Very well articulated. Hope things get back in balance in few years when we realize we are trading patience, focus, happiness for short, addictive content and consciously move away from it. And get back to enjoying proper craft, art, books .

Exactly! I strongly believe that short form content is changing the way we consume other content too. We are used to seeing something new every few seconds while scrolling social media and we are subconsciously seeking the same while watching movies or web series too. We need something that jolts us at least every few minutes. The higher ‘rate of revelation’ (the pace at which the story moves forward) the more engaging the movie. Keeping out star-driven movies, this might be the reason why thrillers have a better success rate than movies of other genres.

    Very insightful thoughts.
I feel the storyteller got more avenue to tell his/her story in today's world. He or she can pre decide where the story can travel (OTT, youtube or theatre) the way forward is co-exist together.
About audiance patience or in general, the pandemic made huge impact on everyone life. I feel last decade or so we didn't evolve well (women excluded) it's like you driven by narrative or hashtags. In large scale this impacted lot of stuff in our day to day life.
Like hemanth rao said, cinema has become 5th or 6th entertainment in last decade.
I remember post lucia you with couple of other directors started doing audiance engagement, Q&A to build audiance base and with thought what more we can give to ticket buyer. If possible pls start townhall again. Thank you.

No sir , it's simple that people have widend their perspective for cinema after they have watched world cinemas, they need that quality of writing and direction. Many are failing in writing.. only the trailer or teaser or poster looks promising but when you watch the movie it's same old thing. Most of the movies are like that.

I understood your thoughts, and that made me to express my thoughts, I am 23 year old and I fall into the category of young audience you mentioned, whatever you have mentioned is yes, it is true but I think you are viewing it from a single perspective, yes the audience is craving the quick change, and what change does is, it keeps the evolution going, and we humans are not in a place to decide the rate of change is overspeeding Or not, the only thing we can do is to try to know at what stage of evolution we are in, and I think we are all in the stage of evolution where everything is conneced, web what we call it as, like a single short video is Commucating many different things to different consumers, like there is education, music, motivation, comedy and many things in a single video, and people are taking what they find in it, and if we want to serve righly and also get succeed in it, we also should start getting connect with each other, see the political evolution has reached a stage of democracy means each and everyone is involved in decision making for themself, so the same thing can be followed else where also, It really requires a lot of words to describe exactly what I am trying to say, if you see some truth in my thoughts, give me a opportunity to communicate in a simple, practical way with you, who knows it may help me Or you or something else

Films are made to a niche audience , so that commercial success is guaranteed.
    Audience suffer from attention deficit.
Audience also has an option of avoiding theatres altogether and opting for OTT at its convenient time and place, where browsing caters to its crazy attention deficit !
So along with hitherto concerns of Content and Form, film makers have to be engaging with creative narration.
Screenplay must hold the attention of the fleeting audience somehow !

Pawan, I don’t know if you will read this, but you have nailed it with your analysis. However, I fear this might lead you to question your filmmaking approach and even doubt your own potential. When you made Lucia, many in the audience felt it was ahead of its time, they didn’t watch it in theatres but praised it later after downloading it from torrents. With Dhoomam, the audience rejected it, calling it an outdated script, and preferred to watch such content on OTT platforms.
Unfortunately, the traditional cinema approach doesn’t always work anymore. Larger-than-life, fantasy, and no-brainer films often have the edge. I watch movies every weekend in theatres for the experience, which I simply don’t get from a laptop. As a hardcore film lover, I have noticed a pattern: the first 10 minutes of a film need to hook the audience, the interval block should be mind-blowing, and the last 20 minutes are make-or-break. If you can master this structure, the film will likely generate strong word-of-mouth and achieve the success it deserves.

  • @sunilravish1
    @sunilravish1 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Hey Pavan - Your views and thoughts are intriguing. In my view, audiences have always looked at content as a means to escape reality or reinforce their reality and, in the process, educate or entertain themselves. Instagram Reels and YT Shorts has given quick access to escape reality multiple times daily. Having said, the audiences have probably never consumed such a 5-10hr web series at a stretch. It seems to me the audience switched modes. While watching reels/ shorts, they know they need to keep the phone down when an office call rings or a kid calls at home. But while watch web series or movies they are fully open to be invested for several hours. Within that script, innovations like what Breaking Bad attempted (high open and close points for every episode) or what Jailer did ( still a lot of slow burn-in the interval scene and crown stealing scene) both work. Insta reels are written to create relatability and that quick laugh, movies should not adapt the Reels style. I think the magic of long format should remain intact ( ofcourse with innovations to capture audience attention within that) What do you think?

