Hey guys! As a local in kadıköy I really appreciate the fact that you guys visit here as well! Most tourists only visit Taksim and Sultanahmet and they miss out so much... Like you said, Kadıköy is more chill and more of a local place since taksim and sultanahmet is filled with tourists mostly. Also in kadıköy there are more parks, green, and nature .Young population hang out and have fun in cafes, restaurants, parks, and bars as well. Also there is another version of İstiklal Street in here too, called ''Bağdat'' Street. It is like a mini version of Avenue des Champs-Élysées ! Anyways, Love from Turkey!
"Kebap" is the general name of the process of cooking meat, which is grill on charcoal. So it's not "kebap" nor "shawarma". It's "döner kebap". There are many other kebaps, and "shawarma" is the Arabic version of döner kebap.

I am always again surprised to see how tourists enjoy the cheap street food in central areas of İstanbul like Sultanahmet or Taksim. There is certainly good food in Turkey (although the taste and quality of ingredients is generally somewhat lower than in the past because of agricultural industrial production being dominant), but I know few Turks and foreign residents who would still eat with pleasure döner or kumpir from these street corner places. Cheap meat of unknown origin is used, sometimes even smelling badly. Next time try the more classy restaurants, and you will see what Turkish kitchen is.

I think we spent around ~$50USD just on food per day but can definitely find cheaper options, especially on the Asian side. We didn’t really take taxi that much, mostly public transportation
