    The gameplay was never the reason I loved this game, even back in 2003. What makes KOTOR great is the story. The Plot. The characters. It captures the fun, exciting, heroic feel of the original SW trilogy and lets you enjoy the well written and well paced story, AND it lets you shape it with your choices. You FEEL like a character in a Star Wars movie, and that is pretty fun.
    Off the top of my head, in my opinion, I can't think of a game that has surpassed the characters and the story told in KOTOR. Graphics have gotten better, combat is much more challenging and fun, worlds LOOK much more 'real', but no game matches KOTOR's story.
    That's why it's still relevant, and will remain so. A true classic.

    Oh man, I played it for the first time ever last year when I was finally able to build a pc. Even knowing the plot twist beforehand, it still managed to become my favorite Star Wars game of all time. The exploration, atmosphere of each planet we visited, the immersion, the interaction with the environment, the excellent dialogues, the space battle sections with the turret, having my own ship and group of misfit friends to travel with and the STORY, it all made me feel not like if I played a Star Wars movie, but like if I had lived my very own one starring as myself, something that no other game of the franchise did. Finished the second one some weeks ago and enjoyed it too. I hope I get an Xbox someday in order to experience how it played on console, as it really intrigues me.

    • @Dass_Jennir
      @Dass_Jennir 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Austyn Melcher I personally really prefer it that way, as the mouse and its wheel makes it way easy and comfortable to navigate the menus, which are abundant from combat to inventory. And the hot keys for those actions that can be considered the most tedious to perform by point and clicking are located just next to the WASD keys, making it a really smooth experience, allowing the combat to age like wine and making it the only PC game I prefer playing without a controller.
      Only tried using controller with Kotor mobile and the Steam version of Kotor 2, which use the remade layout by Aspyr and not the og one from Xbox. Something I find disappointing, as I wanted to feel that og console expirience and not all the buttons on the controller are used for the new versions, which is critical in a game where so many commands and actions can and need to be prompted sometimes.

      Owen Carey yeah I feel ya, I remember looking up the solution for the Rancor puzzle at the sewers because I didn’t catch on the mechanic of giving items from your inventory, and later on did the same trying to find tactics to defeat the Sith Governor on Taris and Malak in the final fight, as he kept breaking my ass to tears and because of a mistake from my behalf due to me using the wrong force powers to kill the people on stasis that he used to heal himself. Fortunately, I couldn’t apply the tactics I saw for the fight with Malak as I neither had the items nor the feats people recommended, so I had to fight him myself in one the most memorable videogame fights I ever experienced.

      @shaelynmartin1996 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      KOTOR II was always one of my favorite games growing up, along with KOTOR I (They actually still are lol) and even though I'm a huge fan of the game, I personally find that using the RCM is the best way to experience KOTOR II, simply because it just adds so much more.

    • @wezacker6482
      @wezacker6482 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      KOTOR II is a great game too. Darker, more shades of gray as opposed to the good vs. evil of the original KOTOR. That's exactly what a lot of players like about KOTOR II. It's the 'Empire' to KOTOR's 'New Hope.'
      I still rank the first game as my preferred game for a few reasons. 1) Maybe I am hopelessly old-fashioned, but I prefer to play as the straight 'good guy' hero in an epic quest against evil. I don't enjoy playing more nuanced heroes (or antiheroes) nearly as much.
      Also, the Mining station intro in KOTOR II goes on and on and on and on. The rest of the game is paced much better, but that first slog around with a mining laser is painfully dull. I found a mod that lets you skip that level, so I'll probably give KOTOR II another spin sooner or later.

