- On August 2, the Philippines and Japan conducted their first joint military exercises in the South China Sea amid escalating tensions with China. The drills, involving the Japanese destroyer JS Sazanami and the Philippine frigate BRP Jose Rizal, included tactical maneuvers and communication exercises. This follows similar drills between the Philippines and the US on July 31. Additionally, a Vietnamese coast guard vessel is heading to the Philippines for its first joint training, focusing on search and rescue and maritime law enforcement. These actions reflect heightened regional cooperation and ongoing disputes over South China Sea claims.

Back in the 80s and 90s there were no issues in that part of the world Different countries fish and enjoy the god given resources of the sea until China changes everything they occupied and militarized the area and prevented fishermen catch fish.
There were issues but mostly minor like villagers conflict until China wants to invade the whole islands.
They are also confiscating fishermans seafood harvest for their self. They are not ashamed of robbing even the fisherman. Shameful.

When Spain sold Philippines to the US for $20M. None of the islands were listed in any legal document. When Philippines filed independence with UN, none of these islands were listed in Philippines legal documents.
In contrast, after Japan surrendered at WWII, UN and UN Security agreed to returned all these islands to China. It is in the UN record.

UNCLOS official court is ICJ or ITLOS, part of UN. PCA is a commercial institution, not part of UN but rent the same building with ICJ at Hague. So it is a clever play. Arbitrary process aside, it needs both parties to agree to refer to 3rd party as arbitral to judge their case. China disagreed, did not participate, and did not pay the cost. All cost paid by Philippines to create this drama.

I would go and check the British national archives to see whether there was any material on this. I thought it would be at least marginally of interest and something to do. To my surprise, I found that there was a substantial dossier dealing directly with the question of the ownership of the Nansha Islands, of which the Philippines calls Spratly Islands. Equally to my surprise, it said that the Nansha Islands were by default Chinese.
What a load of BS. I tried searching for it and the only time it was only mentioned for a bristish archive that nansha island belongs to the chinese is on a CCP government funded website. After that there's no mentioned the name of the Archive, nor it was confirmed by the british governemnt that there is an archive in regards about this. If it's true that the Chinese did live there, and it belonged to them. Why isn't there any archelogical evidence that they lived there where are the Chinese in Nansha island right now?
