@@iamryan4130 this is hilarious, I actually just worked with him yesterday and got to drive his car around, he’s at 372,XXX miles, the hybrid system is still all original, all we did for him was an oil change and rear diff service. The battery is still holding up well and the V8 engine up front doesn’t knock or burn any oil, and even with that many miles the 600hL still flies

      @goldencosmonaut 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@iamryan4130 in my opinion I think it’s because they do a better job making smaller engines, their inline 6 is indestructible. The v8s have too much tech and too much plastic so something failing is a matter of when. They design vehicles with the intent of components failing. Lexus makes good v8 engines, great ones but they tend to be less reliable than their v6’s and 4cyls.

We bought an 07' LS460 last year with 92k. The original owner did a great job of having all Recalls and TSBs taken care of as well as maintaining the interior and exterior finishes. The only thing that my mechanic could find wrong with the car was that it was a little down on horsepower and throttle response. My mechanic cleaned the air intake system and the mass airflow meter for $80 and the engine now runs very strong with snappy throttle response. Other than that, we haven't had to repair anything, just oil and filter changes. Excellent car. Super comfortable seats and ride. Accelerates fast when you want it to.

Just got a 2007 LS 460L and couldn't be happier, air suspension isn't too bad once you look into it, easy to upgrade to aftermarket air or use a controller to adjust ride height with data systems, even has the link adjustment where you can lower it on the factory air settings as well, and it's easy to convert over to a traditional four-loader system, I like the fact that I have the option to stay air or easily convert

The brake actuator issue may be related to H2O contamination of the brake fluid and corrosion within the actuator if the fluid is not flushed regularly. Brake fluid will attract H2O over time. Regular brake fluid flushes will minimize H2O within the fluid. Many owners and many mechanics ignore this maintenance.

12:30, re sunshield, get some 760gsm white artist board and tracing paper. Trace the windscreen outline. Cut the tracing paper in half, top to bottom, slightly larger than half the window size (make some size adjustments, if needed, before cutting by checking the area around the windscreen inside the car). Transfer this to the board, cut two pieces. You will then have two 'halves' for the inside of the windscreen: slide the one in from the left, and the other from the right, they overlap in the middle, flip down the sun visors. Try to park facing south. The heat and UV are kept out the car, off the dash, console and front seats. When not in use, store behind the front seats, or in the trunk if carrying passengers. I've made one for all my cars since 1989.

I paid 6000.00 straight cash for 2008, black on black. I was told by seller , an honest person in my opinion the car will need the dreaded actuator and that is reason to get rid of the car.
Bought it anyway. I am a tree shade wrench and will replace the actuator myself and gravity bleed it for couple of days if it need be. Yes it will be couple of gallons of brake fluid but so is life.
The one thing to watch while bleeding is not to introduce any moisture into system, kinda pita but easy does it, And then take it to the dealer for programming. This ought to save me thousands.
Some have had dificulty getting the thing licensed so they can drive it to the garage even, to replace the actuator. There is tempoary fix looking back at you when facing the dash, did I say dash? Get creative..... And yes it is temporary, right! An no need to mess with programing either, just common sense and a screewdriver..
The one concern I noticed while pulling the wheels is the Jacking Points on the body, they leave much to be desired for. Especially in rust belt areas, where I am at. They suffer from sloppy application of jacks and easy fold to curbside or from.I will clean the area of paint to the bare metal and weld small reinforcement into them, repaint and have a beer. Just got me one of the Vevor air jacks and that thing is a hoot, well worth the money (it was 150.00 cnd. That jack beats the factory scissor one by far.
Other than that the car is definitely worth the money I spent. Only one thing I would add, the factory 18" wheels on this car are really heavy. Will go aftermarket with something more jazzy and light. Seen some nice gold ones, jikes!
Ps: Kevin's review are top notch! I like his no nonsense and clear relaxed pace of presentation, thank You Kevin!

