Thank you. This is something I've been hoping to learn more about. For anyone using Logic 10.5.1 if your step editor is greyed out because of the step sequencer update, you can still access the step editor by going to the main menu and selecting Window and then Open Step Editor. It only works on MIDI regions and not drum pattern regions but you can convert pattern regions to MIDI. I might even be able to use the feature to fix my Guitar Pro 7 exported MIDI drum assignments or at least label them so that I can move the drum hits to the correct note for Logic MIDI drums.
@@mistergrooveman1018 double click the region and go to convert and then convert to midi. It should work as above once you have a midi region instead of a step sequencer (pattern) region.
Sir, you are indeed a genius, i've spent the best part of a week trying to find how to send MSB and LSB commands to my Proteus 2000. Your video was the only one i could find that explained how to do it within the step editor. Many thanks,
Once again, Mike, you’ve saved my day. I had recorded a beautiful passage using Arkhis, but got the layer-timing wrong. Could NOT figure out how to automate layering in post, especially given that LAYERS is one of the automatable parameters showing up in logic (useless). But by opening the piano role, opening automation, and selecting Modulation, I regained full control. Makes sense, given that in Arkhis (which I’ve learned to admire greatly), layers are controlled on the fly by the MOD(ulation) wheel. Mike, you will always be my Logic Pro Go-To Guy.

Love the tutorial, Mike. But what are doing now that they have replaced the step editor with the step sequencer in the Piano Roll? I can open the window, but I don't know exactly where to put it now. I wish we had a choice or another tab or something. This sucks. What was your fix? Thanks again!
Love it, good stuff. I've always found the region based lanes fiddly. I think I gave up on step editing as I tried it when they first introduced it. It seems a lot more refined now though.
Enjoy your videos but do you have a video on how to set up midi cc automation? for example i can write automation for dynamics and expression but they are not automatically controlling dynamics/expression within the plugin I'm using
I notice, for example, that @2:33 you have 3 alternate tool selectors available. How do I get this functionality? To the video, truly great insight and advice. A great functionality within an already powerful piece of software. Well done!

I know in newer versions of Logic, I have to open the step editor from the menu bar at the top. The issue I'm facing now (10.7) is that when changing the automation value, there are only numbers. The default is 7 (volume), for example. But when I open the drop-down, there are only numbers and no way to know which number corresponds to which value. Any ideas on this?
In Protools these lanes are available for each track in both the main arranging window and in the midi edit windows, with the notes and velocities shown also. In Logic here, are the notes not visible above the lanes of automation?

A simple question: what's the difference between automation and cc automation? They seem to me one and the same thing! I just used to say automation. Are they the same? If not, when do you use each? Thank you!
Hi Omar, CC automation is IF you use a controller assigned to a CC number, for instance your mod wheel to control expression or modulation. If you don't use a controller but you use the mouse to draw the automation it would only be called automation. But both are automation, so it's not wrong to call it automation if you used a controller assigned to the CC number, but since it's a smoother way to do it it's not exactly the same sonic result and a different technique.
Id like to add filter control but cc 74 doesn't change the filter in logic VI's such as retro synth. In the piano roll it appears as cutoff under a sub menu with the VI name ite Retrosynth which you can edit in the piano roll cc lane but . that cc is not assignabke in te step editor. Any Ideas?
How do you link Step Editor automation to controll the instrument parameters? I tried everything but it didnt work. Am I missing something or is something wrong with Logic pro x 10.4.5? thanks
@@mikaelbaggstrom thank you Mike for your answer. I did the same. Let say. I created line set for expression. CC11. I fallow all your steps but after writing automation in step sequencer, nothing happen on au intrument expression parameter. Am I missing something? Thank you in advance.

Hi Mikael.. Your trick at 2:45 (show all automations in one view), does not seem to be available in 10.5. I cannot find the step editor tab anymore. Was there another way to reach the same view?
Step Editor doesn't work like this anymore ;( It's not a tab we can click on anymore. I have another question though. Logic doesn't seem to use any "logic" in determining what lane of CC in the piano roll is displayed by default. I want the CC2 lane to always appear first when when showing automation in the piano roll. It seems to randomly choose what to show first whether it be dynamics, sustain, CC11, etc. I'm tire of having to CMD Y to find what I'm look for. Do you know how to make it show a default lane of DATA? That would be AWESOME!
Step Editor is not a tab anymore, it's in the "windows" menu. And good question, I have not seen a way to make a default automation lane when opening the piano roll. If I find a way I will share it! :)

I hope this comments section is still active... What I want to do is take the MIDI Draw data for Program Change and convert it to a plugin parameter (in this case it is the ES1 Filter Cutoff). Is this possible? I think it's not.
Mike, when I try to do this, I don't get a nice smooth curve like yours, I get lots of drop outs in the Step Editor, even though in the piano roll automation, I can see (and hear) that the CC was correctly recorded, with no dropouts. The step editor shows drop outs when there is no change in the CC value, whereas piano roll shows it as continuous curve. Is there a setting I'm missing?
I have this issue too. I also have noticed that when I try to edit the step data, I get glitches with steps that will not change on the screen. This affects how my midi information controls my VI's I'm not sure how to fix this. Its absolutely frustrating.
I feel little lost as to how to activate this feature in logic 10.5 the step editor is missing and there is a step sequencer instead, this is something I can really benefit from, any help is appreciated.