  • @bloodredeyes1
    @bloodredeyes1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    An enjoyable review/retrospective. Some points though:
    1)I think you got Sentinel/Scout and Consular/Scoundrel mixed up as Sentinel/Scout is the mix of Guardian/Soldier and Consular/Scoundrel with the emphasis on Skill Points and middle-of-the-road hp/fp and regen.
    2) Scout is the best skill class in the game. 14 or 16 Int on that class (I can't remember which) gives you **28** friggen skills points at lvl 1. Unfortunately, as you said, skills aren't as useful/integral in KotOR 1 as they are in 2.
    3) I don't think Con isn't that important if you stock up on medpacs and utilize menu healing/buffing over in-game usage.
    4) I think you hit the nail on the head as far as the combat is concerned especially about the game pushing you to just dual/double-bladed lightsabers and bashing enemies up. I was mostly successful in a playthrough with just blasters and using one of the Yavin Station blaster rifles, but the end game is so much more challenging when you don't use the game's "preferred" method.
    5) **SPOILER FOR FINAL AREA OF THE GAME**
    I found a really interesting scenario you can encounter on the Light Side that I absolutely love and wish had more of an impact on the ending. Apparently, you can choose not to save Bastilia on the Star Forge and kill her instead to end the threat of her Battle Meditation. This harkens back to the decision you can make with Juhani at the beginning of the game and I really wish this Light Side extreme was explores further in this game and had more of an impact than just removing her from the ending cutscene.
    FYI, you can leave Zalbaar on Kashyyyk and just leave the planet once you have the Star Map, but the end is the same where he os removed from the ending. IDK if this impacts Mission's fate if you go DS though.
    All in all, a wonderfully flawed game that is definitely dated combat-wise, but still gets a playthrough from me every once in a while. Good stuff mate 😁

    I really hope you also do a review of the KOTOR 2. I know it gets kind of a bad rap because of the state it launched in and people tend to favor the first one but it's still worth talking about. It has some of the most thought provoking writing in all of Star Wars and is definitely worth a try on PC with the Restored Content Mod.

    I was very young when my dad got me this game, I barely understood English at the time. I couldn't look things up on the internet either because I had to wait for my dad to get home, boot up his computer and enable internet access for my computer. I remember being stuck on that planet for a long time, I had to figure it out myself since most of the time I had no internet access. How I got past the rancor in every playthrough was to make a save right before you enter the room and then just try to kill him using every available item I had (grenades, buffs, ...) I had to retry a lot since I was relying on RNG. The few times where I was able to kill him Zaalbar was usually the last one standing with barely any HP left.
    I didn't know anything about character builds at the time so I went with whatever sounded cool and ended up having points all over the place. I'm amazed I was even able to finish that game playing it that way.
    Still a great game however.

    A lot of your gameplay shows that you don't utilize the pause feature to it's full potentiality (I had the same issue for years), you need to start pausing the game and switching between characters. Utilize the feature that allows for stacking commands more so your companions aren't just basic attacking the whole fight, manage your DPS and utilize your followers more than when you die and are forced to switch and playing this game even on hard becomes much easier.

I think one of the best parts about it, as mentioned, is that the game really grounds you as a non-force user for hours and hours so that when you finally do become a Jedi, it actually feels like a huge accomplishment. Not to mention all the hints that Lucasfilm/Disney have been dropping: it started with them making Revan (at least the name) canon again according to the Rise of Skywalker visual dictionary, but then Hasbro made a Black Series action figure of Revan (the one we all know from KotoR), announced they're making a Black Series FX purple/red Revan lightsaber, they're using Revan in promotional art for some new Star Wars mobile games in recent weeks, and now Pop! are making new figures of Revan and Malak. It really seems to me that KotoR is going to be made canon again, possibly with a remake of the first game if the rumors are true to fit into the new canon that makes it official.

I was enjoying the game and right when I got the room where you finally get a lightsaber the game froze. I got frustrated but thought a simple reboot of the console would solve the problem. Unfortunately it didn't and every time I walked in the lightsaber room my game froze. I went to Blockbuster and rented a copy of the game figuring my cousins disc must have been scratched but Blockbusters copy froze too and that's when I realized there was something wrong my with save file. I had to start a brand new game file and go through the tedious process of getting to that point again. Thankfully when I got to the lightsaber part it didn't freeze and I was able to beat the game which I enjoyed along with the sequel :)

    One thing I would like to mention: there is one advantage to using just one lightsaber, namely, you have a higher attack chance. Dual-wielding gives you a penalty to your chance to hit, though that can be mitigated in certain ways.

