    The filter-down, or ripple-effect of one DP through the internet is fantastic.
    You read from the DP of Knives out, then dispersed it through this project and it's breakdown.
    Now I've got another technique to apply for my own shoots. Amazing. Thank you.

    as someone just breaking into the film industry who is is already working on projects with small - medium crews, i just want to tell you how awesome it is for you to share bts production insights and solutions. it is a huge help for myself and i would think especially people outside the business entirely to have this knowledge from a business that can often seem very "closed" and secretive when it comes to on set production (as well as pre production), especially if you lack the right network. thank you!

    I feel like you're really opening up to the TH-cam format and letting your personality and style shine through the edit. I'm a big fan!! Also *taking a lot of notes* -- I'd love to see what lighting fixtures you think are essential to have in a versatile professional kit vs. what's worth only renting.

    • @lewispotts

      Thanks! I think it depends where your at in your filmmaking journey, but these kind of ones in this video are go too's for me these days.

      I'm a gaffer, I think having a nice panel type source for soft light on faces is a great start, next moving on to a hard source like a fresnel, great for a hair light or to light the background. I like the aputure 60x, dedo lights are nice for that, if you want a cheap option a mole or arri 300w.
      Next fixture for me is a tube led light, the length gives you decently soft shadows / wrap around a face given its size which makes them easy to conceal or you can make them stand out as a practical. Finally I'd buy a small light like an aperture mc or a lume cube, a tiny light that can act as a eye light, stick it inside a practical, something quick to place under a cabinet or inside a car.

    I'm no DP/cinematographer, and i don't plan on becoming one, i'm just looking to make some money with videography, but the way you and other pros think about the craft is really helpful to me. if you could keep finding ways to organically insert your professional philosophy about how you approach your projects, I would be super grateful because it helps me to think about how to serve the client the right way. EXAMPLE, WHEN YOU SAID THIS IT WAS SO HELPFUL:
    "That's your job as a DP, to make it look like it's meant to look. And not just be a backlighting robot all the time, and trying to make things look as pretty as you can make them look. Doing what's needed for the job is necessary sometimes."

    Fantastic channel! I would love to see a sort of “starting out kit”. A couple stands, 1-2 lights, a couple modifiers, what kind of movement (a gimbal, a tripod+head) what software to use. Suggestions for spherical lenses with character. What kind of lens setup to start with (24/50/105?)
    Think an artist or a couple of people just starting out. Playing around. Would be great! Thanks!

    Lewis - you are absolutely in a class of your own when it comes to quality of content. Seems pretty much every other YT out there has become the shopping channel reviewing the latest crap... ugh. Your content is just pure gold... macro, why use the probe lens on this shoot instead of say the Tokina 100mm macro? The iPhone monitoring kit is just dope... wow... and the shoot on the chair at the Fair Grounds... pure bliss. Very humbled watching you work... thank you for sharing. Don't ever change.

    • @lewispotts
      @lewispotts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @DethronerX

    I completely agree, if we get the footage from the source being what the result is supposed to look like, then it never looks fake, it looks genuine and gives the right kind of emotion and connection to the world and we don't get distracted. If it's supposed to look like shot with phone, then it has to be shot with a phone, because of its size, the hand shakes even with it's stabilization. If I want to shoot something for VHS look, I'd prefer to shoot on a VHS camera. It saves time on post too, you get the real look and feel and you just correct things here and there and add your grade for the mood. The lighting does most of that anyway too. And the result matters more than how expensive the equipment is.
    I saw this movie by Steve Martin, which had scenes made to look like old silent films, but the movie was shot with a modern film camera so it kept distracting me, because it looked fake. Now I know older cameras were huge and a pain, but 8mm or 16mm can give you the old nostalgic look. The same goes with lighting and fog/mist/diffusion. The more it's done on the shoot, for colors and filters, the realistic it looks, than on post.
