It never occurred to me how much the elves had fallen and how much of a social impact it had on Thedas. I was always focused on the mage vs templar controversy I overlooked it. This video really shines a light on the issue, and it makes me wonder who suffered the most scrutiny? An elf or a mage? And being both, the person has such a heavy burden, like Fiona in The Calling. It's so sad. :(
Thanks for tuning in! The support for this show has been overwhelming, and just by watching this episode you're endorsing its creators to continue. For the next 9 weeks the primary goal of this show will be to introduce viewers to the DA universe to catch them up for the release of Inquisition later this year. You'll find the episodes jam-packed as we try our best to sum up the entire franchise with the short time given to us before the game's release. As with every Lore Series, some information will be sacrificed as we are working within certain time constraints. For a more in-depth look at Thedas, visit the lore master who writes for this series @ th-cam.com/users/ladyxinsanity Question of the Week: Unlike the elves of many other fantasy settings, the elves of the Dragon Age setting are not high and haughty. Comparing Lore is subjective. Elder Scrolls lore is longer lived but also contradictory as lore was not enforced between games. Dragon age is a shorter lived title but the lore is consistent between games for the most part. Both have rich and deep lore worthy of sharing.
FrogRaider1 You're dead right about that. Ten years and several production teams and writers leads to a ton of inconsistencies in TES--on the other hand, real life history is very much the same way.
Twenty-Something Nerd Last point is great. What is history, if not a long and inconsistent grasping of history long gone :) Only brings about more immersion to the game universe
The contradiction among sources is what make it great for me, tho. Every source has their own version of story, they make it that way so they can hide the real truth like the matter of Tribunal godhood or simply because they don't have a full knowledge about it like the disappearance of the Dwemer. Dragon age has some similar things too in its lore maybe not as much but that's understandable because it's not as big as The Elder Scrolls. So, in my opinion both of them are good in their own way.
I like DA's interesting twists with elves. A lot of fantasy universes have elves as the superior beings to humans, being the ones that typically look down and enslave others.

Oh my god this is soooo good! With Lady Insanity as writer it can only be good. Please more of it. Even though i have played all these games several times i still love your way of telling the story. You will get really far with this i think :) Keep on the good work!
I don't generally like elvish cultures in high fantasy settings because they're all the same; aloof, highbrow holier-than-thous with vast magical powers, better swordsmanship and archery than every other race ever, ungodly perfect hair and clothing, etc. They look down their perfect aquiline noses, either explicitly or implicitly, at the lesser races who don't live as one with nature, or the Light, or whatever. They remind me of snobby priests. The Dragon Age elves, on the other hand, are a great analogy for racial stereotyping across all its branches. Some vocations, like the mages of the Circle Tower, seem more than all right with having elves alongside them; being a brother mage is more important than being an elf. They're treated like equals, and elves aren't assumed to be any better at magic than any other race. Everywhere else, they're treated like dirt. I've only rarely had a more powerful reaction to a video game than I did when playing my female City Elf's origin. Killing that Arl's son at the end (and taking his clothes, because they were gaudy but looked wonderful on my character) was immensely, absolutely cathartic, and an experience I treasure to this day.
The female city elf origin completely baffled me. I've always played games where the elves were OP like you say. I loved the origin - it was raw and drew me in to how elves were in the world. Was a hell of an experience the first time I played through.
Ashe | Lady Insanity You and Curt Clark may be interested in the Witcher games as well then, in it the elves have a somewhat similar role as the ones in Dragon Age (albeit more impactful in my opinion). I feel it does a better job of portraying the struggles between various races and political entities though, since the elven rebels can be shown as both heroes who fight for freedom and terrorists who commit the same crimes that they accuse humans of.

This is awesome! Thank you so much for this great chanel, fueling my passion before I start the newest game of the series. It's also incredibly well made and enjoyable!