    • @ThisisKyle

    • @josephthomas8318

    • @ThisisKyle
      @ThisisKyle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@josephthomas8318 If you level those exact things but use a Double-Bladed Lightsaber instead of the single you get double the damage and attack potential because for some reason the Double-Bladed Lightsaber acts like a single so things like Dueling still works on it but it also acts like when you use two separate Lightsabers without the penalty of having two different attack numbers on each hand. Also Double-Bladed Lightsaber with Master Speed and Master Flurry does 6 hits in one attack animation

    • @josephthomas8318
      @josephthomas8318 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I admit I didnt know dueling affected double bladed lightsabers. A single bladed saber still has a better base attack modifier then a double bladed.
      I just turned on my game to check. With my most recent character, a bone stock single bladed lightsaber has a +20 attack modifier and a double bladed has +11/+13 modifier.
      It really comes down to personal preference of whether you want a higher chance to hit or do you want the raw power of extra attacks but with lower chance to hit.

    • @josephthomas8318
      @josephthomas8318 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not saying that using a single normal lightsaber is the better then any other play style. I'm just pointing out that a properly built character will do just fine with a single blade in even in the late stages of the game.
      I usually have 3 built sabers for myself but only use one at a time. My main one built as strong as my inventory of crystals allows, a secondary spec'd into blaster deflection, and a third lightsaber spec'd into fighting large numbers of droids.

Hopefully the remake will give the game a more Fallen Order or even VTMB style combat system combining 3rd person shooting mechanics with good melee.

    In my experience the scoundrel is absolutely the most powerful class. They can level up persuade the most of any class (the most important skill). They have sneak attack which applies crazy muiltiplers to damage when the enemy cannot fight back. This means when you use stealth (which I also hardly ever used) or when they are stunned such as terror, stun, stasis or critical hits. The last thing is scoundrels luck. This applies huge bonuses just for being a scoundrel included huge defense bonuses. You will be hurting for feats but as long as you know what character you want to make it doesn't become that much of a problem.

    I love this game too. I’m very skeptical of a remake, though. I want another sequel, built off the original mechanics. I pray they hire some writers that know and love Star Wars like real fans do.

      I'm with you there, I'm afraid KOTOR is going to go the way the rest of Star Wars has gone, down the toilet

      Synthetica For sure. Its also a great game. Story isn’t as good as the first, but I really like how they expanded the abilities and powers. Honestly, I’d like to see Dragon Age I or II style mechanics in a 3rd installment of Kotor. They could really knock it out of the park and capitalize on the nostalgia around the first two.

      ThisisKyle Agreed. I’m very disappointed with Disney. I’m not a Disney Star Wars fan, yet. I liked Rogue One, but haven’t seen a movie or the show since The Last Jedi. As far as I’m concerned the Saga ended in 1983, regardless of what Jar Jar Abrams thinks.
      I’m almost convinced to get Disney plus and binge the show tho, everyone I trust likes it. Disney hasn’t lost me completely but I have high expectations after the sequel charade.

      @@SyntheticaYT Kotor 2 seems cool I play on Xbox and I've been looking for any information about the restored content, from what I've heard the restored content is only on PC not Xbox which is sad but I'm still getting kotor 2 it seems good, I hope the Kotor 3 or the remake that's supposedly being made by ea will be good

    I just started a new playthrough (did like 3 when the game was new). It took me about 10 hours, over the course of 3 days, to get it to run on a modern PC with widescreen support, hud fixes, new textures for planets, models and weapons, extra content mods and troubleshooting because of mod conflicts.
    But let me tell you, I will never uninstall the game again, it was worth it!