  • @factcheck35
    @factcheck35 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    My 2 cents:
    - Audiences come to theatres to experience cinema, not to just watch it.
    - Unique characters give us an experience which stays with us for quite some time, if not for ages. Even a wafer-thin story brings people to theatres, if the characters are written well AND the scenes are new
    - Animal was a slow paced cinema that was over 3 hours. Characters were quirky there, scenes were fresh. Duration didn't really matter there, because experience was new
    - Saripodha Sanivaram had quirky characters, but the scenes were at least 15 years old. So, it didn't do as much as it was expected to
    - 30 seconds/ 1 minute theory is totally untrue. Human mind isn't a machine, it understands what to expect out of a 2h 30 mins movie. If you fail to engage them for 20-30 mins, that is when people slowly start getting restless
    - For example, Manjummel Boys had a flat first 30 minutes. Yet, people loved what followed, and the rest is history!
    - Bottomline is, entertain people. They will make your cinema a blockbuster!

      Totally agree....
Wanna add one more point here...

@@akshayr6281 exactly! Filmmakers should not over analyse viewers’ taste. It changes with time. If your script is outdated, you should fix that first.

Sir, what about the segment who like the old school way of storytelling in cinema. That slow character introductions- prepping the audience for the narration- main story- holding on to the one emotion or two emotions of the main story- subtle twists.
I think the old form of film making will be a breath of fresh air amidst all the fast paced/ new age movies. I feel ibbani tabbida ileyali has that in it and I’m very much planning to watch it in theatre. I will only know it once I’ve watched it.

  • @akshayr6281
    @akshayr6281 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

I wanna experience the film in theatre.
    As per my understanding ,
a scene should connect to audiences..
And i had this strong feeling that
"Audience don't know exactly what they want....
Anything that surprises them will entertain them, so surprise them. Excite them."
For Pawan sir : You are known face to Karnataka, even for outside the state.. you have face value....
Sir, Even if u do a low budget film, for OTT, by utilising new comers, genuine artists, with a genuine audition.
I had this strong feeling that, people will watch it, and also it does a good business.
Bring back some banger like lucia sir.!!

Hi Pawan sir, hope this message finds you well. I really see an idealist and idealistic thought which isn’t totally gone and I find it is a very hopeful sign for us. I see great observations and I find them reasonable yet there are few elements that I want your insights on..
    - when we talk about filmmaking, wouldn’t you agree that the most fundamental element of it is still the same? Being a director one needs to be an excellent decision maker when it comes to decide what is best for the cinema as a whole. Don’t we see that most of the directors now behind dealing with technical know how than why this piece has to be the cinema?
    - Talk about the technology- The current problem unlike the old days is technology overpowers the creativity. There was very limited technological advancement yet because of their creative process and artistic enrichment, they used the technology wisely to fulfill the need for cinema. Now, technology dominates the writing. The basic element has always been good writing; finding an intangible and unseen light that becomes the reason for your tomorrow’s nostalgia. I think the writers are failing to create or give a space for that mischievous element get created by itself
    - Makers now decide on the form of constructing the story than seeing through the writing and let it decide the form by itself.
    - Finally, we have constantly failed to make audience fall in love with the character. Characters aren’t complex or nuanced enough to engage the audience and if we make that happen, the pacing of the cinema is the least bothered element across all generations including GenZ.. I hope I get to discuss further with you on this. Thank you!

    • @directorpawan
      @directorpawan  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

all the points you have mentioned are insightful. Filmmaking is a complex art form... and its takes many attempts to get somewhere. Where do we give a filmmaker an opportunity to try creating something honestly without the market pressure and demands... and then learn from it and make the next one. We are writing off creators after one film which doesn't work. So... everyone is trying to use the formula of what has worked to play it safe... it is very rarely someone goes off the beaten track and finds success. The system we have in place can easily burn out creators with potential. So we are al clapping n hooting for the Box office numbers but not for the craft. Atleast a marginal number of the population which caters to the financial investment should look into Craft and not BO numbers.

@@directorpawan thank you sir. Fairly put and it’s true about the current fate of filmmakers and the attitude of the producers and the audience. It’s also very unfortunate that the medium itself is such a costly one. When art and creativity takes precedence over numbers, a lot can happen, just like the producers saying in my dreams, “we shouldn’t aim at MAKING money; money should just HAPPEN.”

Traditional film making was carrying one or two emotions for 2 to 3 hours.
With handheld devices in just a few minutes there are at least 10 to 20 different emotions being seen, which is actually bad for humans.
If a movie showcases one or two emotions, it has to register it very strongly otherwise it has to show many emotions which are not doable by a normal human being. This is my observation from the past few years.

Now to watch movie in theatre 1. people want to feel the highs and lows in screenplay every 15min or big plot twist. otherwise they will decide watch in OTT. without theatrical success OTT will not come for small movies 2. whoever mixes love/comedy/action/crime/sadness/songs well within a good story also succeeds. 3. whatever you have told in the video, lucia ticks all the points and both the points i mentioned. 4.simple point is every scene should consist of either drama/laugh/sadness or big curiosity hook for rest of the movie.

