  • I have gotten a lot of requests to do a video explaining things a person can expect when they go to a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. After filming I realized there was probably a whole other video I could do on this exact topic. Hope this is helpful to those who were wondering. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
    To be clear, I am not promoting NA in this video. All I am doing is sharing my experience so that people who may be thinking of going have some idea as to what they can expect.

    I’ll be attending my first NA meeting today, and I appreciate this video. Thank you for this, it’s pretty terrifying trying to prepare for the first step especially with all of the memes and overall negative feedback about the program that’s all over the internet. It’s refreshing to see some open honesty about what to expect. Thank you.

    Hi Jexi.
    I enjoyed your video on meetings. I’m considering going to a meeting. I’ve had issues with various addictions since I was a teenager. Booze was my first, but after a DWI 5 years ago I gave up alcohol. I’ve been a casual user of marijuana for years but don’t feel a need or desire to use it anymore. My issue is with opioids. After back surgery 15 years ago I was prescribed hydrocodone and got addicted to it. After a bit of a struggle I got off them. Unfortunately 3 years ago I got into motorcycle accident. I broke my tibia bone off from my knee cap. I required surgery and needed to be on high doses opioids for a couple of months after that and was addicted again. This time around I’ve had a tougher time with getting off them. I eventually started using Kratom to help get off the Hydros but now I’m addicted to Kratom which is a “mild” opioid. If you use it long enough you can become addicted......and I am. I’m ok during the day but in the evenings I crave it and just can’t seem to go more than a day or two without out it. Two, it raises my BP dangerously high. That’s why I thought of trying meetings. Someone to talk to. When I have too much time on my hands I think about using.
    Sorry for going on too much. Your videos on addiction and going to meetings are helping. Keep doing what you’re doing. Take care Bob

      Hey Bob! I am so glad you are finding my videos helpful. First off let me tell you that you are not alone. Opioids were the absolute worst. I struggled on and off with other substances throughout my life but opioids really brought me to my knees. I think meetings are a great idea! Try a few to find one you really like. They arent all exactly the same so don't give up if you don't feel like you click with the first one you try. I still go to meetings because even after 7 years clean I still find them helpful. Thanks again for commenting and please keep me posted as to your progress. I also have a Discord server which is a chat forum if you'd like to join. Link is in description of my more recent videos. Feel free to reach out anytime! You can send me a dm on Twitter as well. I will respond regardless of where you message me so don't worry. Hi Jexi! I was once one of those addicts who thought that NA was just AA for drugs, even after a number of meetings in both programs. It's a widespread misconception, and it doesn't help that some folks in AA seem to propagate it. "Oh, we don't talk about pain pills here, you need to go to NA..." I find that frustrating for a number of reasons I won't get into... I do wish there was more clarity on the subject. And your videos are a great start to dispelling that misconception!

    15 days clean... and struggling, so researching NA and I found this video. Thank you. You mentioned etiquette... I know someone in the area that has connections to NA, but I'm not sure if they know i know... ummm... how wrong would it be for me to go to this person and ask for information, or like, basically for them to be my "buddy" so walking in isn't so scary? Does that make sense?

    • @AccordingtoJexi
      @AccordingtoJexi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Lizz! Thanks so much for reaching out. Congratulations on 15 days clean!! That is amazing! I know how hard each day is at the beginning so you should be super proud of yourself. If you know someone connected to NA you absolutely go up to them and ask for help. Any NA member may keep their status as a member secretive up until the point they are speaking to someone who is struggling. Just about every person I have met in NA becomes super eager to help anyone struggling who asks. If you have to go alone, go early. Simply walk in before the meeting starts and say "I'm new, what do I do". Someone will come and help you feel welcome and comfortable. And if they dont you find another meeting in your area. Most meetings are great but if your first experience is not what you were hoping for go to a 2nd meeting meeting. I absolutely HATED the first meeting I went to but am so glad I went back to a second one. Feel free to reach out anytime! In the description box of my newer videos you'll find my Discord link. Overdosed a few days ago and got out of the hospital yesterday. I had always struggled with easy to access drugs for me like OTC shit and xanax, then got back into weed and it wasn't enough and made me want to go further I guess until I got into Roxy 30s. Only for a couple weeks I was into it and it did such a horrible number on my soul body mind and finances, I was living to die. I hope you made it to a meeting! The first step to recovery is admitting we actually have a problem with drugs. Which it seems you've admitted so that's in itself is a huge step in the right direction. If I can make a few suggestions...don't use. ask for a temporary sponsor at any and all meetings until you find one.try for 90 meetings in 90 days( which with zoom is easy as pie). And lastly share at meetings. New comers are the most important people at any meeting because we can only keep what we have by giving it away!! Best of luck and if you're free tomorrow (Friday) at 7pm EST you are more than welcome to join us at my home group which is Twelve Group in Quincy Ma. Since Covid this may be less of an issue. Many people are more hesitant to hug strangers for a variety of reasons. I've even seen shirts with slogans that say the wearer doesn't hug. Another option is going to online meetings. Please let me know if there are any other suggestions I can provide