@@eternalafterlyfe I eventually traded the car for a new Honda HRV. A few reasons. #1. Gas. Once prices started going up it was a bear to fill 60-80 every week with premium for a 22 gallon tank. #2 minor things started happening that would put the car out of commission e.g. the trunk latch actuator went out. I couldn't find it anywhere, Lexus wanted to charge $2500, eventually I found it on e-bay but had to wait a month because it was being shipped from Japan. Then the oxygen sensor went out and it was a whole different issue because its located on the fire wall and not an easy fix. I couldn't do it myself and it cost. Other than that the next thing up was going to be the control arms and I had enough. It still rode like a dream, white fluffy cloudy, like driving a craftmatic bed, but it still is a 2007. If I had the money time and patience I would have kept it, but alas. I hope this info is helpful.

LS 460 is an absolutely fantastic vehicle if you have the money to maintain it. I drive a 2006 LS 430 I bought 15 years ago that has been fantastic and when it needs repair it really isn't that bad. My younger brother though bought a 2016 LS 460 only about five years ago used of course, and he has dropped at least $10,000 into it to keep it running. The air ride went out and I remember that cost $6-7K to repair. I don't remember the other stuff just that one big whammy but he does love the car. Let's be honest when we are talking power it blows my LS 430 away, but I didn't buy the LS 430 for power. I love the fact it really is a 1990s car in style and has what I call simple beauty to it. Great video!

About the LS460 you might want to avoid the 2013+ models. They might be reliable but they use for the infotainment the infamous remote touch controller which was meant to be a Lexus version of the 2000's BMW idrive. While reliable is unintuitive and borderline unusable while driving and many features from the car are buried inside it's menus and it is not upgradable.
The LS430 is similar. it uses a touch screen while easy to use and understand it is hopelessly outdated. Both from hardware and software. And as the 460 not upgradable unless you get the base with the traditional 2 din radio (can be changed to modern android/carplay HUs even) but prohibits you from getting more features that aren't cooled seats (self closing doors, air spring, backup camera, ACC)
Which brings you to the LS460 whose touchscreen can be updated in the 2007-2009 models with V line or the 2010-2012 while with better resolution and functionality cannot be upgraded but it is truly the best OEM infotainment you can get in a Lexus newer ones included.
I personally would stick to this particular gen of the LS and get V line installed.

I want to advise anyone considering to buy a used vehicle to have a through Pre-Purchase inspection done by either the Lexus dealer (about $140) or your trusted mechanic (about $80), even if the car has the reputation of being indestructible. Two out of three of the LS460s that I had inspected did not pass a thorough inspection. By this I mean that they had cumulative problems that added up to not being financially worth buying even if the seller discounted the car. Tried to buy a 2005 to 2012 Acura TL for my son. Had five inspected and all failed badly even though these were very well built cars. They looked awesome, but the previous owners just didnt take care of them. I consider spending $80 (or even $140) to save me $5,000 of repairs well spent money.

Yes, I never had any dealership refuse to allow me to take the car to my independent mechanic or to a dealership mechanic. If they were to refuse, I would walk away from that car. Many times I found a Lexus or Acura on a Chevy used car lot or a Chrysler used car lot and they always agreed to let me take it to a Lexus or Acura mechanic to check it out. I refused to talk price until I knew the condition first . One independent lot allowed us to leave our car at their lot and allowed us 3 days to keep the Acura to have it checked out by our mechanic and drive it around all that we wanted. We loved that car and bought it.

I forgot to mention that if I was looking at an Acura at an Acura dealership, then I would take the car to my independent mechanic for review, rather than another Acura dealership. This way I don't have to worry about the dealership having a conflict of interest (example: the Acura dealership doing the review over states problems with the car so that they can try to get me to buy a car from their dealership instead- this actually happened once).