I don't think so .. people watched fast paced movies like kgf and also people liked maharaja and 96 kind of movies i only believe make chtranna add some kadle bija I mean some high moments at every 10-15 min only kadle bija also be boring and only chitranna also be boring now days directors job is to make chitranna with balancing the ingredients 😂

Pawan sir, Even big brand names can't guarantee a movie's success nowadays. Directors who write beautiful dramas are also not always succeeding. I think writers should incorporate at least one psychological aspect, like innocence, nostalgia, or violence, along with good writing

Indian Cinema is nearing 100 years. The content created in all these years will obviously empty the barrel and directors have to create something new. Along with this, more no. of content creators force you to increase the speed of the making. Otherwise the same idea might be used somewhere else before you publish.
One thing is constant. For any work to be a masterpiece, it has to be good frame by frame and in full.

I see where you are coming from, but disagree partly. People do appreciate immersive experiences - Charlie, GGVV, SSE are examples of slow/old school cinema finding traction. The only thing is some popular names should be associated with it...absolute newbies can't get away with it. A movie like Ulidavaru Kandanthe would have enjoyed a much better run today...as people are more exposed to innovation and plurality. Pacing issues can be mitigated insofar as the trailer sets expectations correspondent to the overall film.
As for stories around 'mature love' finding few takers, well, a beginning has to be made - perhaps, with modest budgets, established names and a marketing strategy that sends constant feelers to the film's target age group and its neighbours.

Theatrical experience bagge heliddu anthu thumba nija , I watch atleast 5 films a month , and everytime, I get annoyed with ringtones , and people doesn't even care and talk so loud . And children below 5 must not be allowed at all , they cry a lot and ruin our experience.

Bro don't think too much, as per me
There is no formula to make successful film, and every successful film has various reasons for its success,
Ya I agree for big star film there is market recovery, apart from that if you need big comercial success from limited budget and starcast,
First thing the film must be 1,comercial
    2, engaging
    3, suitable screenplay
4,it should experience the audience something new with entertaining,
Now kanthara, manjumel boys done that
long back ur lucia also done that.

I feel nothing rewired kind of things happened just directors need to create more livable scenes with different perspectives . Nowadays actors bringing personal outside attitude in the films through dialogues , punches in fact acting skill is going down . actors should live the character that's what needed. Quality of film making is going down which includes stories, acting skills.

Please do a movie on struggles of a middle class man. Mainly the influence of income tax burden on him.
Because, as per data analysis only 5% of Indian population pay tax. Out of which majority are from income group.
This middle class person not getting benefitted from the govt in any sort even though the whole nation burden is on him.
Only upper class like business tycoons and lower class are benefitted. Mostly farmers.
Farmers are getting benefitted more than anyone. They get tax free status.
What happens if am income group middle class people switch over to agriculture. Then from whom will take the burden of the nation
Please do a movie on middle class person struggle to uphold the financial status of the nation.

I am a TH-camr i have another channel and you are right i am also an editor we edit videos to make it look more like a reel like changing scenes every 10 to 30 second, in the middle part of the video we keep it more detailed and before ending video we again do the same trick of changing scenes and adding interesting scenes or talk, this way we can retain audience by playing with his mind, the goal is NOT to make the video boring but interesting, KGF was the best example of how we must edit a movie or Video.

I agree or have shared the same thought , for example when I went to watch "sapta sagaradaache ello"(both on 1st day ) expecting it would be a serious drama & director would want the characters to pass through us to feel the whole thing ,I will forever say that is amazing movie passing that bar is not easy it will take time ,but almost many people around me or majority who watched hated because it is slow, boring, nothing mass type or comedy etc ,I just typed what you said lol,i want to write or speak about this but I think not many share the same thought or have same taste in movies, music etc ,I don't know why I typed all this ,just venting I guess ,but nenu ole drama adre madu guru there are people but as you already know yest Jana idare anta may be,ella andre raj b Shetty heldange 1 movie to make money 1 for passion/art or for his soul

There is a certain repetitiveness to SSE, with all those jail scenes, which gives it a sort of stagnant feel and curtails its appeal. Its slowness is not the problem, Garuda Gamana was slow too, but people lapped it up. Amruthavarshini is a great example of how you can be slow, yet never repetitive or stagnate.
Still, SSE (Side A) making 25 Crs should give hope to filmmakers like Pawan to experiment.

@@alok8582 Garuda gamana had violence/sick music & that one scene transition part in it that's why the movie got a good reviews from average fans ,even raj b Shetty knows & that was a commercial movie if you as him but other toby & Swathi mutthina male haniye was a closer to his art non-commercial (which wants to do every movie but obviously not good on financial part)SSE jail scenes were core part of the movie which hemanth rao wanted the audience to go through feel the characters pain or suffering or worst case ATLEAST empathize with him,I would d!3 on that hill saying both SSE were landmark movie ,maybe someone WILL replicating those 2 movies but passing that bar or going Parallely seems impossible in our country, yes I have seen (not Indian movie obviously)some solid movie with very basic story but taking audience with the characters with such good screenplay, hemanth rao man serious talent dude we should support or protect him at all cost or will lose a artist ,dude is something else & amruthavashini audience timeline was different ,i can't believe you compare Garuda gamana with SSE both are incomparable to each other & what are the repetitiveness you saw or think ?I will break it down why & the reason it needed
