If I approach an ATM, and I find anything off or not as expected, including another individual just “hanging out” in the vicinity, I will simply go find another one. A little bit of situational awareness will help prevent you from becoming a victim.

Going while the bank is open, DON'T use the ATM TAP FEATURE if someone is in the same ATM room with you!!! If the standard method to use your card in the slot works, make sure to close the transaction by taking your card out and getting a receipt from the machine, DO NOT USE THE TAP FEATURE!!!

I go to my bank drive through atm, not other sketchy locations. I wd enough cash to spend , to avoid using debit card leaving data everywhere. Some businesses charge extra for cards , unknown to us….cash still is safest payment. Rarely use cc unless for bigger purchases, but people don’t realize a thief can drain $ leaving us in huge debt, forget about tiny rewards points bc it’s not worth it.

This is such an easy fix that the banks can fix within 1 minute, globally. All they need to do is to make sure that if you are using contactless for withdrawing out cash, you can only do it once and the session automatically closes out.

    • @Straightdeal

If you ever see any car with a driver and a laptop, especially near ATM, be cautious. Card skimming is worked by bluetooth and bluetooth means thief is nearby. @@sugipulaboule9don't come to the UK then because most banks don't have cashiers these days, though staff will usually help you use the ATMs. Another trend is that of shops, bars, restaurants etc going cashless. This was brought in via the back door during lock down restrictions. I generally won't use them but in a few years time it will be everywhere. World governments like the idea of a cashless society, it helps them gain access to people's private lives and more importantly it will destroy cash in hand payments for services which will increase tax revenue. I personally am totally opposed to the idea. The more you use a bank card or banking app the more chance it will be compromised and I don't like the idea of my government being able to snoop on my private spending habits either. If you still do things the old way in the States hold on to it for as long as you can.

At 5:14 he finally mentions that they need to have _shoulder surfed_ your PIN for this scam to work! (Unless there really are some rogue ATMs that don't require you to reenter your PIN for each transaction in the session).
I think the biggest problem with contactless ATMs is that they require your PIN to be entered more than once in a session. This is giving several chances for your PIN to be shoulder surfed.

The chip reader is more secure than the magnetic card reader and you can’t get skimmed by a criminal’s skimmer that’s been attached to the ATM or gas pump. Gas pumps end the transaction when you put the pump handle back. Grocery stores and retail locations end the transaction after the single tap. The ATM is a special case and I must admit that I pull cash for the cleaning lady and have no memory of how I end the transaction. I just take my money and go. Yikes!

      @@victortoombs4754 here's a little more.
Chip cards are less vulnerable to skimming than magnetic stripe cards, but they are not completely safe. Here are some things to know about chip cards and skimming:
      Shimming
Criminals can use a technique called shimming to capture card information from chip cards. Shimmers are devices that can be installed directly into card readers to copy chip data.
      Tampering with card readers
Fraudsters can tamper with legitimate card readers to skim card information.
      Contactless pay
Contactless pay is considered the safest way to use credit cards.
      Protecting yourself
To protect yourself from skimming, you can:
Inspect ATMs, POS terminals, and other card readers before using them
Pull at the edges of the keypad before entering your PIN
Use ATMs in well-lit, indoor locations
Be especially alert for skimming devices in tourist areas

@jmurphy6767 yes, with the contactless Atm I've used you initially enter your PIN then you have to enter the PIN again for each transaction that is moving any money.
I've only used it contactless 2 or 3 times because the additional PIN entries negate any convenience of the contractless function!
Also I feel that having to enter your PIN more than once is giving shoulder surfers multiple chances to get your PIN.
I don't believe the security flaw stalked about in this video actually exists except, perhaps in a limited number of ATMs that _may_ exist (but probably don't really) that don't require the PIN to be reentered for each transaction.
Maybe what's missing from this video is that there also has to be camera surveillance of your PIN or shoulder surfing of your PIN so that the person moving to the ATMS when you walk away, actually has your PIN so they can take over your session when you walk away and make further transactions on your account, using that PIN.

Better still leave if someone is crowding you

I put most of my daily expenses on ONE single credit card that has fraud protection. When needed, may be once a month, I only use the ATM inside the bank. When I’m outside of my house, my laptop and phone come with me to the ladies room. Don’t give the bad persons temptation. Would you give whisky to an alcoholic?

Get cash out at PO, pay cash for everything. Use it or lose it.

I’m not dumb enough to take advice from a stranger who walked up behind me at an ATM.

All ATM’s have cameras so they should have video of “glue boy”

    Good info. Thank you.
For me I usually go to the bank teller and not to the Atm coz of those “safety” issues.