Couple of things to add - I had the 2007 Exec edition - the dash was sticky and melting, and I had to pay several hundred dollars to get it redone. Another early year issue was the braking click noise when shifting in reverse or backing up at slow speeds. I didn’t have this car long, but I had the previous car (2004 LS430) and loved it. 2007 was a letdown. It’s not a drivers car, at least the Exec edition. Review was spot on. When I got my 2009 460 with 131k miles all that needed to be done was the front control arms that were shot common problem got them fixed replaced them myself. But do beware the brake actuator brake booster and sometimes abs pump will go out on these, if you don’t have some sort of warranty or you bought a 460 that had these replaced recently be careful. Not saying it’s some hidden secrets but I’m currently saving 6k to replace the brake actuator and ABS pump as they both failed which was a given as my car is 14 years old with now 145k miles but I really did not expect them to fail at the same time Lexus looked at it for free as I do work there and confirmed the problem. I don’t to much mind as I have other cars but kinda bums me out Lexus doesn’t grant a extended warranty for a part they know fails yeah you could say it’s a part that will need to be replaced such as brakes but we have had 460s with 40k 50k miles come in for the same problem my car has. Lexus did have a warranty back in 2016-2017 but only for a year. All around good car literally nothing else is wrong with it like at all. Everything works inside and out the most comfortable Lexus I’ve ever sat in. It’s more comfortable than the new LS 500s yes I’m being serious I drive all types of Lexus 5 days a week.

*The LS460 has more problems than you think. I have a 2008, garaged kept and original owner. The dash, door panels and glovebox area started melting and leaving finger prints and gouges when you touch it. If you live in a hot and sunny climate like here in texas this will happen to your car. Also my battery went bad last year and I had it replaced by lexus and the infotainment display has never worked since replacing the battery. Just says some black error message all the time, can't use backup camera, gps, or anything else. Luckily there is a separate button for the ac and radio so I can still use them but can't see anything on the screen. Lexus dealer said $3200 to replace the infotainment center so I said screw that. Also the paint on the drip rails has peeled off, its just basically some sort of wrap over shiny and smooth chrome so no wonder why it doesn't stick. These are just a few of the gremlins that the ls460 has. I have a 2005 ls430 as well and only thing I've had to replace on that car is the battery and front wheel hub, which just went bad a couple of weeks ago after 16 years! Long story short, the ls430 is a much more reliable car than the ls460.*

The isf style transmission and the big fsport breaks and sport suspension makes it fucking awesome to drive

I got lucky with a 2007 LS 460 with the rear seat package reclining, heat and cooled etc. 74.5 k miles 😮. Florida Car 1 owner all maintenance records. Taking it to the shop for a full breakdown. Took the car on a road trip already 8 hours total and was pleased! I've been driving a Benz for the last 10 years (but my Wife has a GS 300) and have had the C, E and S class style. Impressive Car.

I bought my 2007 with 93k. It’s an L model with air ride which one air suspension already changed RR. The wind noise thing is annoying on highway drives when you want silence it’s like leaving the window with a crack open. My trunk motor lift went out. I changed all my control arm bushings they were all shot.

