    I commented this on somebody else’s video, but I wanted to say it here too!
    Two things I find hilarious about this production:
    1. Despite their homophobic rhetoric, in My Shot, they kept the “Laurens, I like you a lot” line, which was a DIRECT REFERENCE to Hamilton’s bisexuality.
    2. They added in this pastor role to come in, talk to Alexander and help him get “saved” WHEN THIS WAS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. HAMILTON ALREADY HAS A LITERAL COME TO JESUS MOMENT IN THAT SONG.
    “I take the children to church on Sunday, a sign of a cross on the door, and I pray. That never used to happen before” Like???

    • @PelafinaLievre
      @PelafinaLievre 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      1. The reference to his bisexuality went over their heads.
      2. This isn’t a “sign of the cross” kind of church. They specifically wanted to “present the gospel” and specifically have him convert to their Christianity.

    • @lakevalorr
      @lakevalorr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hi.4174 They still kept it in the performance, so I don't think that was the case.
      More likely than not, they used it as a way to really hammer in the message that bad things will happen to you if you don't believe in God and Jesus (which is the most insensitive thing you could say to someone who is suffering with GRIEF).

    • @lakevalorr
      @lakevalorr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the praying portion was a way to show that Alexander was trying to find a way to cope/grieve for his son. However, it still shows that Alexander was willing to pray to God for guidance or, perhaps, a way to get his life back on track.
      That doesn't excuse the pastor scene though, because oh my god, that was dreadful.

      I completely agree! I was really happy that she made a comment about not blaming or teasing the teenagers. They're getting so much hate, but they're just actors. Religious beliefs aside, their performances were just like any other, typical teenage production, and it's the adults that are causing the issues.
      Edit: It's also, most likely, the adults that changed the lyrics. The teenagers are just reciting them.

Some of these kids have amazing potential- including Eliza- but were simply thrust on a stage by those left in charge of them, lied to about being allowed to perform this musical, and then blasted so publicly to the world.

    It's shows like these that make me wonder if they even had an audition process or good practice time. If you're just gonna stand there if you forget the lines without even attempting to improv I have to wonder if the director even cared 😭😭
    Kinda hurts more than the homophobia
    Clarification: I realized after Julie's reply that I wasn't too clear on what I meant. By improv I'm not asking to make up the words to a song, I know how hard it is to improv onstage. Just a small pace or a struck pose or something would be better than blankly standing there :D

    • @butterflyslinky
      @butterflyslinky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, I don't want to defend anything in this mess, but I will say this--sometimes when acting, the words just fly out of your head and you just try to hop to the next thing you remember. Unfortunately, when the words to a song disappear, you can't really do that quickly, you have to keep up with the music. And improvising music, whether with words or just scatting, is a lot harder than ad-libbing your way out of dialogue.

    • @Harudodo
      @Harudodo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@butterflyslinky Oh I understand! I've been in musicals before. And I really don't blame the actors. What bugged me was the fact that he just stood there and let the music play, awkwardly. I just thought it would've been better to improv some pacing or something :) really no ill will towards the actors, I blame the directors on this one

    Here are my thoughts:
    --I agree that a wealthy megachurch has no business putting on a full-blown production of a copyrighted show without paying the copyright fees. They also have no business changing the lyrics, or altering the message of the show, without permission.
    That said:
    --I believe in "fair use" of songs and other products of entertainment. For example, if a K-12 school put on an amateur show and one kid sang one song from Hamilton without paying a copyright fee, that's "fair use" in my book. Similarly, a church using a song--one song from a musical play--as part of their worship service is "fair use". In my opinion, this would apply whether they performed the original song or altered the lyrics. However, if the adapters kept using the altered song, and if the altered song offended the original writers, then the original writers have a right to ask the adapters to stop.
    --With the authors' permission and even their help, I can see bringing Hamilton to a G or PG level for a family audience. The original Grease on Broadway had some rough language. However, they now have an alternative version--an authorized, tamer version of Grease suitable for community theater, schools, and, I suppose, houses of worship. While a show like Grease is purely for fun, a show like Hamilton can be instructive and bring these historical figures to life for young students, like 1776 can. (My first Broadway show was 1776, when my high school class went to see the production on Broadway.)
    In 1973, I was part of a truncated version of Grease presented by my junior class for our Catholic high school's annual talent show in upper Manhattan. (Each of the four grades put on its own shortened version of a musical, or created an original revue.) The script for Grease had been published as a book, and the cast album was out. For our production, we cleaned up the language--for example, "Forget it" instead of "F*** it." Unfortunately, we were unaware of the law forbidding productions of current Broadway shows within a 50-mile radius. The Grease people weren't happy with us, but they decided not to penalize us, since we were just a little Catholic girls' high school. (I was one of the "square" kids who sang the Rydell Alma Mater at the show's start.)
    I was also part of a production of Gypsy during the early 2000s at Catholic church's community theater in Queens, NY. The director altered some of the stage version's rougher language to the film version's tamer version: "Tough titties" became "Tough! T-U-F: tough!" We prayed before each production, but there were no sermons or altar calls from the stage.

    If I had to _guess_ what Pastor Roman Guiterrez (I think I spelled that right?) meant by saying they aren't anti-LGBT and their church welcomes all, I think the beliefs that community in that church hold are like... that homosexuality is legit a problem that some people have, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't love them, and you should welcome people with those problems so you can help them not have those problems and be a supportive friend and good influence to them... which would be great if they put that energy only toward _actual_ problems. They need to go back and read the Gospel of Matthew (or see a production of Godspell) where Jesus teaches that before you can take the splinter out of your brother’s eye, you must remove the plank from your own. You have to look at yourself first before “trying” to help others. Lying and stealing? Two broken commandments? If you have to commit two sins just to preach about one than you haven’t removed the plank from your eye and you aren’t really preaching. I left preaching 6 years ago to do musical theater but people like this make me think I need to get back in the pulpit just for sanity’s sake. Also being gay is not a sin. I think we all know that but apparently it still needs to be said. Love you Amy!