Shoddy cast all i have to say is thank you. I honestly mean it. You guys out there have gave me a window into the games I love the most and expanded my mind beyond that. I really hope you guys keep going and I wish you only the best. I mean seriously you guys care about the story in a game and you endeavor to keep it going. May have to update this video with all the juicy new elven lore introduced in Inquisition :D such as tevinter having nothing to do with the fall of Arlathan and also the fact the ancient elves enslaved their own people and branded with the facial tattoos the Dalish now have (without knowing their true purpose)
The fact that events even can be narrated like this shows just how much railroading DA has. It's telling you what the character has happen to him, not what you, they player, can make happen. It's the difference between hitting a punching bag and being hit like a punching bag. The only time Skyrim has anything close to "but this must happen to you" is in the Thieves Guild questline, in a ruin. It sticks out like a sore thumb. Very different from the rest of the game by a wide margin. I suppose the scene with you visiting Miraak for the first time sorta counts like this too, but you can always choose to enter that book again.
Thanks for the video! I want to thank Shoddycast and Ashe for putting this series together. I think this is a great primer for people who want to get an idea of Dragon Age lore. I will be directing anyone I know who might be interested in the Dragon Age Inquisition to check these video series..
What amazes me about this part of the lore is this is the story we all believed was the truth for the elves. Only for Solas to shatter that truth having literally caused it. Pretty wonderful to see the differences between the stories and what actually happened.
I feel for the elves, all elves of Thedas. City elves; ignorant, forgetful, appeasing, second-class citizenship, treated no better than casteless dwarves and poor humans. Dalish elves; passive-aggressive to others, talented in magic, hopeful yet pessimistic at the same time, powerful yet lost in the woods, clinging to the past while not even trying to help others change the entire race's future. Among the elves we meet in-game are Zevran Arainai of Antiva, Merrell and her Ferelden-based clan led by Marethari who move outside of Kirkwall, Zathrian and his Dalish clan in the Brecilian Forest, Fenris of Tevinter, Sera of Orlais, Solas the rift mage, Tallis of the Qunari, and many more.
Leave it to the chantry to fuck up something that was going good. Mages, Qunari, Elves, Dwarves, why the hell do these zealots always manage to cause trouble for so many people?
I know you guys already have trouble doing all the other series, but please, do a mass effect lore series!! Nobody else on TH-cam is even close to being competent enough to do anything shoddycast does! Especially mass effect!
Reasons the first mage I played was an elf who did pretty horrific things in particular to humans. Elves are my favorite fantasy race, so seeing them under the boot of humanity was pretty horrific to see. Here's hoping the elves will band together again and wipe out the human scourge. >:)
Keep it up, this lore series is freakin awesome im 16 and I watch it.RPG games are the best out in my generation and being able to actually understand the world in them like its real is amazing. So yeah lovin the new dragon age series and i found it crazy your average viewers are like 29 ill be sure to tell my nerdiest friends about this ha ha
That would be difficult. Cause with the game lore, you would also have to look at the book lore and complete the whole lore series with information from books and games. But other than that, i think that's a great idea
Richard Jordan Yeah, but they're not really doing such a good job of it. A lot in the first videos was either wrong or a half truth, so you won't really do yourself a big favor if you listen to what they say, at least not if you take it at face value. If the lore of the Witcher world interests you, I'd suggest browsing though some wiki entries, they are mostly very well done.
New DA fan who's interested in playing as an elf here. I have a question. Can a City Elf character became fascinated by his or her people's lost history and culture and start embracing it like a dalish? Or is that route only available if you're a dalish?
Hi. New to the universe of Dragon Age and I thought I'd learn about lore before getting into the game. Unfortunately I am on console and my first Dragon Age game will be Inquisition, the others aren't available on PS4. This video heavily influenced my character choice to be an Elf and I'm glad. After watching this video, I'm completely disgusted by humans and wouldn't wanna play as one. I also made my Elven a mage too as I also felt disgusted on how they are treated. I purposely made a Elven mage because I heard your race and class influence how people perceive you and I want that. These videos have really gotten me emotionally invested and ready to play the game. Just finished making my character and she is ready to embrace this harsh world. I already did my Dragon's Keep and I'm ready to make some stupid decisions out of anger of my mistreatment.
