I will say that both versions are the pick but Generations is way better. The same tune, the same sounds, small changes and you can hear lyrics way better than original. I can't wait for Shadow Generations version.
It's interesting that this song fits both Sonic and Shadow almost perfectly without changing the meaning of it too much. For Sonic, it's about how he knows his friends are always there to support him, but also his fear of loosing them that he kinda blocks out besides certain circumstances. For Shadow however, it's his fear of what happened to Maria and thinking back on her dying wish knowing that she's still there to support in some way, even after her death. I see this as yet another showing of Sonic and Shadow being identical as much as they are opposites.
The older I get, the harder this song hits, and the higher it goes to my top favorite all time Sonic Songs. Its eerie, atmospheric, transformative lyrics and beat just give off that timelessness.

"I'm gonna be desperate" as in take drastic and reckless measures to stop the Biolizard (Shadows biological sibling) from destroying the earth, which Maria told him to protect. He love Maria like a sister. She was his light ("lead me out with you light") you can't have shadows without light. And since there is shadow there is always hope(light). I hope I explained it well enough.

I think the original is much creepier because of instumentation and the fact that you can't hear the lyrics, so I prefer it