Excellent review, I appreciate your info and background! I have owned a 2007 LS460L in Smokey Granite Mika for almost four years now. I purchased the car from a dealership in Illinois with 53k miles on it (currently have 58k). She sits more than she is driven, but she has been babied her entire life. All service by me and the previous owner completed at Lexus dealerships. A few things to point out from my experience... After I purchased the car I did notice a faint squeaking noise when first applying the brakes. I brought it to my local Lexus dealer and was concerned it was the brake actuator after doing some research online (mechanically the brakes were performing fine and no warning lights were on). Agreed to try a brake bleed but the noise still was there. They ended up replacing the entire brake actuator system for free under the enhanced warranty (TSB-54191) in 2017 and never charged me for the original brake bleed job. Also, in April 2020, Lexus mailed me a letter with details about extending the original 10 year warranty enhancement (even further than it originally was) so when I brought it in for an oil change this year I asked the service advisor about it. Again, they replaced everything free under the warranty. It did not have any sticky components or cracks, rather the glove box and the sides of the center console were slightly discolored from the original black color. They replaced all the door panels, glove box, console, and dashboard. The service advisor said if paid out of pocket it would be close to $7,500 for this repair. The only problems I've had with the car were the passenger side mirror stopped folding in when locked, and the driver lumbar support didn't engage. When I bought the car I purchased an extended warranty (4y/50k coverage for $2,750 and a $50 deductible) and both were covered. If I didn't have the extended warranty I would likely not have fixed them as both are conveniences and don't affect the performance of the car. I also own a 2013 RX and have had good reliability and service experiences with the Lexus dealerships. My two cents is if you own or are looking to purchase a Lexus is to connect with a local Lexus service advisor and try to do at least some of your maintenance and repair work there. Indeed, they do take excellent care of you and your car, but I sincerely believe they will work with you should something come up. I bought my RX in August of 2016 as a certified vehicle. It came with an unlimited mileage warranty for two years and a few complementary oil changes/tire rotations. Fast forward to December 2018 I brought it in for an oil change and the service advisor waived these charges and even changed the brake fluid, wiper blades, and engine/ac filters (even though the comped services ended August 2018). Understandable that not everyone wants to spend the extra money on dealer repairs, but the old saying "good is not always cheap, and cheap is not always good" rings true. I went to a Lexus from a Mercedes (also owned an Audi and Volvo) but will likely never leave the Lexus brand. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the design direction they went to on the newer vehicles, but for me service and reliability will outweigh that factor by a long mile. And no, I am not an employee of Toyota or Lexus, just a passionate owner sharing his experience.

On my 2007, The seat belts, when un-snapped from their lock, hits the door (which is common) and has literally torn out large pieces of rubber/vinyl from both the arm rest and side trim. I have seen this on the early models. On the 2013 and newer models, Lexus re-engineered the side trim inward so it is not susceptible to seat belt damage. Why would the engineers install foam and vinyl on their side interior doors is besides me. My ls 400 1998 is all leather and looks like new. This model has been a 'train wreck'.

We've had a 2015 IS300h for about fours years, and have only had an issue with a spark plug.
and the 12v battery which we had to replace during the first covid lockdown, I did that myself.
To be fair, it's only done 30,000 miles, so I wouldn't expect any other problems. We have a service contract with our local Toyota/Lexus dealer, which guarantees the hybrid battery for 10 years.
    I'm in the UK

Glenn that is right for some reason my Ls460L, 2008, uses a qt. of oil. Every 2000 miles drying Hwy on cruise 85 MPH. I have always used Mobil 1 5w-20 or 0w-20. I am thinking my pcv valve may be stuck open but I am not going to have a Lexus dealer take the intake manifold etc... and change a $12 pvc valve ie(2.1 hrs. Labor; so I will try a different brand of 5w-20:oil. Believe it or not sometimes that will solve the problem. 🙄

Excellent video. I am at the end of my 2001 430LS which was already stuffed with electronics. All of them still work except for the cruise control module that gave out a year ago. A fix would cost more than the car is worth to me. And so I am looking at getting another LS. Momentarily considered an A8 but as reliability is a BIG thing for me and I do not need super powers in my car, LS wins again. The air suspension on mine has been problem free, so I would actually recommend it. Breaks are fine, but unless you go for the high end rotors, they strain and wobble which is a pain. Other than that this is a superb car.

Pay a couple hundred bucks for an extended warranty. When I bought my 2010 (AWD with Air Suspension - 68k miles) in 2015, the extended warranty I bought from USAA (around $500.00) when I purchased the car replaced the air suspension on all 4 corners under that warranty. Saved me close to 8 grand!

Wowza. I bought one used, a 2008 with the chrome rims. Until I saw this video, I assumed it had a donut space saver spare----never even checked. I found a used chrome rim on E-Bay, also found a matching tire, went to a shop and had it mounted and keep it in my trunk. After watching this, I just went out to the car and lifted that carpet in the trunk---and sure enough, a full sized spare on a matching rim, LOL. So I've been driving around with two full sized spares.
