Why Tao, Kris, and Luhan left EXO during their peak

  • The dominant EXO era started at the peak of their popularity in early 2014. EXO would dominate award shows, amass millions of fans, and win the 2013 Song of the Year Award in “Growl.” The only thing that could have slowed down the EXO train was themselves.
    And that’s exactly what happened.
    When Kris, Luhan, and Tao left the group in 2014 and 2015, their departures would mark one of the biggest moments in K-pop history. The three Chinese members decided to leave the hottest K-pop group and bank on themselves in starting a solo career back in China. They would fight a messy lawsuit with SM Entertainment to attain their freedom and get that wish to start anew in China.
    That bold decision paid off immediately. In just one year after their departures, the three former EXO members exploded in China. But EXO was no slouch either, continuing as nine members and reaching their apex in 2016, when they won five awards.
    Let’s take a look at why Kris, Luhan, and Tao were geniuses in leaving EXO.

      @@jacobbai9619 there's definitely a difference in degree for mistreatment. As foreign members, they weren't given as many opportunities as the korean members, exo-m was given barely any promotions compared to exo-k, even though exo-m was the unit that made them explode in china, one of their biggest markets, and having to adapt to a foreign culture and language is already hard enough on its own. It would be even more difficult for them to speak up about it. So I don't think it's fair to say that the korean members had it just as hard as the foreign members, even though they haven't had the best treatment for sure.

    I started listening to both BTS and EXO in August 2013, and you could tell how drastically EXO's momentum shifted after the others left. It didn't help that 2014-2016 were kind of bad years for K-pop and SM.It's a shame because by the time Tao left, the group was starting to find their footing (the "Call Me Baby" video? Peak charisma gold). I still love their music, as their albums are consistently solid, I just wonder where they'd be today if they'd been treated better by SM and got the rest that they deserved. Would there have been a need for SuperM if EXO was able to keep up their standing from their rookie years? Who knows?

    • @CD-gb5he

      Yeah. People always say those 3 left at the height of the groups popularity when that's simply not the case. Are people seriously forgetting how Exo was cheated in 2017 and should have sweeped the awards season? And that occurred after 3 members left. Or how even after 3 members left and Lay hasn't been active, the group still sells over a million physical albums each album(with the one exception happening because SM wouldn't restock the albums and yet they still managed to sell around 800,000 physical copies and that album didn't even have D.O. or Xiumin)and all of their solos and sub units usually sell over 200,000 physical copies. And that's with all the rumors they encountered over the years such as Baekhyun and Taeyeon or Kai and Krystal. And we can't forget that no amount of trying to convince fans to switch over to NCT succeeded until Super M was created and some Exo fans decided they would support NCT members since Baekhyun and Kai were in a unit with them. Now, after Super M, NCT is finally selling more physical albums.

    • @CD-gb5he

      Also, ex exo members helped provide the blueprint for the exo solo debuts, and other groups like NCT, BTS, etcetera. Because, Kris was over here collaborating with Travis Scott, Vin Diesel, fashion designers etcetera. Luhan was doing projects for Disney and costarring with Matt Damon. Tao also went down a similar path.
      Granted I do recognize that older groups like Big Bang and JYJ and PSY were doing collaborations with western artists (such as Missy Elliott, Kanye, & Snoopdog) long before the ex-EXO members. So, they were probably the ones that helped influence the ex-EXO members.

Whether you want to admit it or not, non Koreans are treated differently in Korea, that's just the way it is, social change will inevitably happen, but it will be slow, and perhaps painful.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The music business really is brutal. I think most K-pop fans know about slave contracts, but K-pop idols goes through a lot more than those contracts. I think a trend we'll see in the future is more idols skipping the Big 3 to debut in other smaller or mid-sized labels that treat their idols better.

    • @hanamoon5474
      @hanamoon5474 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Popsori For the record, I know that these types of contracts are used in western countries as well, as to the other difficulties faced by Kpop artists, I'm well aware of the stress they go through on multiple levels, but combining that with this huge financial obligation hanging over your head, to me, that's the part that would be the last straw. It would be nice if management and artist could be mutually beneficial to each other on a more equal basis, a smaller company might fulfill that.

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@hanamoon5474 For sure, I wasn't trying to imply you didn't know these contracts. I was more arguing that for nearly all K-pop (as well as Western) label, it's heavily stacked against the new trainee.
      I see a lot more idols fleeing the big, established, brand name labels a lot more often than 10 years ago in 2010. Smaller and mid-sized companies in K-pop can offer a lot more incentives to their idols (e.g. better profit splitting, more freedom, etc.), as well as be successful in today's K-pop scene.