I am enjoying this so far, and really looking forward to the next episode. Although i just noticed that there isn't an episode over the Qunari. Will they be left out or grazed over? This episode has made me reconsider being a Qunari but i would have to know for sure who the Qunari was.
i just found yr channel looking up Andrasteis true class and i have to say these videos are really well done.i suspect yr real life job is in the media field.
A bit brief. I feel some important details were missed, like why the Exalted March happened and the fact that most elves in Tevinter are in fact still slaves. However, I believe this series will improve as it goes on.
The exalted march of the dales happened centuries later after the land was given to them. Not years later. It happened after either the second or third blight because the elves of the dales did nothing to help a city in Orlais that was being attacked by the darkspawn. They just watched as it happened. That is what started the tension and spiraled downhill from there
The Inquisition chapter. I got some fire for that one. I wish I could have given the justice I wanted for the magic chapter, but it's so hard to talk about magic when every nation has such a different view on it.
i whole heartedly support this and am aware of how much time effort and work must be put in to achieve this, but to be completly honest, 10 chapters seam a little bit limiting for the amount of things in Dragon Age. Also you forgot to have Quinari in the list, or are you going to cover that in the Nations chapter?
I wish there were more good games with great lore, I feel like there isn't enough cool, different, and unique lore in video games. And heck, Dragon Age Origins looked real generic at first, but the Quinari, the weird church girl, and The Dwarven government, really helped me stick in there to enjoy some of the more unique aspects of the series. That said I only played origins, because I much prefered the origin stories, and intro sequences to most of the rest of the game. I played all the origin stories but only finished the full story 2 or 3 times.
GOD YES!!!! Also why didnt you bring up how alistar appoints an elf to his court as an advisor? Im pretty sure that happened in all endings cant remember the elfs name though it was our city elf characters father.
I loved the video, but hope they would do more, because Dragon Age lore is so vast that it0s impossible to explain even the most basic things in 6 minutes. Lady Insanity did an amazing job with the time she had though
Andrey Baldove Okay! Spoilers Then fen'harel (aka Solus) sent the elven 'gods' into the fade and created the veil in order to free the ancient elven people from said 'gods'. According to Fen'Harel, the elven gods were basically just really powerful mages that decided to use their powers to oppress the lesser peoples. The dalish tattoo is a recreation of the slave markings from the gods themselves. So basically even if they had contact with their gods, I'm not sure they'd be apt to help them.. With exception to Fen'Harel or maybe Mythal..
Andrey Baldove No.. Mythal was definitely a mage. There is a theory that the gods were 'spirits' but it is based around VERY loose translations to coles extremely ambiguous statements. Actual lore states she was a mortal mage. Mythal was one of the Evanuris, mortal mages who enslaved their kin and branded them with their vallaslin.[8] Unlike the other pretender gods, she was a voice of reason and genuinely cared for her people.[9] dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Mythal
Ashe | Lady Insanity too bad, the qunari are the coolest! there culture is a complete opposite to human culture. they dont even use names, they are what they do. its so dumb that people even use the name "kossit"

The exalted march of the dales happened centuries later after the land was given to them. Not years later. It happened after either the second or third blight because the elves of the dales did nothing to help a city in Orlais that was being attacked by the darkspawn. They just watched as it happened. That is what started the tension and spiraled downhill from there
are you gonna update this with the new DLC out
Do one about Fen'harel aka the destruction of the elves.
Keep em coming!
From what I read in the novel The Masked Empire, the old elven empire was little better than the Tevinter Imperium.
In my head canon for Inquisition, the chosen was an elf. Pretty funny that the race that the humans hate on so much would be a savior
Great new series!
There should be another Dragon Age game that takes place all the way back to when the Elves still had their kingdom.