    Wanna hear a good one? I went back to NA recently all puffed up because I had 20 years clean. Then I heard them remind me that "alcohol is a drug"!! I had to cut my clean time in half and get a new chip!! LOL How is that for a humbling experience?

    really hesitant to go never been to an NA meeting cause i just feel like its silly like a group of ppl getting together just to talk about drugs which their trying to change their life and get drugs out of their lives just feels silly like either get sober and STAY sober or dont. dont sit around and dwell in the past. ive been sober for a few years now and never went after my rehab group meetings rhey were just so silly to me ppl telling stories and it all being negative like focus on your future your goals your accomplishments thats all

    • @AccordingtoJexi
      @AccordingtoJexi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly what NA is. NA is people talking about how they deal with life on life's terms without using. They talk about how life is positive today. Although sometimes you'll see meetings with people who are newly off drugs talking about drugs, that's pretty rare. It's more like "im going through this hard thing and this is how I'm getting through it without using drugs". Actual drug talk is not often heard in NA meetings at all.

      First off don't be afraid of the steps. They sound scary at first but your sponsor will take you through slowly at your own pace. Asking someone to be your sponsor can be one of the most nerve racking things in NA. However, most people are honored and humbled when someone asks them to be their sponsor. Even if a person isn't able to say yes, they will still be so happy you asked them. Find someone you feel you can relate to and trust and ask them. Please let me know how it goes!! ☺💜

      For me, the declaring myself as 'addict' is a constant reminder but more than that it's me showing unity with others in the meeting, identifying that I have a right to be there, to speak whatever is going on for me without judgement. I say it with pride because I'm in recovery not active addiction. I've tried the ex-addict route, trying to 'deny' my past & oh boy, did it bite me on the arse? For me, it's always there, I just do the work to keep it at bay

Once a homeless guy tried to get an old using buddy of his to leave the meeting to get drugs with him and we chased him off. @@AccordingtoJexi I started going to AA because of my aunt. Then my dad, then my sister. I went to get insight about this...condition...I wanted to learn things that weren't talked about in the books and literature. I found something in group that was never there in any psychologist meeting. People really do care about each other and bond quickly over traumatic situations. I'm not a hugger but after awhile didnt seem to mind it much. I had a connection with these people above and beyond what I thought possible. The really became my family outside of family, of that makes any sense. I could talk about all of the hurt and betrayal and survivors guilt - which is a thing even when I love someone with a drinking or drug problem. Part of me felt responsible for them wanting to escape so much. Maybe I wasnt good enough to keep them safe. I didnt love them well enough to be a reason not to do it. Maybe I disappointing them somehow and caused this...even If it's just a little bit. I felt powerless and hopeless and couldn't for the life of me figure out how I could help. I had to realize it had nothing to do with me
      I couldn't save them. They needed to want to be sober for themselves and it wasn't my fault If I decided to just walk away. That hurt the worst. Thinking it was my fault. If I stopped letting them verbally and physically abuse me. Steal all my grandmothers jewelry and pawn it for one more drink, drug.

      @@gods_cocaine7985 Many groups that meet solely online have come up with a some type of system for "signing" a paper. Even if you went to a meeting in person, you'd bring in a paper to be signed and whatever random member has the job to sign the paper will sign the paper. When I chaired an online meeting during Covid, I'd "sign" the paper by sending an email that said "This person attending the NA meeting online at this date" to whatever email they asked. I'm sure there are lots of different ways groups do it now a days. I'll be honest with you, the papers do not matter nearly as much as attending. Judges in drug court have a lot of experience and I am certain they will be able to know if you attended by asking you some general questions regardless of how many signatures you have. When you attend regularly, your language tends to change a bit

I dont subscribe to woke. I don't think listening to people moan for an hour or cry...because in 3 days its the 20th anniversary of someones death is productive. I don't believe that having ADHD etc is a burden a reason to not get on in life...i have it...lifes been crazy and fun and productive. Not victimised and miserable. My mum was horrifically abusive. An alcoholic prostitute. I was crammed in with women just like her. Not good. And N.A. does accept people at their worst...but i found being positive, humerous, pro active outside of the programme was not welcome. It seemed geared towards only the negative.

I learned how to have fun out in the real world without drugs by spending time with people I met in NA. For me, it was a really helpful positive experience that I would recommend to others.
      That said, I can appreciate that not everyone has the same experience. I have been to terrible meetings. I've seen people be vicious and I've also been let down. I can understand how someone would be turned off to NA if the only experiences they had were negative.
