If I approach an ATM, and I find anything off or not as expected, including another individual just “hanging out” in the vicinity, I will simply go find another one. A little bit of situational awareness will help prevent you from becoming a victim.

I go to my bank drive through atm, not other sketchy locations. I wd enough cash to spend , to avoid using debit card leaving data everywhere. Some businesses charge extra for cards , unknown to us….cash still is safest payment. Rarely use cc unless for bigger purchases, but people don’t realize a thief can drain $ leaving us in huge debt, forget about tiny rewards points bc it’s not worth it.

This is such an easy fix that the banks can fix within 1 minute, globally. All they need to do is to make sure that if you are using contactless for withdrawing out cash, you can only do it once and the session automatically closes out.

@@sugipulaboule9don't come to the UK then because most banks don't have cashiers these days, though staff will usually help you use the ATMs. Another trend is that of shops, bars, restaurants etc going cashless. This was brought in via the back door during lock down restrictions. I generally won't use them but in a few years time it will be everywhere. World governments like the idea of a cashless society, it helps them gain access to people's private lives and more importantly it will destroy cash in hand payments for services which will increase tax revenue. I personally am totally opposed to the idea. The more you use a bank card or banking app the more chance it will be compromised and I don't like the idea of my government being able to snoop on my private spending habits either. If you still do things the old way in the States hold on to it for as long as you can.

Not that we have so much money to go around, but we also kept a couple of accounts in our former state active which are entirely different organizations than the accounts in our new state. All told, there's quite a bit of insulation between all of them.

I think the biggest problem with contactless ATMs is that they require your PIN to be entered more than once in a session. This is giving several chances for your PIN to be shoulder surfed.

The chip reader is more secure than the magnetic card reader and you can’t get skimmed by a criminal’s skimmer that’s been attached to the ATM or gas pump. Gas pumps end the transaction when you put the pump handle back. Grocery stores and retail locations end the transaction after the single tap. The ATM is a special case and I must admit that I pull cash for the cleaning lady and have no memory of how I end the transaction. I just take my money and go. Yikes!

    • @victortoombs4754

    • @michaelkearney7923
      @michaelkearney7923 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@victortoombs4754 here's a little more.
Chip cards are less vulnerable to skimming than magnetic stripe cards, but they are not completely safe. Here are some things to know about chip cards and skimming:
      Shimming
Criminals can use a technique called shimming to capture card information from chip cards. Shimmers are devices that can be installed directly into card readers to copy chip data.
      Tampering with card readers
Fraudsters can tamper with legitimate card readers to skim card information.
      Contactless pay
Contactless pay is considered the safest way to use credit cards.
      Protecting yourself
To protect yourself from skimming, you can:
Inspect ATMs, POS terminals, and other card readers before using them
Pull at the edges of the keypad before entering your PIN
Use ATMs in well-lit, indoor locations
Be especially alert for skimming devices in tourist areas
