the regular arguments between the two.
This is one of my favorite Batman movies up there with Mask of the Phantasm.
You got to watch The Dark Knight Returns part 1&2 after this👏👏👏
That might be a bit risky monetization wise, especially with Part 2 with the topless neo-nazi.
I'd say son of Batman
Bruce Greenwood is my favorite Batman............... after Conroy. His run on Young Justice is perfection.
47:31min,
It's a Full Circle Mindset.
Red Hood is my favorite character since Batman Arkham Knight & Injustice 2 (as DLC, my S-Tier).
With Dick Grayson he adopted him so he wouldnt turn out like he did, Batman was the only person to ease Grayson's pain. Jason unfortunately didnt take to Bruce teachings like Dick did as he grew up.
I love Jensen Ackles who played Red Hood
"Jason Vorhee?"
"Oh, from Halloween?"
My Horror heart just died a little. Reel Rejects' Tara and Roxy, you aren't. :)
There are so many good animated batman movies
Richard becomes Nightwing because he wanted to be his own man and didn't want to live forever in Batman's shadow and also founded The Titans with other sidekicks that wanted to find independence;
Lance dies as Robin on his mission to avenge his adoptive brother Richard, who was injured at the time.
Jason becomes Red Hood to own that identity and use it to take revenge on Batman and the Joker (this movie handles things a bit differently);
Timothy becomes the Red Robin after Dick Grayson chose Damian Wayne as his Robin, when h e briefly took over the Batman identity (Bruce was thought to be death) and so reinvented himself as the Red Hood;
Damian should still be Robin.
Who's Lance?
Achara saw the arkham knight's storyline so she knows while Jaby be sitting there clueless.
alright, never mind. I just went a little further and he figured it out right away.
47:05 Depends on the continuity, but essentially Dick got older and got tired of being Bruce's sidekick and they had a falling out. That's when he became Nightwing and joined the Teen Titans.
The voice of Bender from Futurama, plays Joker in this movie.
Now you should watch "The Dark Knight Returns"
Batman: Under the Red Hood has been my favorite DC animated movie since the moment I first laid eyes on it. So many of the scenes in this movie either have my blood pumping or my heart breaking, and Jensen Ackles does an amazing job with the voice acting. His take on the character really captured the pain and frustration while still nailing the cocky and comedic moments.
Highly recommend *Justice League: Crisis on Two Earth,* it also has one of the best Batman moments.
Him and Owlman …. Chef’s Kiss, perfect.
There is a difference between you and me. We both looked into the abyss.
But when it looked back at us, you blinked.

46:53 . . . The answer to why Dick Grayson/Robin turn into the Nightwing is in the episode of Batman the animated series, episode is called “Old Wounds”. . . that episode explains why.
Aaahhhhhh yaaaahhhh🎉 my favorite animated Batman movie😁😁
Aaww I love it when Achara gets all emotional and sentimental
Jason from Halloween...OUT!!!
Oh yea she did see the cutscenes for Batman Arkham knight, I give her props for remembering 👍🏾
This is such a great version of Jason's back story. It's just so good.
This is the best DC Animated movie PERIOD!
Usually any questioning is time sensitive
Batman 'Death In The Family' is one of the best Batman stories not adapted to a live action movie. I loved that DC Comics had a 1-800 number for fans to determine Jason's fate because a lot of fans disliked his character.
A perfect animated film- it tells a great story without you needing to have read a bunch of stuff or watching a bunch of other movies- and the pacing and drama are very well done...
And that very last scene just rips your heart out.
Ra's always refers to Batman as the Detective. Not as an insult or mocking him.
I wish Nolan had Ra’s do that.
This is one of my favorites. It’s so good and so sad. Jensen Ackles as Jason Todd and Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing are perfect.
I'm always up for More Richard Grayson❤
Jaby handled the whole robin story in logic very well I’m quite surprised cause every one else does not know how to write it and cant take a risk with the character….. animated it makes it easier and digestible, but live action is why we never have a robin
Freaking finally, this is only considered the best Batman animated movie alongside Mask of the Phantasm
To be more heartbroken, Jason's death was voted for BY fans. They had the choice when the story came about to vote whether he lives or dies. It really added a lot to him in the long run but god damn! To have the fans vote for his death.
Jason's death was the biggest defining moment of Batman's character development in the comics, way back in the '80s and '90s
Basically, Dick Grayson becomes Nightwing because he grew up, and didn't want to be in Batman's shadow forever. He wanted to go out into the world and become his own man, his own hero.
Yes, the dcau did a big disservice to their separation which was amicable
"Jason Voorhee?"
"Oh, from 'Halloween'?"
As a slasher fan, both of those sentences caused me immense pain.
Under the Red Hood, The Flashpoint Paradox and the Spider-Verse sequels are easily the best animated superhero films of all time.
My partner
My soldier
My fault 😢
Greatest line in the comic book of all time
Thank you for crying.
Anyone watching a Batman movie that isn't an origin story should know the basics by now, if not, that's on you
Chill bro I get it I feel your pain I think there were joking
The Red Hood was the monicker Joker used before falling into the Ace chemicals vat.
In the comics we killed Jason, they had a poll and you could vote on if he lived or died and fans voted for him to die because nobody really liked this version of Robin. Bringing him back in this way was so cool in comics years later.