      @@Popsori I didn't mean to appear confrontational, at any rate, you or I don't have all the answers. I read many posts on fans opinions on management companies, when they really have no idea what goes on internally. I'm not a business person, but there has to be a better way. As to the smaller companies, MAMAMOO comes to mind, they seem to have more creative freedom, it will be interesting to see how they fare in the long run

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For sure, I think there has to be a better way too. Although I'm more slanted towards the idols in most cases, I know that companies need to make profit too. It's a business after all and K-pop labels aren't charities.
      I'd like to see how Rainbow Bridge World and other label smaller/mid-sized labels run their agencies.

    For kpop stans who don’t know or who still think that every entertainment agency treat their artists well, think again. They might make it look like they cherish a non-Korean artist, but if that particular artist is famous, they will “cherish” that person not because they respect him/her that much, but because the money that they can get from him/her is a huge help for them. Look at it closely, there’s always and I mean always a difference in treatment between a Korean and non-korean artists. People may deny it because their bias would be hit by the truth, but it’s going to be obvious. 😌 Anyway, support and focus on your faves.

    As for some EXO-Ls that are saying, "OMG, yOu OnLy LiStEnEd To Growl 80 TiMeS!?!?" stop being elitist K-pop fans. I'm not an EXO-L. For people that aren't EXO fans, that number is a lot.
    I actually covered over 80 EXO concerts as press. After looking at video footage from 2013-2014 from covering EXO, I vastly underestimated the number of times I had to listen to "Growl." I played it too safe. I can definitely say I heard that song probably more than 5x times.
    But the actual number doesn't matter; it's not a competition of "who's the better EXO-L fan," even though I'm not one myself. Just don't be an elitist K-pop fan. It's cringe.

    Interesting piece. Love the phrase "normies". I'm going to throw in an opinion on the 'exiting issue. You are right, corporate employees do hold their own interests as important, yet when adults are old enough to be corporate employees, they've usually had enough normal day to day experience of keeping with a steady job long enough to see it to a natural conclusion. I think there is merit in being held to an employment contract as an Idol. Not only the cost saving of changing merchandise etc, but the Group dynamics. Choreography is a practical aspect yet the emotional tug of the heart strings, the distraction from routines, the uncertainty of feeling as though remaining members are put in the middle of arguing sides, makes really difficult times when they want to be supportive yet have to be loyal to their Management as members who are staying. It is a difficult decision, leaving a group & cutting short a contract. Maybe the Management could (forgive me, I don't know whether this exists), maybe it does yet could use some reviewing and improvement, maybe the Management could look at updating the contract clause describing the exit strategies. It is helpful (& typically essential) to make sure each Signatory to a contract understands the contract. These need to include any cost requirements that a leaver would incur. Where the exit strategy clauses are better understood, maybe the discussion opportunities need reviewing to ensure that sufficient opportunity exists to give Idols a chance to air any disputes and follow through with more thought out decisions in a more mutually agreeable way. This would save the feelings of the Management and the remaining members and those chosing to leave. In the same way that a Management Agency has a great Legal Dept., they also have obligations to ensure that potential disruptions are smoothed, to protect the business side of the Group(s). Typical 1st rule of business, and that is what an Industry does, is to create profit(s). Being 'defensive against accusations' could be interpreted as being less willing to resolve problems. That 'unwillingness' could be used by the smartest legal opponents as leverage that says a Management Agency doesn't intent to protect the well being of a Group or its members in the event of problems escalating that affect them all. Thus, it is in the Agency's interests to be diplomatic in resolving difficulties as smoothly as possible, to protect the remaining Group's capacity & the members well-being and the Agency's reputation and to save future legal costs. A smart contract writer could save them millions and help younger Artists understand how to reach amicable resolution and progress concerns into solutions. 👄

    After hearing Tao's interview regarding his trainee days.. And Kris' radio guesting, where it happens that they talk about kpop era.. It rings a bell on how both happens to said the same thing that they wanted to showcase C-music and that they're Chinese. Also how they wanted people to hear Chinese music as well. That they get to perform and sing C-music wherever, without anyone telling them what they need to do. I guess the reason why they felt mistreated is that they also wanted to do C-music and perform it on stage and on their concerts but whenever they're on tour and promoting, mostly their song is performed in korean version and less Chinese version because that's what the company wants them to do. I think that they really want to be known and perform as an EXO but also wants to be recognized as a C-artist/idol and not just K-artist/idol and able to sing Chinese songs 'cause they're Chinese and not Korean. So i guess, maybe that is why they felt a bit unfair and out of place. Because mostly, the sides were all in favor in Korean and less Mandarin whenever they go out as a whole group.

      But they were joining Korean pop/K-pop at that time not cpop so its very obvious that the company will tell them to make Korean songs instead of Chinese ones.