Will you not be doing a chapter on the qunari then?
Congratulations for the work. It is very very very good.
Muitos parabéns
What i wouldn't give to see this show on tv. DA lore is really movie/series worthy.
Is there not an episode on templars?
Sweeeeet! Sign me up for every episode!
Ashe | Lady Insanity Which part are you most looking forward to writing? I know I'm most looking forward to Chapter 4
The Inquisition chapter. I got some fire for that one. I wish I could have given the justice I wanted for the magic chapter, but it's so hard to talk about magic when every nation has such a different view on it.
I can definitely see that. Excellent work so far
Ashe | Lady Insanity Really good. Glad you're with Shoddy Cast.
I was wondering if there would be an episode dedicated to the Qunari.
I'm most looking forward to magic!
i whole heartedly support this and am aware of how much time effort and work must be put in to achieve this, but to be completly honest, 10 chapters seam a little bit limiting for the amount of things in Dragon Age. Also you forgot to have Quinari in the list, or are you going to cover that in the Nations chapter?
Can this be updated after the new dai lore?
ben fuller Yes please!
Thanks for that vid', a perfect introduction to the universe
what is the background music?
love this series! more please :)
I donno but I'm all shook up because of this rockin' good video, baby.
....
Oh Elves,not Elvis ,sorry lols.
GOD YES!!!! Also why didnt you bring up how alistar appoints an elf to his court as an advisor? Im pretty sure that happened in all endings cant remember the elfs name though it was our city elf characters father.
Entertaining and informative video. Thank You.
Oh and my favourite elf in the dragon age trilogy so far was the rogue follower from antiva in origins such a badass cant remember his name though
Zevran Arainai
Awesome! But what no qunari?
In Chapter 6 they'll talk about religions and beliefs I think.
Starting whit Elves first.
The Qun is like Diego said more of a religion then a race. The qunari meaning the people of the qun, a Qunari ould be human as well.
Anaan Esaam Qun!
They'll pop up in the religion section!
Could you please tell a story of Varric Tethras and his clan.
How do you get that awesome armor for Merril?
complete her romance line
Amazing!
I loved the video, but hope they would do more, because Dragon Age lore is so vast that it0s impossible to explain even the most basic things in 6 minutes. Lady Insanity did an amazing job with the time she had though
I was a little dissapointed, where were their Gods?? they were with contact with the Gods, closely infact..
+Andrey Baldove Play Inquisition if you haven't already. I don't want to spoil anything but the end of the game is heavy in new elven lore.
Gary Sanders I already played it.. BTW Thanks, I didn't know you did not want to spoil. Can you make videos that's for people who played the game?
Andrey Baldove Okay! Spoilers Then
fen'harel (aka Solus) sent the elven 'gods' into the fade and created the veil in order to free the ancient elven people from said 'gods'.
Gary Sanders But Mythal was a spirit, she isn't a mage...
Andrey Baldove No.. Mythal was definitely a mage. There is a theory that the gods were 'spirits' but it is based around VERY loose translations to coles extremely ambiguous statements. Actual lore states she was a mortal mage.
Mythal was one of the Evanuris, mortal mages who enslaved their kin and branded them with their vallaslin.[8] Unlike the other pretender gods, she was a voice of reason and genuinely cared for her people.[9]

Sadly there is too little information to be had to make an entire episode focused on the Qunari
Not at all. I could write a full episode on Qunari, but sadly not a chapter for this series due to time constraints.
Ashe | Lady Insanity too bad, the qunari are the coolest! there culture is a complete opposite to human culture. they dont even use names, they are what they do. its so dumb that people even use the name "kossit"
You learn quite alot about them in Dragon Age 2, it's just a matter of piecing it together.
damn fucking Elves
outstanding!
Nice series
If their was ever a Place for the Thalmor. this is it.
I would love to see a Qunari chapter
The part of Elves and Tevinter is wrong. At least from what I remember.
