The best channel on TH-cam for gaining knowledge and inspiration for film making. I often get kept a wake at night watching them too!

When I grow up I will definitely be a cinematographer. The seniors at our school got me to be their cinematographer for the movie they're making, so it's encouraging to know there's people that believe in me. This channel really helps me too!

There are extremely few jobs for cinematographers and only the best get hired.

That's why 1917 is such an intense experience because we weren't " let off the hook" with cuts in the editing room. Great interview film courage!

Thanks Kaleb, we really like that part of the interview. It's hard to put into practice but very effective if you can pull it off.

When I took a filmmaking class in college as an elective, the professor yelled at me when my short was one long take. He said "This is theater, not film" and he roared about how there is nothing different between what I did and seeing someone on stage, and he went on to talk about how film is piecing together shots. I was young so I didn't know that ANY professor in any subject is just one person with one opinion (that is probably argued against by his peers). That angry professor was not a skilled teacher, but he did make me go on on a process of learning-by-failing, which was beneficial.

@@filmcourage This is why I loved Andy's interview. He made important points. I also remember editing from VHS deck to VHS deck, which made me appreciate editing software later in life. I am proud of having stuck with video even after suffered under a sadistic professor's tutelage, even though it was only a hobby for many years. My first feature, which was a practice movie for me, was picked up for distribution immediately, which I attribute to the years I spent discovering what works and what fails.

Would you say that professor played a part in showing a way to expand story telling by making his claim that of film not theater? Or was he narrow minded that led to you forming your own thoughts that expanded your views of story telling?

I find the more I have thought upfront about the theme of the scene (its visual, unspoken, depth) the better informed I am when making cinematographic decisions. The design space is way too huge for more than just a handful of variations. In short, you cannot edit footage you missed because you didn't know what to shoot. Patience, to ponder sufficiently in advance, is key to capturing the story you wish to tell.

I have some friends who were camera assistants in the age of film. It really was incredibly different. In the winter they would have to set up warming tents at regular intervals in between the set and the camera truck, so that the film would not freeze and snap on the journey to the truck. Plus constant fear that you would accidentally expose a mag to light! It's pretty crazy how much things have changed and how accessible this stuff can be nowadays. Anyway love the channel, this was a great video as always!

The youtube channels Wandering DP and Spenser Sakurai. And applying their theory by experimenting. See later what doesn’t work. And try again.
